Okay, so we are going on a cruise next month and swimming with dolphins and hand feeding stingrays. We are planning to snorkel too - at Disney's private island. These are not things you get to do everyday so I wanted to get a camera that could handle it and capture some great memories. I ended up buying an Olympus Stylus Tough 8000 which is supposed to be waterproof up to 33 feet deep underwater, as well as shock proof, crush proof and many other great features. Since our trip is about a month away I really wanted to go test out my new camera underwater and see how it worked BEFORE we left for the cruise just in case I screwed up, I wanted to have time for necessary repairs. SO tonight after work hubby and I took the kids and the camera down to the local swimming pool right down the road. Here are the results of the first test run with the camera.
Matt took this photo of me - I think I am going to start using it as my new icon.... what do you think?
This was my first attempt to take one underwater - I was stupid though in that I was underwater too, completely, instead of being above water with just the camera down.

Lily is hilarious in that she was still trying to pose EVEN while swimming under water LMAO

Here I am being goofy and silly - I opened my eyes really really wide on purpose trying to look pyschotic and silly...

I love how it captures the bubbles.
Drake was trying to pose in this one, he said, "Mom, take my photo while I am upside down underwater
I LOVE this one because it shows how the camera completely underwater even though my subject - Drake - is not.

My sweet hubby

I like the bubbles in this one of Lily...

Here are some above water right after - I was impressed the water didnt bead up and ruin the photos ...

Here are more below water - I enjoy how cool the bubbles look in the next one!

I usually HATE HATE HATE having my photo taken but we were having fun with the camera - I really like the next two of me even though the second one has a few water spots BUT Matt was dripping on them! LOL

Lily was having a great time too...

I think the next shot of my hubby is cool - I don't know why he left his glasses on underwater...

Then when he came up for air...

Matt took this photo of me by accident but I LOVE IT!!! It shows exactly how much weight I have lost. If you don't remember how big I was go back and look at LAST SUMMER'S camping photo essays I posted - I was 240 pounds!!! This is my waist now - you can see it YAY!
A few random shots...

I think Drake's expression in the next one is HILARIOUS - He was trying to smile for the photo but looks like he is taking a crap or something...

I also like the next one - I think with both of us reaching forward it looks cool...

More random shots -

Daddy giving the kids a ride...

Even though you can only see part of Lily's face in this next one - I love how happy she looks...

Here is a shot I took right as Matt was doing a cannonball - I love it that I captured the splash he made perfectly...

I love that I caught Drake half in the water on his dive...

Lily started getting cold...

Time to go home now - but I don't wanna go home....

Thank you for looking at my trip to the pool!!
I LOVE the camera - it works great and was exactly what I wanted. All the photos were taken with it - an Olympus Stylus Tough 8000. I would definitely recommend this camera to others.

