A friend of mine here, told me that there has been some talk on Gather about whether or not we were asked for permission to be mentioned in the latest Gather press release, http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20090617005728&newsLang=en.
Another question was about making our Gather earnings public and why we would want other people to know that kind of information.
A couple of weeks ago, I got a Gather message from Lisa W. Gather was looking for members to be "spokesman" in their upcoming press release. I know of atleast 4 other Gather members that were asked to participate, but don't know whether or not they did. I know one of them didn't get their quote back in time, LOL!
YES, 100% YES! I was asked for permission. They asked me to send them a quote that explained what I like about Gather points and what they have done for me! I sent them a quote, something that didn't bother me at all! I got a reply back with an "edited" quote. A little of my quote was taken out and they had added a little extra info that I hadn't originally included. I was asked if the edited quote was okay with me and I agreed!
The comment I sent to Gather:
Gather points have helped me buy the extra things that my kids have asked for without having to break the bank! I enjoy Gather and the points because they give me a little extra to spend on my family! I used my earnings from Gather points to entirely fund our 2008 Summer Vacation to the Oregon Coast where I also got to meet fellow Gather member Faith B!
Gather has been a wonderful addition to my family!
Bridget A.
The edited comment that Gather sent back and asked if they could use:
"Gather Points have helped me buy the extra things that my kids have asked for without having to break the bank!" said Bridget A., a Gather Member who has earned $2,460 since joining the site in 2007. (http://cheekymommaof2.gather.com/) "I used my earnings from Gather Points to entirely fund our 2008 summer vacation to the Oregon Coast, where I also got to meet a fellow Gather member."
About Gather including my earnings in the press release, I have no problems with that at all! I post my monthly earning articles on Gather anyway, so if people really cared and wanted to take the time to add it all up, that information is already here! Now, if people were asking how much my husband made on a yearly basis - that's nobody's business! But, Gather earnings are totally different, in my opinion!
Personally, I enjoy reading all the Gather earning articles that members post. I enjoy seeing what people earn and win here, I think it's wonderful!
I think that by including our earnings in the Gather press release, it shows current and future members what you can do on Gather! Showing what can be earned on Gather is a great incentive to get more members and more people to view and sponsor Gather.

Wow!! I just don't know what to say in that matter. I have yet to cash in on gather. I might do that this week.
Good luck with your first cash out!
Thanks for clearing that up. I was asked last year and had no problem telling everyone how much I made on Gather.
I don't see the issue either!
Bridget last year the local newspaper here in Pittsburgh did a article about Gather. That is when I was asked about earnings from Gather. I will try to find it if I can.
So cool that they asked you Bridget!!!
Thanks Pamela!
Yw :-) You are a good representation of Gather!
Bravo, Bridget!!! I totally agree with what you say about Gather earnings. I like seeing the PROGRESS of other earners, and sharing mine. Same with my other income. I am on a disability benefit, and it's really not the world's business how much I get a month, or with my husband's SSI, but our Gather earnings are "common knownedge" We like people to know just how GOOD Gather is about suplimenting our small incomes. Because of Gather, we are able to leave our benefits pretty much for household expenses, and our leisure activities up to Gather, writing about our fun after spending our points, thus earning more points!!! It's a great way to prove that Gather actually WORKS!
Thanks Bridget
You have earned quite a bit from gather. I dont see any problem with people posting their gather earnings. I like reading these articles.
cool it is sort like we know a star in our midst,,,
Thanks
WOW!! You are a GREAT Gatherer!!
Wow!! I'm so happy for you!
I was here earlier and read this and went and posted something then realized I hadn't commented or rated on it. I must be getting old.
Now I can say I have a famous friend LOL
LOL to Vivian, famous gather friend, Bridget:)
It's no big deal as long as you agreed. Gather is great for some extra spending money, but beyond that it offers many more benefits such as meeting on-line friends in person and like in my case becoming a much better photographer.
I like sharing my excitement over any winnings with my gather friends too - I think it's good for gather. I'm happy that they are getting the word out there.
The funny thing is that now with the points update, do you think you will be making the same this year? So, they are telling people basically it's possible to make this much, but the system has changed since then! Very interesting!
The only reason I wouldn't want people to know my Gather earnings is because then it becomes a "earning" hierarchy and people like to hate those at the top. In fact, I find that I avoid a certain person's posts because I know he/she earns a ton here and he/she doesn't need my help! I will say though, that I don't feel like I have "bonded" with that person either, so it isn't just because of earnings, but that plays a small part.
aN "earning" ... uggg please have the Gather gods create a comment editor!
Well, it showed what people could make. Who knows about the future.
Thank for sharing
I didn't think Gather would ever publish the earnings of a member without asking for permission first...but I can see how this may have been disconcerting to some.
I also believe that members will continue to make the same amount on Gather, or more. However, the wealth will now shift to a different segment of the community that know how to work the system.
That is interesting. So my theory that the points pie has shrunk significantly is probably wrong.
Sassy...not at all. I didn't mean that ALL members will earn the same amount...just that some of them will. Thus, there will be a portion of the community that will still grab a bigger piece of the pie...however big (or small) that pie is.
I simply find the timing of the article a bit weird since points have dropped off for most.
It's good that they asked your permission...however I think them disclosing how much people have earned in points is pretty tacky....haha remember that word? tacky...XD more tacky drama jk Not trying to start drama...just sayin that's my opinion.
Those were "the good old days" ;o)
I'm glad those days are way behind us! LOL!
it is good they got permission first before publishing your earnings
"YES, 100% YES! I was asked for permission. "
Lies! All vile lies! You know as well as I do that Gather has a mind reading ray gun that is powered by all the Gather Points™ that no one is earning since the point change.
I heard Elvis was the program leader
*nods* :0)
lmao! Heather, I love you! And so does Elvis.
can't say i earn that much every month. some the way they talk the get enough points every month to do that. They changed it now should slow down for everyone..
Earnings are down, but gather wants to play them up I think! I just cashed out today, I wonder how long it will take me to cash out again~
I got the message from Lisa too, but they didn't publish my quote. They asked what Gather points meant to me. I didn't mention any specific earning amounts because I'm not really sure how much I've earned! I know it's only in the hundreds. I would have told them how much I've earned if I knew.
I didn't include my earnings in the quote I sent to them! They added that in the edited quote they sent back and asked permission to use! :)
I think Gather is a great place to earn extra spending money too. Most of my earnings have been gift cards given as birthday gifts throughout the year.
Cool, I was pretty sure you had given permission!
Well, I'm glad they asked your permission. I can't see why they wouldn't though. And, wow, you've made a lot! Go Bridget!
interesting.....I love gather and hope to continue to earn and learn and grow
:)
Go you! :) I'm glad they asked permission... not that I'd ever think they wouldn't ask - TPTB are many things, but stupid is generally not one of them. :)
