I volunteer twice a year with a program called Project Home. Project Home shelters homeless families in churches that open their doors for a month at a time, when the county shelter is full. Project Home is always needed due to the increase of homelessness. Project Home brings everything that is needed for the families: Rollaway beds, linen, toiletries, toys and books, videos and food. When I signed up for a June overnight host spot, I asked Wendy if she would like to volunteer with me. She was aware that I had been volunteering for eight years. She agreed to come with me. We were hosts to five families that night. During the evening we had a conversation with a pregnant mother of three, who wasn't happy about being pregnant again as she has a 7 month old now and is no longer with the father of two of the children. She told us how her children needed summer clothes, and she had nothing for the baby on the way. Wendy was touched by her story and said she would check at home to see if she had anything to give her (she loves garage and estate sales). Well, over the weekend, Wendy was on a mission. She went to garage sales to buy clothes for the eighteen month and seven month old children, plus the baby on the way. She bought a lot of cute, very nice clothes and laundered and folded them all. Five days later Wendy and I went back to the Project Home church to give Angela a diaper bag filled with newborn clothes, two toys and a bag, plus a box full of clothes for the two youngest kids. Angela was so happy and grateful for all this, she must have said "Thank You" ten times while she looked through all of it, guessing how these outfits would look on her children. We said our goodbyes and wished her well, knowing we would never see her again. I was so proud (if that's the appropriate word) of the kindness that Wendy had shown to a complete stranger. You can make a difference in the life of another. Just think about how you can do it.

That is wonderful that you do this. It takes people like you to make America the great country it is.
Your friend Wendy seems a lot like my best friend whose name is also Wendy. Maybe people with that name also have a special generousity gene or aomething. It is a really admirable quality. Sounds like you are a pretty great person too.
Thanks for your kind remarks. I feel called to do it, and thought my friend might enjoy it as a shared experience. Yes, my Wendy is a very special person. She is generous, open and often spontaneous, very loving and considerate. I feel blessed to have her as a close friend.
It puts a whole new spin on the idea of garage sale-ing. Maybe this could be a project for others-to go to garage sales and buy baby and children's clothes and start a "newborn pantry".
Nice idea. When Wendy explained why she was buying the baby clothes, people were often very generous and discounted their prices.
I had all kinds of baby stuff I saved from my sons.
I donated mine to the Goodwill here where I live.
Everyone out there needs clothes to wear and food to eat.
You must give in life, because it warms your soul and gives you something to live for.
