Last night's 2-0 victory over the European champions Spain is seen as the greatest win for the United States soccer team since they beat England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup.
At the same time, this is one of the biggest soccer upsets in years.
The US is currently playing in the Confederations Cup held in South Africa. The Cup is contested by the winners of each of the six FIFA confederation championships around the world along with the FIFA World Cup winner and the host country.
The Confederations Cup is considered a dress-rehearsal for the FIFA Soccer World Cup, which will be held in South Africa in 2010.
The victory over Spain is remarkable especially since the US team badly lost its first two games in the Confederations Cup. The US qualified for the semi-finals only after beating the African champions Egypt 3-0, and helped by the Brazilian victory over the world champions Italy also 3-0.
The American team squeezed through on the number of goals scored.
In their first ever global soccer final on June 28, the US will play either Brazil or the hosts, South Africa.
