I was watching TV last week and saw what I can only describe as an ambulance chaser's dream.
The ad features a mass of twenty-somethings trespassing on a golf course in the darkness of night, tanking up on Smirnoff Ice (and God knows what else), then rolling out a tarp as the timed water sprinklers turn on, providing a make-shift "slip-and-slide".
Not to question the intelligence and/or common sense of the upcoming generation, but what idiot would approve this commercial, knowing that, somewhere in this great land, some other idiot is going to actually try this -- most likely with something a little more potent than Smirnoff Ice.
Let's count the few things that could go wrong here ...
- One of the morons attempting this will sustain serious injury by sliding over a stone under the tarp, sliding off the tarp and into a tree ... you get the point.
- The whole bunch of them gets arrested for trespassing.
- The turf at the golf course gets trashed by the abuse.
- As the alcohol really starts to kick in, more serious damage is done to the club.
- Finally, since these dopes need to get home, they return to their cars and drive home intoxicated.
Nice job, Smirnoff. I hope that none of this happens but, if it does, I hope that everybody affected sues the ever-loving sh*t out of you -- even if you do have one of those completely illegible "do not attempt this" messages flash across the screen.

i was thinking similar stuff about this very same commercial, except my brain wanted to know "if it's so hot that they need to do this, why then are they wearing jackets and sweat shirts when they get to the golf club?"
Because they wanted to show physically fit twenty-somethings removing their clothing -- in slow motion, of course. Just to keep the audience's attention.
I just wish that was the only commercial encouraging dangerous behavior. Have you watched the car commercials lately?
Smirnoff should be ashamed of themselves! I hope the ad gets pulled!
It does not convey anythinmg positive....it does convey a total lack of responsibility & disregard for the law!
There are very few commercials, I liked anyway. They do so much to get attention, and it's usually the same kind.
I have only stocks on now, they rarely show that "kind" of commercial. I don't like most TV, anyway and don't watch it- to promiscuous.
I have not seen that. As one who lived next to a golf course (and that was in thelate 80s and early 90s), I can tell you that people don't need much encouragement to do stupid things there. Having the police called for pranksters and tresspassers was almost a nightly event.
I haven't seen this commercial either but it does sound very irresponsible to film a commercial like this.
evolution in action... I wonder if we could get them to shoot on on a median on a L.A. freeway?
I use to live next to a golf course oh the stories I could tell!
It is a way of culling the idiotic from this planet!
I agree, Georgiana. With all the helmet laws, seatbelt laws, don't eat the lead paint laws...we have to have SOME way to keep the population of those who swim in the shallow end of the gene pool down!
The Darwin Awards take on special meaning when you think that the majority of his deriders are the ones who are culled!
Private property rights or responsibility are not principles held up by Hollywood or advertsing companies in general so why would they actually produce something in line with either?
yeah but look how much fun they had!!! isn't that all that matters? this generation has no consequences. you make that point yourself, if someone goes out and does this for real they can just blame smirnoff.
In 1934, it's been bought up by an American named Rudolph Kunnet. To this day, Smirnoff is still a 100% American company so the ads you saw came from Americans.
That says a lot about how the insanely rich view the proverbial idiots who buy their products.
And just for the record, the Russians would likely never insult the American public's intelligence like "the locals" are doing it, right now.
