I've gotten back into watching Saturday Night Live over the past couple of years and feel they have one of the better casts they've had since the "old days." By old days, I mean one of the first seasons with the likes of John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtain, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray to name just a few.
These days I really enjoy Darrell Hammond, Jason Sudakis, Seth Meyers, and my new favorite Andy Samberg. The humor has changed with the time, but I think it's some of the best I've seen for a long, long time.
My younger son is a big SNL fan and has taught me how to find the skits I've missed online if I fall asleep in the middle of the show.
I'm not often a fan of some of their recent musical guests, but I guess that's just a testament to my middle aged taste. Still I love the humor...even when some of it is pretty raunchy, and look forward to the satire based on the most recent political and newsworthy happenings.
I'm expecting they'll butcher the South Carolina governor tonight.

Glad you enjoy it! I don't watch much tv, these days.
I was a big fan years ago. We rarely missed a show. Now I rarely watch it. I imagine the South Carolina governor will be pureed on the show. What a dumb thing he did...wandering off. Sounds like his thinking was fuzzy on that decision.
I think it'll happen, Heather but not until the new season rolls around.
I haven't watched it lately either, don't watch much TV, I try to avoid it ::(
I miss the old shows too
I definitely remember fondly the original cast and early years. A while back they played one of George Carlin's SNL shows and it was remarkable how creative it was. I don't think the new guys measure up for me -- it seems like there's more of an insider aspect to it. Once in a while they'll do something really daring like the sketch on some shady business people which was later deleted. I'd like to see more honesty like that. I am enjoying Jimmy Fallon's show -- he's a nice guy but still settling in. I guess I tend to watch the new SNL if they have a good host or musical guest(s). If you really enjoy classic Britcoms, get one of those multi-format DVD players and check out 'The Goodies.' It was a hysterical trio in the Monty Python days and not many of their episodes made it to DVD. So I'm trying to compile a collection. Enjoy your comedies and thanks for posting this!
I do like Jimmy Fallon's show. I was worried at first, as he started off a bit slow, but I really think he's "growing" into the job!
I am using the DVR to get thru Fallons show. He is likeable the same way an overly zealous puppy is....hoping he will calm down a bit with his more serious guests. He sure seems to be having a good time. LOL
I remember saying to my sister when the whole "Appalachian Trail" story came out that there was sex behind it. It's nearly as bad as the Congressman caught in the airport bathroom soliciting sex...or "just having a wide stance," as the case may be.
I like the SNL crowd now, too, but I don't think they could ever match the wonder days of Belushi, Acroyd, Radner, Curtain, etc.
You know it's funny my husband and I were just discussing this tonight. We started watching Saturday Night Live together during the first season. Do you know if they have put out DVD's of past seasons? I would love to have some of the earlier seasons.
Yes, there are several DVDs of past seasons. Check Amazon.com.
I checked and they have the first few seasons and they are a bit expensive. I may put Season 1 on my Christmas list.
Andy Kaufman doing the Mighty Mouse song.
Eddie Murphy doing parody of James Brown's "Gonna Get On the Good Foot" turned into "Gonna Get In the Hot Tub".
Eddie doing Mr. Rogers.
Steve Martin just starting out.
Martin Short being Katherine Hepburns cousin with a hotdog stand.
Bill Murray's lounge singing.
Yep, it will never add up to all that again.
I remember all of these, Sharon! I had almost forgotten about Andy Kaufman. So glad you mentioned him.
yes i am a fan as well. i remember as a three year old, staying up late to watchit in the early 80s (my mom was drunk or high, so she didnt care) and it has been awefully funny. my favorite guest is justin timberlake because he is hilarious!
it's been a very long time since I've seen SNL... used to watch it almost every week with a group of friends ...we'd go karoke or whatever and then back to Chris' to watch it
I was extremely fond of "Rosanne Rosannadanna" (Gilda Radner) in the early days. I agree with you that the newer shows are getting better. The late 1980s and the 1990s were such a turn off. The humor involved more street nonsense than the intellectual humor of the 1970s. But, the shows I've seen lately have been pretty funny and appealing to the thoughtful thinker, in my opinion. I didn't see the show last night. How was the Mark Sanford material?
I am in total agreement about the musical guests. They just don't do anything for me. I'm still a little stuck in the disco era of the 1970s and the rock and roll of the 1960s, I'm afraid. Although, I listen to Miles Davis and some of the jazz greats. SNL isn't about to appeal to my tastes.
I enjoy the latest cast also. I've been watching it since it debuted while I was in college.
I should point out that the "since I was in college" remark refers to the very first season. As a Journalism and Broadcasting major, SNL was a "must see" for most of us on Saturday nights even if we were partying.
