This isn't a momentous decision. I don't expect it to affect my Gather Experience™ in a negative way. Since I joined Gather back in the Paleozoic Era I've signed up for just about every group that's solicited my membership. For a long time I've noticed that groups, even the tightly focused ones, rarely provide content that has much to do with the group theme. I'll admit to having joined a bunch of post anything groups. This has enabled me to get new evidence that "anything" is a truly all-inclusive term.
I give up. I'm swearing off groups. They don't provide a way for me to look for specific topics that interest me.

Fan clubs are good.
Well, if you were interested in ferrets, my ferret group is tightly focused. Maybe you're just not interested in enough things. :)
Actually, I find a lot more content by looking at what my friends post. I rarely read via groups. The hard part for me is to weed out the stuff I'm not interested in from the good stuff ... when I have notifications on, I'm drowned. When I turn them off, I hear crickets.
Thank you for posting this to the "I'm Swearing Off Gather Groups Group".
Thank you for posting this to the "I Hate Gather Groups" group !!!
Thanks for sharing.
I'm wrestling with that idea myself, but I think I'll just whittle it down to twenty and see how that works.
I post to groups but I only go to the group pages for ones I moderate on occasion to change up the spotlighted things. I suppose some people find them useful.
I agree. Over 90% of all topical groups on Gather fail within a few weeks. In some cases, this requires only a few days. While there is some value in joining newer groups to take advantage of this dynamic, playing that game is likely more effort than it would be worth.
YES! YOUR ARE RIGHT!
I pretty much have quit joining groups. I rarely ever go to a group page and have also stopped posting to groups consistently.
Methinks you should start a Group-Hating Group, Nippy. It may surprise you how many people actually utilize it appropriately.
BTW - your Gather daughter and her beautiful baby are coming to visit me this week! If we get a chance, we'll discuss this Gather trend and report back our findings.
:-)
Hey, I beat you all to it. You can join my group hating group here.
I formed it a long time ago. It has 7 members.
Excellent idea. You need to re-think your recruitment strategy, though.
:-)
I think chocolate milk in the drinking fountains is still the most effective recruiting strategy.
Really? For me, nothing beats booze through the mail.
There's chocolate milk in the drinking fountains? Where?
Darn! I was going to start a frog group!
I did it by reflex for a long time. I wish I'd kept track of the number of trials to extinction.
I think I belong to a frog group. I'm not sure anything's been posted to it in a long time.
All of my groups are moderated with draconian guidelines except for the two post anything groups.
I wish more moderated group owners were as strict as I am. But then again Gather doesn't make it particularly easy or worth while to have a tightly moderated group in the first place.
Heather, you're right about moderated groups. I have a couple of those. One is for stuff I wrote on a particular topic. I changed the config so that people couldn't post to it. It still gets submissions. I usually let things languish in the queue in my moderated groups. Most of the submissions are family pix and email forwards. :)
I remember your emails about this. They were little works of art. In fact, you should have featured them in the appropriate groups. :)
Here's what's sitting in the queue for my Aleatoric Party group. It's devoted to a fake political party I've trotted out every 4 years since 1992. The party's perennial candidates are dead blues singers Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell.

You're too popular, Nippy. Practically no one wants to pulish off-topic stuff to my linguistics group.
Or on topic, for that matter.
:-)
I'm a little worried about redacted I's memory parasite/symbiote. It doesn't sound healthy to me. The "treasure of pleasure" sounds like something you need to pick up in a role playing video game or maybe a good old fashioned platform scroller.
Thank you for posting this to the "I wouldn't post to any group that would have me as a member" Group.
But there are so many moderated groups out there that do stay focused on the subject. I think this is the way to go for specific categories. The search method just doesn't work well here on Gather.
"Really?! Seriously?! Are You Kidding Me?!" is ALL humor. My #2 Ninja Kitteh moderates it with me and we have ONE rule: If it's going to be published in RSAYKM?!, it better be funny.
Khmm... I'm sorry. I might have tried publishing some non-humorous stuff to it...
