I just returned from Iowa where I helped my daughter and son-in-law with a new baby, a five-year-old and a two-year-old. After eight days of playing, baking, cleaning, burping, feeding, diapers, scolding, wagon rides, swinging, rocking, hugging, reading books and drying tears I was ready to come home.
However, my adorable little granddaughters all sent me home with some memorable gifts.
Emma, 5, and Ruby, 2, love stickers, as all little girls do. The house rule is that stickers can only go on sticker books, their desks or themselves. With a huge book of Hello Kitty stickers they were really in need of a place to put the stickers that wouldn’t get them into trouble. I had some magazines in my suitcase, so out they came and the sticker free-for-all began. Except for a few stray stickers that Grandma discreetly peeled off the dining room table, and some that were put on Grandma, the result was grandly decorated magazines.

The night before I was to leave I did laundry, making sure my comfortable “flying clothes” were clean. An hour before leaving for the airport, I was feeding baby Payton when she spit-up. Well, it was actually more like throw-up and I managed to catch most in the burp rag – but not all. Some landed on my pants leg and a little splattered onto my blouse. Rather than change I chose to just scrub it with a damp cloth. Good enough.

As I pulled my suitcase out to the kitchen, Ruby, sitting at the kitchen counter felt the need for a hug and buried her face in my stomach, cheesy, Cheeto crumbs and all. Most of it brushed off.
Finally at the airport, after hugs and kisses all around I stood at the sidewalk to wave goodbye, when Emma started to giggle, not an unknown phenomenon with her, and said “What’s on your shoe, Grandma?”
It was a sticker. I just left it there.
Waiting to board, I pulled out my magazines to once more admire the sticker artwork when I felt a bulge in one and something lumpy in another.
Opening the magazines I found several colored pictures stuffed into one and some rather smashed fruit snacks and a juice stained page in another.
The gifts that keep on giving.

Sweet!! Little Ruby looks a lot like my 2-year-old daughter. She likes to get the yellow smiley face stickers at Walmart and put them on my nose. So I shop at Walmart with what looks like a clown nose, LOL.
That is priceless, Jodie. The things we will do for our kids and grandkids!
aww this is a sweet story.
What a touching and wonderful tribute to grandkids. I don't have any yet, but I imagine it is a wonderful feeling to share. Thanks for sharing with us and Peace
Very cute, but where are the pictures of grandma with stickers?
Grandma was busy taking all the photos...
Precious memories, Cheri. The latest addition is a cutie-pie!!!!
Oh how lovely!!!!
What sweet memories.
They are indeed. The magazines will be kept forever.
I have some of my nephews fridge art and sticker fun books. He is 32.
How cute! They're so creative aren't they?
Real cute, Cheri.
They are fun.
You know, John, they are great fun....but boy, am I glad to be home!
Are you sure that isn't a tattoo on Emma's arm? I think 3 kids would wear me out! In fact, I am a little worried about being able to handle my first grandkid who should arrive later this month.
Congratulations, Cheri (and Bruce, too). The girls are beautiful and it sounds like a great visit.
I have three also, and they've spent a great deal of time with me this summer. It's much easier when they are 6, 8, and 10 and can take themselves to the bathroom, get their own drinks, and fix their own breakfast if I want to sleep in.
Oh, Sandy, what do they fix for breakfast? Do they wash the dishes? hehe
Hey B! You will have the time of your life with that first grandbaby....and you will be such a great grandpa. Be sure and let me know when the little one arrives. And remember....grandparents don't have to follow the rules!
The second day I was back in Iowa and playing with the girls, Emma ran out to her mom and announced, "Grandma Cheri is wayyyy funner than you Mom!" Yes....revenge is so very sweet. Shannon just luaghed and said, "I'm ok with that." As if she has any choice. (smirk)
Thanks, Sandy....you know how much fun it is to be a grandmother....but tiresome too! I can handle the wagon rides and pushing the swings, coloring, and baking...it's the getting up in the night to feed and diaper that wears me out.