There all great, a water proof camera would be Awesome!
Thank you Rodney
WONDERFUL shots of your family and of course of YOU! Ya'll look like you were having a great time. Nice job with that camera choice! ;)
Thank you Esther!
That camera is slick. Great pictures. Thanks for posting to kodakmoment
I love it!! Thanks Janet!
that's pretty cool that your camera can go underwater
I think so too - LOL that is why I got it!! I didn't really believe it could which is why I wanted to test it before the cruise - I am so glad it lived up to it's advertising I LOVE IT!
Fun test photos. Glad your purchase was what you expected and will work out well for your trip.
Does it shoot underwater video?
YEP the only thing it doesn' t do well is ZOOM :( but everything else makes up for that! :)
New camera...............? What an excuse to go have some fun. I see your daughter is a regular ham. Impressive camera.
-R.
She is the biggest ham!! Thanks for the comment!
That looks like the funnest photo shoot ever!
It was a blast!!! NOw I am more excited about the camping trip and the cruise knowing I won't have to worry about getting my camera wet! I am happy!
Cool and fun shots. Swimming with the dolphins will be exciting.
I can't wait!
How fantastic! I love my Olympus, though mine is an older, non-waterproof version (though it is weatherproof, so it can withstand some moisture :) )
It looks like you guys had a ton of fun!
We did thanks Tory!
I had fun swimming
ME too honey!!! I love you!
cool underwater shots
Thank you Dave
They are brilliant.
Thank you
Looks like a great time, and that your camera was up to the task.
We did have fun - thanks! :)
that's terrific! As someone who has done underwater photography - take a bunch of different colored items (marbles, plastic kids toys, whatever sinks), and toss them in the bottom of your pool and photograph them. This will give you an idea of how often you'll need to rely on the flash to retain the red end of the spectrum while you're under water.
Are you an experienced snorkeler? 33 feet is nothing, and I can skin dive up to 60 feet deep, so if you're a good snorkeler/skin diver, you might want to get a depth gauge from your local dive shop so you don't crack your lens by diving too deep.
nope not experienced at all will probably stick close to the top! LOL They sell a housing for it which makes it able to go down to something like 200ft. or so.
This is really interesting information from both you and Rachel. I especially liked the bit about the "colour"(yeah, I'm Canadian, ay) distortion or loss in underwater photography.
-R.
Rachel - thank you for the ideas about the colorful items to test color in the water photos! I appreciate it!
Roger - thanks!
Also wanted to mention none of the photos in the essay used flash - flash was off the entire time.
It would be so cool to have a waterproof camera!!
It is cool :) I think I will enjoy it alot!
You certainly got some incredible shots! I love the one with Lily and the bubbles, and the ones of you and Drake! Matt's cannonball splash is fantastic--they're all just great!! I cannot wait to see the shots you'll get with the waterslide next month!
I know I am going to have a blast with it at the campground pool!!!!
I can't wait to see you tomorrow - I am glad you are coming to my house party with that sweet family of yours!
In the one of Lily that has all the bubbles she had jumped in from the side of the pool and asked me to try to capture it - that is where all the tiny bubbles came from - it was her jumping into the water LOL. I love the camera!
You really got some great shots with your new camera! Good idea to get used to it before you go on that fantastic trip.
Thank you Heidi - I just know that trips like the one we are taking are not something you get to do everyday so I want to have enough practice to be able to get some great shots!!
If you are going on the Disney Cruise, you will have the time of your life. They are the best, IMHO. I've been on other cruise lines, and love the Disney one the most. (I thought it would be a nightmare - a ship full of kids - but they are amazing)
Anyway, also, when you are snorkeling and taking pictures, it's best to be slightly under the object you are shooting - I wound up with a bunch of pictures of fish tails, but it was fun anyway :o)
Thanks for the advice. We are going on the Disney Wonder 4 day Bahamma Cruise - that has the extra day at sea. THank you so much for the advice about being slightly under the subject while snorkeling!
wow you got some great pictures....congrats on losing the weight...I'm on the same track but not as far along as you...keep up the good work. that picture with the splash is awesome..aren't underwater cameras fun! I bought a disposable one a couple years back and had some fun with it but didn't get nearly the quality you have with your cool camera! have a great vaca with it!
Thank you very much Debby - it is a great camera - I bought if off Amazon.com using some of my Gather gift cards to help cut the price!! :) It isn't as expensive as you would think it would be - just over $350 so it is pretty affordable.
