I started a new group called "Did That Freebie Work" http://workingfreebies.gather.com and to kick the group off I wanted to share (and ask others to share) some of the freebies they have received. Before today it had been a while since I requested any freebies online but I had some success with the freebies I did request.
One freebie I requested was from Campbell's soup. I found the link somewhere on Gather and decided to give it a try. And it worked! Soon after requesting my free seeds I received a packet of tomato seeds in the mail courtesy of Campbell's.
They did not grow, but I do not have a green thumb!
Another recent freebie request was from The Great Sunflower Project http://www.greatsunflower.org . The catch with this one is that they ask that once your sunflowers start to grow that you monitor them for a little bit each day to see how many bees are visiting. They are trying to save the bees! I think it is a worthwhile freebie. My sunflowers came pretty quickly and they have even started growing. Sunflowers don't seem to be daunted by black thumbs.
I have even killed them a few times since I started growing these particular seeds but they keep coming back.
What freebies have you received lately? Please consider sharing your own post about the freebies you have gotten and submitting it to my new group!

I got my tomato seeds as well. Most of the seeds didn't germinate, but that couple that did are about a foot tall now. Can't wait for fresh tomatoes!
Oh yum! I'm jealous. I wish one of them would grow. Do you have any tips on how I can help them grow? Should I keep the soil wet all the time or let it start to dry then give them lots of water? How much sun should they have?
When first planted they need lots of water, about 1" a week. And toss some crushed eggshells on em. Plant them in furrows (little hills) if you can. And they need full sun but cool nights.
Fantastic advice! Now, if I can just be consistent with watering them. I need a routine. I'm so bad with routines. The eggshells I can do. I actually started my own composte bucket but I was scared to stir it up and it smelled a good bit. I didn't use any meat or dairy so it wasn't a death stink, but it was still pretty rotten and gross. After avoiding it Jason finally dumped it all out on the ground. Man, that was some good stuff underneath the slimey top, but I was just too freaked out to touch it. I'm going to try again, but with smaller amounts.
I know why they haven't grown now. I have them in a low-sun area and don't water them enough. Thank you!
If you want, you can buy a timer and set it to water them every morning. You won't even have to worry about it!
Good idea! Thank you :)
I haven't gotten anything lately, but I don't pursue freebies like I used to. I seem to be spending all my free time on Gather. Go figure. :)
I go through freebie spurts. Most of the time I only do ones I'm sure will be worth my while and I only request things I'm really interested in so I'm not making dozens of requests a day (I can't blame those that do, but it will drive me insane!!). Gather takes up most of my free time too :)
I received the mater seeds, too. I don't know if they'll grow...since I have nowhere to plant them. If I put pots on my balcony and maters started sprouting, I'm sure my neighbors would help themselves and I'd be doing all the work for nothing. I think I'll give them to my best friend next year so he can grow them on his porch...way less neighbors to take them where he is.
Ohhh I'd HATE neighbors like that. Rob, we should send you a b.b. gun. Take care of those neighbors ;P I hope someone can use your tomato seeds. It's too bad you can't. You could always go the route of donating them to a group like you did with the trees. That was a fun event to read about.
That's why I'm hoping my best friend will take them and grow the plants. I'd even go to his place and care for them. I love tomatoes, but think I'll be stuck paying $2.99 a pound at the grocery store for the 'hot house' type...even though fresh, home-grown ones taste so much better.
They do when the bugs don't get them. That would be so nice if you had a spot to garden without dealing with your neighbors. You deserve some free, fresh produce darnit! I hope he takes them too. I am fortunate enough that our family grows them too and they always have a surplus that they love to share with us. When that happens we end up with too many.
I haven't received any freebies lately after my Kellogg's package, but am expecting some coupons and hopefully samples here in the next 4-6 weeks. I'll go right now and join your new group!
Thanks Diana! Please share any that you receive, or don't receive :) That Kellogg's package you received was VERY nice! I hope you get all of the others you've requested.
I've gotten some coupons for freebie items lately, but haven't tried them. I'll let you know. I'll go check out your group, too.
Please do share if you get any of them!
I got both of those freebies as well!
They are good ones! Today I started requesting some more that I was interested in, otherwise they are the only two I have requested lately- and I got both! But in the past I've requested freebies and never received anything. I always check my email too, to make sure that there is nothing I need to confirm. Quality Health is the worst offender.
It is always great to get freebies in the mail.
I love getting free stuff in the mail. It's so exciting to get something nice instead of a bill.
Wow, I am going to join your group Alex!
I got the tomato seeds, Planted them in a big pot and I have lots of little leaves some with yellow flowers but they are so small I don't think I will see tomatoes on that one.
