I would hope these members were asked if Gather could release their monetary earnings in this news item? Personally, I don't think it's anyones business what I earn here except for the IRS!

So let me get this straight.....it's OK for Gather to make money off US,(news,advertising,etc), BUT , they are making it harder for us to make money off THEM???? Hmmmmmm, doesn't seem right to me;)
For now I am just going to consider myself lucky to be a part of Gather, because most social sites don't give their users anything at all. Myspace makes TONS of money but they don't share a cent with their members. Same with Facebook. The only DECENT social site I am aware of besides Gather that gives their members anything is Cafemom- they have contests and stuff sometimes.
So far my points have remained steady (the increase) from what was going on a few weeks ago so I'm not suffering just yet (I've never consistently made 100 points a day though).

You didn't witness all the half-baked updates and upgrades, the protests, the wars (not little between-a-couple-of-people disputes, but group warfare), how many times questions at the Help Forum have been completely ignored or answered with nebulous replies. A member gets jaded after awhile as to what management is really up to, what they'll do next.
I have never once said that they should not make money off of it or complained about how much money they do make, because I have no idea how much they make.
My whole point in objecting to how much they decreased the points earnings is that quite a few of my friends are talking about leaving. They wouldn't be saying that if the points hadn't been cut. I realize times are rough and probably that way for Gather. But if lots of people leave, will ther be a Gather?
If people did not complain, stated their opinions on how they felt, Gather management would not realize what we want changed. You said yourself that the place could use some improving. I believe you called the post editor "rubbish"
It's typical commercial hype. The earnings sound like a lot until you figure out that it's 2 or 3 years of earnings. When you realize it's not even $100 month, it's real.
I know the one was asked and granted permission. Tom mentioned it in his post the other day. I can't speak for the other but I would assume if one was asked, they were both asked.
I wouldn't mind if they mentioned the thousands of dollars I've earned on Gather since I've been a member...even without persmission. I'd also like them to do that now...to see my daily totals the way they were before the 'new move'...to a lousy dime a day now...and that's for being on 10 or more hours. Hello? Making a penny an hour??? How long do they think I or anyone else is going to stick around for such a 'great' payback? I can make more than a quarter by picking up empty bottles and cans off the street. Spening 10 hours a day doing that; I'd be making a lot more than I did here even before the change. Hmmm...now there's an idea. Dump Gather and collect empties.
I hope you are right. But you've probably noticed that right now there are a lot of people who are here only for the points. I'm not saying anything against that, some of them are quite strapped financially and every cent helps

I think they should have put freaking a spell check option on here!!! I dont write many posts,and even when I do, I dont recve a whole lot of feedback, (to those that always comment I want to thank you!!!! Please do not think I take it for granted at all!!!) I just write things that a lot of people probably just dont wish to read, and for me that is cool, writing is my therapy, and I can do it, without paying someone to sit across from me nodding their head and hopping up as soon as my 45min is up.. ok, yes I went to a place a couple of times, and found out that I am not crazy!!! yep, I couldnt believe it either!!! I like Gather, I like my friends on here, I like they are friendly and supportive, and there are some really wonderful writers on here, but, again, I think that if you tell people that you are going to earn some amazing points for posting and COMMENTING, then, you cant have folks commmenting for hours to look up and see that they have earned nothing for the day

Think of it this way, John...a pound of aluminum cans brings you in 75 cents. It takes 32 cans to make up a pound. Those same 32 cans, at a nickel deposit redemption, gets you $1.60. It's much better to take them back to the store than recycle them profit-wise.
I don't know what we are getting a pound here right now but it isn't much. I had 3 garbage bags crammed full and got $3 last wk. We don't have a deposit here in WA either so no redemption option.
I am almost certain that at least one of those people gave permission because it was said on Tom's chat thread about point changes, at least for that post anyway. I'm sure she would want to share that info with the world.
I do not believe that Gather would release this information without the permission of the member. Not only would it violate corporate ethics, but perhaps their privacy policy as well.

The more and more I am on Gather, the more the option of collecting cans as Rob mentioned, is beginging to sound better. I could make out better. Heck I have a state park right across the street with a camp ground. Think I couldn't scrounge up a boatload of cans? Not that I know what the going rate here in ky is for them, but its got to be better money wise than this. These points are at a near standstill now. Grant you I do enjoy reading many articles here. and giving my 2 cents worth on most of them. Ocassionally I find a topic and time for a post. But even with post I am finding that my points are hardly moving. I am really thinking that downsizing my time on Gather is my best option, or finding another site, if possible. I do appreciate the fact I can earn points, don't get me wrong, however, it is requiring more time, to earn a lot less, and somehow it doesn't make sense. Ok I am going to be tacky here and show my Gather 'panties'. I have been a member here since Sep 29, 2006, I spent almost a year away after the death of our son during that time and to date I have made $825.00 and won a $25 Borders gift card on something somewhere along the way.
That figures out to 33 months at 25.75 a month. if you don't include the year I was away it brings me up to $40.47 a month. I don't know about you but I sure ain't getting rich so it must be the people that keep me coming back. LOL
Well, I don't know much and I ain't Lutheran, but I gots to agree with Peter here first. Tacky, Tacky, Tacky. Just isn't done, I know I would never do it even if I had made anything worth talking about!

Disheartening it is to say the least. The robotic tasks of filling out boring and frustrating surveys one after the other all day, as I do sit here all day make no mistake, starts looking a hell of a lot more attractive. I must be valued to them for filling them out because I do still get rewarded for it, would do a lot better with just them than I did with Gather before the changes, but I didn't prefer it. Gather became my community. Surveys don't insult me though, and I am broke now, makes more sense to consider earning something and not being hurt than to continue here. This do reek, don't know yet, only know I lost me heart

Two things I found a little misleading about that article:
The earnings announced doesn't indicate how long it took for those two members to earn over $2,000. Monica has been "earning" since 2006.

How is it the leading social network? MySpace and Facebook are the leading, first mentioned in the top ten. I rarely see Gather mentioned anywhere!
