The United States almost shocked the soccer world in the final of the Confederations Cup held on Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Playing in its first ever major soccer final against Brazil, the US team led 2-0 at the half time. Dempsey and Donovan scored for the US.
Brazil, however, made a fantastic comeback, scoring first goal after only 40 seconds in the second half and then two more to take the Cup. Luis Fabiano scored two and Lucio one goal for Brazil’s victory.
The final score was 3-2 for Brazil.
This is Brazil’s third Confederations Cup title.
The United States, on the other hand, failed to produce yet another upset. In the semi-finals, the US beat Spain, the current European champions, 2-0. This victory was seen as the greatest win for the United States soccer team since they beat England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup.
The Confederations Cup is contested by the winners of each of the six FIFA confederation championships around the world along with the FIFA World Cup winner and the host country.
The Confederations Cup is considered a dress-rehearsal for the FIFA Soccer World Cup, which will be held in South Africa in 2010.
