But it appears to me that the mullah's in Iran will crush the opposition and the repercussions with the West will be minimal. It will be Tienniman Square all over again. Realistically, I am not sure how much the West can do.
Al Jazerra is reporting that as many as 1500 Iranians and as 50 journalists have been arrested and that the Iranian authorities have clearly said that they will be "dealt with in a manner that will teach them a lesson".

Hi,
I hope you're wrong as well, but I don't think you are. Sadly, I think you're right.

I wish I knew what the answer was, but it is not a situation with any good answers at this point.
This was all predicted and shouldn't surprise anyone. A government like Iran's Mulluhocracy is far more tenuous and bloody minded then its predecessor about staying in power
Bush blocked protests here by not allowing them near him and the media sucked his ass by not reporting them. If Americans knew how to protest they would be shot down real fast.
The Iran election is none of our business. The Iranian people do not need or want any help from Americans.
You can't let every Bolshevik run up and down the streets condemning the administration, burning the American flag, and demoralizing the troops overseas. I'm glad that Bush prohibited people from protesting because the vast majority of those individuals are misguided and engaged in petty partisanship. Those people can never full grasp American foreign policy or grand strategy for that matter. They opposse the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan because they are generally pacifist who opposse all forms of armed conflict. These people can not grasp the fact that war is social-political-economic phenominon of modern life that will never be abolished until there is something approaching a truely global government.
I'm sorry about having to be the pragmatic realist that I am, but both the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are perfectly legitimate military operations that despite popular belief have been successful especialy when compared with past conflicts such as the Vietnam War and the Korean War. We shouldn't forget the fact that the Vietnam War cost the United States 55,000 casualties when compared with the Iraq War, the conflict is almost bloodless. We you compare the Iraq War to battles of the Second World War it is truely amazing in spite of the fact that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld completely screwed up the plans for Cobra II (the initial invasion plans) drawn up by CENTCOM commander Gen. Franks and staff by demanding that the invasion force be slimmed down from 400,000 men to 145,000 men.
That said American war protesters are left wing ideologs who are political through back to the sixties. We as a society should demand that these people go home and enter the political mainstream. Ancedotaly if you ever talked to these people they can't tell you exactly why they don't want the U.S. military in the Middle East they can generaly only express their hatred for Bush and the attrocities of American soldiers and argue that the wars were for oil. Most of these people also believe that September 11th was a hoax. They are beholden to conspiracy theorys that are far more outlandish than many of the organizations on the far-right of the political spectrum.
As for Iran, we should have conveyed moral support to the protesters. They unlike their American counterparts do not take for granted the rights they are fighting for. We shouldn't have just sat around watched this all unfold over CNN.
"If Americans knew how to protest they would be shot down real fast."
there you go "assuming" again jack with absolutely no data to back up your assumptions.....and we all know what "assuming" does
The sad GOP flag wavers that sit on their ass and preach hypocrisy should be made to serve in the blood for oil wars they help to create.
You are not an American josh if you can support insurrection and GOP hype propaganda.
The real lesson you need to learn will be taught to you when you go to other countries that have suffered the murder of their children and innocent people and try waving your Chinese made American flag, but that would take guts wouldn't it.
John Wayne is fun entertainment on TV but in reality it doesn't work.
The only thing Americans have to fear is their political hacks and their insurrection.
lecia you just stay in your GOP induced sleep.
Were you on the docks in CA when Bush had the local police fire on our protest? Were you in London helping us pull down the Bush effigy? Were you at the Bush ranch protesting his lies and insurrection? Are you ever anywhere besides on the internet playing your attack dog scenario?
You have a lot to learn lecia when it comes to running your mouth about things you have no understanding about.
"You can't let every Bolshevik run up and down the streets condemning the administration, burning the American flag, and demoralizing the troops overseas"
of course you can and should always, that's what democracy is all about but then we all know what oh georgie thinks of democracy and our constitution
i just hope things do not get worse for the people there. they have broken diplomatic ties with britian which will make them even more isolated
Iran does not need Britain any more than they need America.
no they just need people like you who support their brutal regime
why don't YOU get some "guts" and go and live there
I have been there lecia, now its your turn to put up or shut up.
Your material is getting old lecia you need some new feeds from your party boss Limbaugh.
I am surprised at the political/ideological reaction to this post. Mainly I see the situation as just terribly sad.
Could we have some civility?
Could we have something besides GOP nonsense?
We have no right interfering in another countries election. We were thrown out of Iran with good reason and they don't need or want any of our hypocritical help. Has anyone here figured out how to run our own elections without fraud?
