The High Court in the Indian capital Delhi has ruled that homosexual intercourse between consenting adults is not a criminal act any more.
This ruling overturns a 148-year-old British colonial law that described a same-sex intercourse as an "unnatural offense."
The old British law stated that homosexual intercourse is a "carnal intercourse against the order of nature."
Those caught in an homosexual intercourse faced 10-year prison sentences under the law.
In this landmark ruling, the High Court stated that the old law was "discriminatory and a violation of fundamental rights."
About 80 countries around the world still outlaw homosexual sex.

And we need to know this why???????
Did anybody force you to open the article and read???
We need to know this !!! Human rights are very important (they should be to humans, anyway).
It's about time India got rid of that awful British law !!!
WTH, Karen?!?
Hey, I gloss over things I don't want to read, all the time, articles about things that may not interest me, or about which I know nothing. If I stopped to complain about every one, I'd not have time to do anything else.
I always wondered, unless someone was caught doing something in public, how these laws were supposed to be enforced?
those British~ tsk tsk for 148 years ~prudes
Governments seriously need to concentrate on issues of Human enhancement through social programs instead of worrying about who's doing who~
Everyone does everybody. They just make believe they don't.
where? can I have directions? =P
I didn't think you were being left out of the equation...
The media around the world covered this story today using the same language and without any warnings that it contains adult language... only on Gather some people think this is an inappropriate topic to talk about so they flagged it...
*laughs out loud* Those people are sheltered prudish naive idiots!!! Compared to what YOU have lived through in your lifetime? This is just "news" (good news for human rights), not something to get all wound up about. Take them out of their comfortable homes, and drop them into the middle of a war-zone for a few hours, and they'll crack under the pressure.
Gather has its share of bigots. There are a few members who seem to think that even discussing gays and lesbians is "hate speech" or inappropriate. So, they pounce on every article to establish a flag. I suppose it satisfies their sick egos, but in the end, smart people know better.
What totally freaks me about this particular situation is that the first comment made was from someone who has been so nice to me on my postings in the past, yet snapped here, at another friend of mine. It's bad enough to have people snapping at my friends, but it's even worse when my other friends are snapping at my friends. THAT HURTS!!!
This flag is silly crap.
Gay rights are not to be hushed about after the kids have gone to bed !!!
Somebody probably didn't want their kids to see that homosexuality is not a "carnal intercourse against the order of nature."
Gather has a check box for people being "over 18" If someone let their kid on here and the kid didn't check the box, it's their problem. If someone's kid is standing behind them when they're reading their mail, it's also their problem. Why should you take responsibility for their irresponsibility?
It's only not a crime in New Dehli; it still is in the rest of the country.
Obviously, there are still millions of people in the world who are not elightened at all! Denying anyone equal rights with everyone diminishes our humanity. At least New Delhi has shown that they are against discrmination. The rest of th world can't catch up fast enough.
Just for clarification, I am a straight woman married to a straight man. Neither of us wants anyone to be victimized by hatred or bigotry.
Visiting India could be much more interesting now.
Why are there "adult settings" on this post? Besides the fact that all members are adult (at least, so I was led to believe) in what way is this more an "adult" topic than any other thoughtful topic? Laws? International laws? Indian culture? What is the problem?
Every little step toward equality for all is highly significant and and needs to be revealed as Savo has done.
There is nothing flaggable here~it's tamer by far than what they present on nightly news and how they present it~
Yes, this is a human rights issue. And I'm glad to see that India is moving into the modern times, step by step.
And this is not JUST a homosexual issue, people. Men having sex with men has been a long-time practice among heterosexual men. Just look at the widely successful legion armies of Rome - they practices intercourse regularly among themselves and it was accepted as normal. Men and boy relationships were also common in Greece and throughout the ancient world, regardless of sexual orientation.
Know thine history, gentlemen. The arguments for 'don't ask, don't tell' in our own military are a total joke when you consider that the Roman armies conquered most of the known world in their time. It didn't seem to affect their strength or concentration at all.
I heard this on the BBC last night. It is hard to believe the way governments try to control people.
I see there are probably people on Gather who don't think it should be legal here, as I see that your article has been flagged by "the community" (hey, I'm a part of the community and I didn't flag it!!!), as incorrect adult settings. WHAT? All you did was report a newsletter that I heard last night on the BBC World Service, with no disclaimer, just as they did. You did not go into details as to how two people of the same sex are involved, just simply that whatever they choose to do is now legal in India.
Sex, nudity, violence, language, adults settings, other... if we are to appease the prudes out there, no news broadcast or news magazine should be sold without such a disclamer.
I hope the powers that be at Gather don't take this article's flag too seriously.
I fail to understand what motivates people to express outrage at homosexuality, lesbianism, transgenderism or anything different. Chers daughter just let the immediate world know that she'll be having a sex change operation. This is part of our world and it's as it should be. Freedom reaches different people at different times in the course of our history.
The largest motivation comes from the Holy Bible and those who interpret it literally. In actuality, Leviticus condemns practically everyone. The other motivation is intolerance and ignorance. Many people who have low self esteem need to build themselves up tear others down. "Look. I am better than they." Blacks were a major target. Now that gays are no longer silent, they are.
The human race has a long way to go before it is fully evolved.
If ever...
