This is a big surprise...Sarah Palin is resigning as governor of Alaska. In a basketball analogy, she says she's pushing through a national front court press and is passing the ball for the team.
She doesn't want to seek reelection and, for the best of Alaska and no politics as usual, she's going to resign and turn it over to the lt. governor in a few weeks.
She says the decision has been in the works for a while. She polled her kids and she got unanimous vote to leave the governorship. She said her siblings have been upset by seeing younger brother Twig mocked by mean-spirited people.

I promise...it was her, not Tina Fey.
She went on to quote Gen. McArthur in saying "we are not retreating, but advancing in a new direction."
really>
Really...all the talking heads are trying to figure out why.
I'm surprised that she resigned, this is a shocker.
Me, too. I wonder if a big scandal is about to break...
Great article, Amanda!
She may be campaigning early to run for president. I won't vote for her anyway.
You may be right, but it's very early.
I heard and I havent been able to verify this yet.
Sarah Palin admitted to the affair that was alleged during her VP bid and is now resigning.
Now whether this means from the whole political scene or not I havent heard.
I didn't know she had an affair while she was running for VP. Interesting...
From her resignation speech, I don't think she's resigning from the whole political scene.
She flying the coop before all her unethical actions are revealed.
My NBC station said that she was leaving to gear up for the 2012 presidential race....Who knows.
I don't mean to put you on the spot, but do you think she has a good chance?
You aren't putting me on the spot at all, I don't think that she has a snowballs chance in heck. (and this comes from a diehard republican)
She tried like hell to get support from Alaskans who all said no. And also said no when she asked us for money. Alaska wont support her. We're ashamed of her. She made us look like hicks. I got 4 calls alone and I'm not republican or democrat. Tell that to your NBC station.
She's not getting the Alaskan support she needs. What will the rest of the country think when they see that?
Thank you for sharing this, Joyce. It's good to get an opinion from someone in Alaska.
Now, John King is reporting that she's interested in running for the senate. I don't know why she would resign if she's going to seek another office. Those are usually good launching pads.
It shows what her thinking is like. She is not getting much support here in Alaska
I have always trusted the NY times for verifications. It's right on the front of NYtimes.com
Thanks Nancy.
If the allegations of her having an affair are true, the Letterman's joke about her looking like a sluty flight attendant are that far off.
Oh, how I hope this ridiculous parody of a politician runs for President. And I hope she's the Republican Candidate. She'll be their George McGovern.
Gee, George McGovern was a little before my time. I do know that my brags about being the only person in the state that voted for him...and that's just a slight exaggeration.
An AFFAIR !!! OH DO TELL !!!
(what could he possibly look like ???)
(she look like)
Now THAT's funny, Peter.
And, probably accurate...
I've been watching all afternoon for details.
That sure is interesting. Thanks for keeping us up to date Amanda.
She's getting out of office now to start making the lower 48 her home. Kinda hard to stay in the national spotlight up in Alaska. She's trying to get a jump on 2012 and she needs to be down here rattling cages and shaking down big money to get ready for her campaign.
It's all perfectly calculated. Remember how long before the election that Obama began to get his face into the national spotlight?
Yeah, but you have to remember, President Obama is sane... and a good person.. it aint the same.
But what could she do to get attention without holding an office, I wonder.
I'm with Peter on this one. It would be much easier to run for president if she was sitting in an office now. I can't think of the last time someone was elected to a major office from my state that wasn't already holding office. All the candidates for governor are either serving in congress, the state legislature or as mayors of big towns.
True but you have to remember, she's already benefited from her run with McCain. She's got a fairly solid base within the Republican Party for support already. She doesn't need to hold an office at the moment. She has face time and recognition already. She resigns and keeps her face in the news, shakes hands, raises some money...etc all the while NOT neglecting her position as Governor. That's something that opponents like to bring up at election time when the person they are running against hasn't spent enough time working in their official capacity.
It's a gamble for sure but I still believe it's a calculated move.
Unfortunately, I think she is smart enough to understand that. I would prefer she was spending the time with her youngest child when he recieves his therapies for his delays.
Politicians don't think like the rest of us. There's some sort of genetic glitch in their systems that allows them to put everything behind their ambitions. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but from what I've seen, it's rare to find the politician that wouldn't sacrifice damn near anything for their goal.
I agree N.K.*. If they did we could understand them and then make some sense of them and our election choices would be either. I think the willingness to sacrifice everything is part of the problem because then when it does not work in the manner they wished, they become bitter and we like them even less.
Well bitterness and disillusionment come with the territory I think. The career politician is a different animal that's for sure. It's that difference that keeps most of us from ever running for office. You almost have to born with some sort of skill set that most of us are missing.
Thank God.
I hate politics
I'm a news junkie...so I do have an interest. And the personalities can be fascinating. And I may have to talk about it more on gather. I haven't had this many people read a post since my "Naked Barry Manilow" article. LOL
Me, too, Marianne. I hope she's doing the right thing...
It will be interesting to see what happens in th days and months to come.
Wow...I went to eat some supper and this post exploded. Thanks for the lively discussion all!
Don't look at me! I may be a registered Republican, but I've never made fun of her once here on Gather at least. Okay, so maybe a few times other places.
they will still do everything they have been doing..
I wish someone would translate her resignation statement into understandable English. Does anyone know what she was trying to say?
You think there is enough dumb people out there to make her a serious candidate for president? I know there are a lot of rich bimbos and poor white trash that like her but is that enough to get her elected?
Enough to get her elected? No. But she does have her supporters.
Great conversation Amanda, I watched her press conference. I swear the woman speaks some strange language that I just can't make sense of. I don't think we've seen the last of her.
Sue, I don't think I've ever gotten this many comments before. I may start writing about politics more often. LOL!
Interesting. I really don't know all that much about her. I'd think it would be too early to start a campaign for 2012. Maybe the stress of what her family has been under is just more than she's willing to put up with???
She just doing it to get ready to run for something else. Politicials can be so obvious.
I heard about this.
