I have come to the conclusion that the USPS needs to recruit Pony Express Riders again. I came to this after my struggle to get my own Mailbox where I live.
I have lived on this farm in Virginia for almost 2 years now. I was told that I could not have a mailbox, because the postal carrier does not drive down our road. So, I've been paying $60 dollars a year for a post office box, ten miles from the farm.
We live on a gravel road, it's about 2 miles long, but a road that is maintained by the State. There are 6 farms on this road. They are all owned by Millionaires and have apartments for their workers on them. That was my first Question about the USPS, Why Not come down our road? My employer said when they first started building their home that was what they were told. No mailboxes. In the past year, I notice 3 mailboxes put up on the end of the road that joins the paved one. I figure, okay, mine is going to be the 4th one.
So, I have my son in law put up a mailbox for me next to the 3 others. Then I went to the Post office to ask what my number would be. They said, No deliveries are made on your road. I said , then why is there 3 mailboxes up at the corner of the road. Oh, well, you can put a mailbox there. (?) I said, "I did". I just want a number to put on it. So, I am drawn back into their private office like it's some big secret and they don't want the other customers to hear what they were going to tell me.(?) They get the supervisor on the phone and tell her what I want. She asked to speak to me. I repeat what I have said. I live in an apartment on a farm above a stable. I just want to know what my number will be to put on the mailbox and if I am going to receive any mail. She says, I have to fill out a form and put it in the mailbox. If it is not picked up, come back to the postoffice and tell them. (?) Then to get my number I have to call the County office and ask what it will be. I said, can't I just put barn apartment along with the 911 number and street? She says, "No, they have specific numbers for every apartment on every farm." okayyyyyyy. By now, my hair is all pulled out and my head is spinning from the Sheer stupidity of this system. So, I get my form, fill it out, put it in the mailbox. I call the county, ask them what my address will be and they put me on hold for 10 minutes. A man comes on and I tell him once again, what I need. He says, just put your 911 street address on the mailbox since your employer doesn't have a mailbox, you can do that. There are no apartment numbers for your farm. (AAAA!!!!) I am screaming in my head, but also excited that I am almost there with my new address. But, have they picked up my form?
I go to put the Number on my mailbox and see,Yes, indeed the mail carrier has picked up my form, Yippee! It's a Freaking Miracle !
Just in time for the 4th of July!
I am just wondering though, What happened to, "Through Rain, Snow, Sleet, or dark of Night, the Mail will be delivered?"
:) Thanks for letting me share my hairpulling tale with the USPS~

i'm rolling on the floor, kim!!! i'm so sorry the the freaking usps is so stupid. you should ask them if they are looking for horses to see what they woyld say. they probably wouldn't get it.
i hope you get your mail!!! :)
I was already training my granddaughter on the pony here just incase, lol.
ROFL! Unbelievable! Send me your new address and I will mail you SOMETHING...LOL!
LoL! I might just do that Netty. I am anxiously awaiting my first mail now. I only have to go less than a half a mile to get to it, it's So Exciting! (what a life I have)
Just another example of red tape, red tape, red tape. Hope your mail gets to your mailbox now.
roflmbo =) That is just too funny. Atleast now you have a mail box. Yay! That is a cause for celebration.
The USPS isn' t run by the Government anymore. Maybe you should try to get it delivered to you apartment. You could put a box on the barn..
I didn't know that Larry. Thought it was still Government owned.
LoL ,at the thought of a box on the barn
The USPS has gotten worse by the year since it was privatised.
USPS is an independent agency of the United States Government, per Wikipedia and the President appoints 9 of the 11 members of the Board of Governors.
Sorry to hear of this. Our mail was going to another town away to someone who would at least send back my medical transcripts and letters from the disability people. Opened but I can understand this, since the people probably did not relies the mail was not theirs. I called the usps and of course they passed the buck, but hopefully I got it cleared up? We were getting mail which has been obviously walked on/ stepped on too..... and we order plants through the mail as well (I rhymed lol).
"USPS is an independent agency of the United States Government"
Did not know that either, the federal government is getting sneakier and sneakier hu?
Unreal it is. I had the post office box and found out if i sent off for freebies and coupons, I never received them. I never received a lot of my mail when I had this box. I'm curious to see how my delivery will be now.
Nice to see you around Mrs. R~
Cool that you straightened it out. I had a business bulk rate stamp with them and you would not believe the hassle I went through with that! Unreal. And they have those little postal stores around here that are licensed and are the USPS, but when go to one of them, you have to pay for boxes. But if you go to another Post Office, they are free.
I'm just wondering if you would be sent a package and it was bigger than your mailbox what would happen. Our mailman always brings it to the door. Would they just leave it laying by the road there? You still will have your box in town for the remainder of the year since you paid for a year. Right?
You're right, you won't get refunds and freebies at p.o. boxes. I have read some people put a street address and the P.o. box and get them.
Ihope it is all settled now:)
You're lucky. We still have to pick the mail up at the post office and the price of having a PO Box is $60 used to be $5
I feel for you Elaine. If they won't deliver it to us, you'd think they would give us free boxes. we are saving them gas. :)
Hoooray! Yay mail. :)
The USPS drives me nuts, too. Mostly just the workers in the post office, though. Ug. The hours are 10-4:30, I think. I work 8:30-7 most days. So if I need to pick up a package or mail something I don't have the postage for, it's such a pain... and, of course, they NEVER have enough people (or efficient people) working there...
i thought they were SUPPOSED to DELIVER your mail, not make you go get it
