Food carving is such a fasinating art form. It's one of my favorite activities while cruising. Below I have tried my best to take photos from start to finish on two cravings made out of one watermelon.
The first one is a carving of a fish:

Getting ready!

Carving the design onto the outside of the watermelon

Removing the outside to begin forming the fish design

Almost done...

Showing of his finished work of art!

The completed Watermelon Fish!
Now for the Flower Carving:

The carving begins...

The shape of the flower is begining to show

Creating the petal layers of the flower

Almost done...

Showing off the completed Flower Watermelon Carving!
Awesome work! I don't know how they do it!
Hope you enjoyed this "How To" on Food Carvings!

That is so cool, some people are so talented.
They sure are, Rae!
Very Nice
A lot a talent needed to carve fruit like that.
You said it, Elaine!
Wow, that is amazing.
Wouldn't we all like to be able to do this?!!
Aren't these amazing. I've never seen them actually doing this but have been lucky enough to see the finished product.
It was amazing how quick he was able to do them, Nana. I had hoped to get photos of the things he was going to create with the vegetables you see on the table, but had somewhere else I needed to be!
Pretty, but I like my watermellong best cut in half in front of me with a spoon in hand. -grin-
Wow, that is really cool. I would love to see them do that in person.
hahaha I make myself laugh, I thought this was going to be an article about you carving food on a cruise...and I was like...OOOOOOK if that's what she likes to do on a cruise who am I to say different....hahahahaha.....then I realized you liked to watch food carving on cruises....
LOL... too funny, Katherine! I can see that I didn't state it very clearly that I like WATCH the food carving. I'd love to be able to do it, though!
It seems a shame to eat those their so pretty. I saw a guy on the 3abn channel who carved pictures in the skin only and it looked real nice too. He also made a huge cake that look like an island with a lake It was the size of a dinning table.
Bet that was fun to watch, Vivian!
Wow, just amazing! We've been on just one cruise, many years ago, and they had fabulous carvings, as well......just so awesome to look at! Where did you go on your cruise, which cruiseline did you use? I am planning a number of surprise cruises for my hubby, son and, of course, myself in the not-too-distant future......hubby works sooo hard at his job....it's time to play for awhile!!!!! Somebody said that Carnival's not the very best.......I have no idea.....if you've got some suggestions, I'd appreciate them!
Nora, we did a trans atlantic cruise from Miami, stopping in Bermuda, Lisbon/Portugal, Vigo/Spain, Cherboug/France and finishing up in Harwich/England. My husband and I have been cruising for a number of years now, and we absolutely love Royal Caribbean Lines. We've been on Holland American, which would be our second choice. Princess is supposed to be good, too, but we've not been on one. We are not fond of the "party ships" which would be Disney, Carnival, etc. There are some great deals out there at the moment, so go for it!! If I can help in any way, send me an email.
Sue, do those cruise lines also offer tours, when they stop at the different countries? We'd love something where we could pick & choose some neat tours....really don't want to take off on our own, if you know what I mean!!!!!
neat carvings..thanks for sharing..
You are welcome, Larry!
This is very interesting. I'd love watch this myself. He is quite talented at his "art".
Thank you for posting your photo essay at Pretty Pictures.
That is just s amazing, Like carving the dimensional Halloween pumplins, bet his house is incredible in the fall. Thanks so much for sharing.
I don't know how they do it either...I would end up without limbs if I tried to carve.
Very cool
so neat! i saw this type of demo when i went on my cruise last year!
Thanks so much for all the comments, EVERYONE!
very interesting post ,Sue . Cool .
I stood and watched this being done when I was on a Carnival cruise. I don't anticipate doing this anytime soon.
Oh come on, JOHN... give it a try! I'm sure you can master it!! :-)
Interesting series of photos. So that's how they do it.
Wonderful photos, Sue!
So beautiful. If I could carve something like that I wouldn't let anyone eat it. I'm not even good at slicing pie. My husband says I just butcher things.
Wow! Excellent photo essay! I really enjoyed this
Thanks, Sassy... glad you enjoyed it!
those are amazing, could never do anything that detailed. I just love the rose.
You and me both, Angela!
Wow, that is so neat - very impressive! I have a watermelon on the counter waiting to be cut, but I don't think I'm that ambitious:)
Awww... come on, j r! You can do it!! LOL
The fish was impressive, but the rose was just gorgeous!
My family used to always take a watermelon, and make it into a basket for family get togethers. Then, the cut up watermelon, and other assorted fresh fruits would be mixed in and put in the 'basket'.
I remember making a watermelon basket years ago and filling it with other fresh fruit, too!
When I was still little, my grandma did ceremics, and cheated- she made a basket shaped like a watermelon, painted it like one, and they used that after she made it. No more carved watermelons! I should attempt one this year for the family reunion.
Go for it, Heather!
Pretty carvings.
Man, I can barely cut decent slices of a watermellon.

Thanks so much for the "feature," Kay! :-)
It's amazing, how they do that!
Very cool! They sure are talented!
Wow! I with I could do that!
Wish i could that!