The first time I watched it, I was tripping my brains out. I couldn't believe the stuff they were getting away with, and had to watch the next week to ensure I wasn't imagining it...lol
Spartan, I remember all of the Media majors gathering in front of the TV for the first season of SNL. It was well written.
"Jane, You Ignorant Slut!"..is one of my all time favorite lines. I like the new crew myself, particularly Andy Samberg...that boy is going places, I'll bet. But still, no one has topped the original "Not Ready for Primetime Players" yet.
They are now on sumer hiatus, so the SC gov. satire will ahve to wait for fall, I guess. I was tickled to hear that 'Weekend Update" is getting its own show in primetime.
SNL is a can't-miss-it during election years. I remember the early years too--Belushi's Samurai and Bee skits; Ackroyd's "Jane, you ignorant slut"; Roseanne Roseannadanna; and so many more.
I don't make the effort to stay up and watch on a regular basis anymore but last fall during the whole election hoo-rah, I did and probably will again.
Gilda Radner was always such a hoot. I haven't seen the show in a zillion years. Maybe I'll give it another chance.
the only time in years I watched it was when they had Caribou Barbie on.
I loved that....and Tina Fey's rendition of Sarah Palin was pretty good as well.
With the first few seasons with the old cast out on DVD, I was able to catch a little of what I missed out on, by not being "of age" at that time (same would go for other shows like "All In The Family"). It's all enough to convince me that TV probably "ain't what it used to be".
My sister and I still talk like Rosanne Rosanna Danna at times.
I loathe the current cast, with the single exception of Darrell Hammond -- I think he's a genius. I haven't liked a cast since the Dana Carvey/Mike Meyers/Jan Hooks days -- those guys, and the original Not Ready for Prime Times, spoiled me.
Old favorites: Samurai, News for the Hard of Hearing, Wild and Crazy Guys, Blues Brothers...
Once in a while I watch it, I don't go out of my way to make sure I see every episode, but I think it is fun to watch.
I did not like Sambourg that much but adore Kristin Wig, and really love Sudekis, and.....the guy who plays creepy people like...Serling...cannot think of him but started the same time as Sudekis a couple of years back and Hammond is terrific, a lot of turnover since i started rewatching in 04.
I think the creepy guys is Fred Armiston (sp?)
I remember who I was thinking of. It is Jon Hader. He plays Serling and other characters. Armiston is an incredible actor and portrays Obama, actually putting Hammond out of the Pres role for once.
Featured in the The Triple Name Club I don't watch summer reruns or any rerruns in the year, but like to catch some of the good shows.
I only recognize the Original Not Ready For Prime Time Players. I stopped watching when they moved on. I really don't think any other cast could compare. Of course this is my opinion only. And don't get me wrong, I like some of the comics that have come after.. but not on SNL.
I loved it during the last election when Tina Fey impersonated Sarah Palin. "I can see Russia from my house!" What funny stuff.
I loved it back in the day but now I am in bed way before it comes on. I like to catch it every so often. My favorite was Gilda Radner.
My least fav SNL? When Sinade O'Connor ripped a photo of John Paul II on state. This woman is a Catholic in REBELLION and needs to be brought back into the fold, kicking and screaming if need be.
My favorite SNL? Madonna a week later ripping a picture of Sinade O'Connor.
I think that "rebellion" is a little disingenuous, Kerrell. She might be a "fallen away" Catholic, but she is hardly rebellious. One has to consider what the Roman Catholic church did to the Irish to understand why the backlash. There are many Irish Roman Catholics who are quite disillusioned by their church. And, they should be. They have been victims of untold terrorism for many years. It took the British to normalize the terrorists political intentions to improve the situation. During all of those years, the Roman Catholic church looked the other way and encouraged the Irish to keep having babies. Sinead O'Connor was a child victim of these regressive attitudes of the Roman Catholic church. She is only sharing her own views on a Pope who behaved so kindly toward the world, but sat in his official position and discouraged such simple things as condoms to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. In America, we live according to common sense thinking. But, in many countries, they rely on the words of the Pope and the church to decide how to live. So, when the Pope proclaims that condoms don't work, the poor people who don't know any better believe him. Sinead O'Connor might have chosen a rather irritating way to express her ideas. But, her ideas are still right on target. The Roman Catholic church is directly responsible for unnecessary suffering in our world. Many people understand quite clearly what she is saying.
I didn't even know it was still on. I use to watch it everynight refusing to miss one episode.
I'm guessing Mark Sanford will be old news by the time they start their new season in the fall- especially since it's a live show.
The cast now is pretty good, but I really miss Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. I think the strong female players give the show more balance. And Justin Timberlake is the new SNL favorite host; I think the writing it actually better when he's hosting.
I was in high school back when the original crew was still on. My friends and I used to toke up and watch SNL then go out to party. I thought Bill Murray and Jane Curtain were the funniest.
