It would seem so. I'm not sure if it's the economy, or a general lack of interest, but I do know that I am not the only artist who feels this way. We've all been seeing a lack of sales here lately (not that I've been working that long to begin with).
I have sold pieces in 4 countries. Things were picking up for a while, but right now it seems like no matter what I do people just aren't interested. I get a lot of compliments on my work, but not many offers. Are people just not buying art?

Art is always changing. When Impressionism first came out it was called utter crap. Now it's fine art !!!
lol! I'm still trying to get minimalism, myself. a) buy a giant canvas b) paint a small red dot in the middle... voila! art!
We were just discussing this with regard to the ballet. It does seem people are cutting back on everything, including participation in the fine arts.
Its probably the economy. I think there will always be an interest in art, its just whether or not there is the extra green to spend on what you like.
Hopefully when the economy picks up interest in the arts will too. Unfortunately too many people want mindless entertainment. They don't want to be involved in anything that will make them think as well as entertain.
I have been having problems selling art since about the middle of last year. I don't really think fine art is dead, but is changing with new technology. When cameras and colored film came out, art began to change substantially. Now, we have computers and digital art. That doesn't mean that hand-made art is dead, but it will change into something different.
hope things turn around for you and everyone else.
It seems to me your sales are just following the bad economy . Art is still appreciated ,but one of the first items to go in a pinch.
It's sad, but you're right. Good taste and art appreciation are the first things to go when an economy is struggling.
its the ecomony, it needs some kind of energy thats not happening at the moment
even Van Gough would have a hard time selling today
I don't know anything about fine art...Your things look great.
I sell simple crafts but haven't sold a thing in 2 months.
Wash your mouth out girl, fine art is certainly not dead. It is just the economy. That knowledge doesn't help pay the bills, but it helps me realize that it isn't me. I have had to actually start maketing a bit with my painting, where as before I was doing fine with word of mouth.
The killer for me has been that a few of the local galleries have closed, so the ones that are left are playing hardball. They want a higher percentage and give you less space.
I do other things, so I can ride this out. I hope that you have that luxury too:)
I saw your page, you paint good :)
the canon survives. i find this same trend in 'literature'. in the forties in the u.s., the taxi cab drivers were quoting homer and shakespeare for entertaiinment. now there are philosophy books written centered around the simpsons. decay, decay, i say!