Wow, that is an awesome camera! You have some great shots here & you will have awesome ones from your upcoming trip!
Thank you Priscilla - I am really looking forward to the trip - I don't get to go places very often. I think that is part of why I love looking at all the wonderful photos you take at all the different places you go! :)
Thanks Kimber, you are so sweet!
Love your new icon too!
Thank you :)
Wow, I can't believe what great pictures it took. P.S. I am very jealous about your cruise. I want to go :)
Thank you Jessica - we get to go on the cruise b/c we have great parents!! My inlaws are taking the whole family and they paid for the cruise. We pay for our own shore excursions/souvenirs/extras but they foot the bill for the airfare and ship. IT was REALLY NICE of them!! THey are the best!
Kimber, I love these photos! I'm going to have to add your camera to the list that I've been looking at. I find the colors to be absolutely stunning. The blues are so vibrant! And the details are amazing.
Congrats on keeping the weight off! I know it's a hard struggle.
If you do get it keep in mind that it DOES NOT ZOOM very much - but other than that it is a fantastic camera and the benefits by far make up for the lack of zoom. I ALSO love that it has a beauty setting which will smooth skin over (like airbrush the shot right when you take it) it is hilarious - I made my hubby's stubble disappear in one shot! LMAO. It also has great software which lets you edit right in the camera or when you load them to computer and is really easy.
Thank you for wishing me luck with the weight loss, I appreciate it. It isn't the weight that bothers me so much as I didn't used to have any stamina to go do anything and a simple hike would send me into an activity induced asthma attack - I am doing MUCH better now!!! :)
cool underwater shots!! I love the look of bubbles underwater.. very cool!
Thank you - I really like the bubbles too. I can't wait to take the camera snorkeling though!!!
THis is a very good shoot.
Hey and congrats of losing the weight!
Looks like everyone had a blast.
Thank you Dan - and we did have a really great time! :)
Great pictures! Neat camera!
Thank you :)
This is really neat. I don't have the underwater kit for my camera. I think I'd be afraid to take it underwater anyway. I'd rather buy one of those underwater disposal cameras.
This wasn't using an underwater kit - it was the camera itself!! Pretty cool huh? It is crushproof, shockproof, coldproof, and weather proof too - guess that is why they put "tough" in part of its name - I love it!
Wow, that's really cool! I love the flying water and other actions shots, and it is SO cool to get the bubbles underwater! That's a really nifty photo review you have there.
Thank you Barb - I was pleased with how well so many of them turned out!! We went back today and took more photos but I haven' t gotten them up yet. I love capturing the divers in the air or part in the water and part out or even the splash - they are so much fun.
Having a water proof camera really does open up a whole new world of photos. Like Peter said, it's not often you get to see things underwater so clearly.
It is fun and challenging trying to learn how to take them while underwater too - timing has to be just right AND you can't see that well while doing it!! Still fun though! Can wait to try it when I have snorkel equipment
If you keep doing stuff like this you could eat like a horse and still be skinny. What fun!!!
I hope you get a lot more cool photos to share. It's not everyday I'm looking at things underwater, not like that, not myself !!!
Woot !!!
Thank you Peter - that is twice in a row now you have made my day! :)
that is very cool!
Thank you!
I've been thinking about getting a new camera. Mine is 8 years old and doesn't hold a charge very well anymore. I was hoping to stay around $100-150, but I am loving the sound of this one! My kids love swimming and waterparks, so a waterproof camera would be really nice.
It is very much worth the money!!! Doesn't zoom very well but the waterproof is what I bought it for and I love it!! DO what I did and save amazon gift cards and then buy it on amazon using the gift cards to take some of the sting out of the $350 price tag.
very cool camera, love the splash Matt made!
Though I wish it was a better zoom cause I am thinking about buying a back up that is water proof and I need it to zoom like "cloth fiber" good.
Thanks!!
I wish it zoomed better too - but the ones that did that were out of my price range :) up in the thousands instead of just hundreds!! Good luck to you, you are an excellent photographer (I love my wedding photos) and I hope you get one - You Deserve It!
Looks like it takes some very cool photos! I love the underwater ones, and I'm amazed that it doesn't have water droplets on it after you take it above the water to shoot. Very cool essay, and what a fun camera to have on your vacation!
Thanks Victoria - I am pretty pleased with it :) Feel like it was money well spent! :)
Wow Kimber!!!! Completely and absolutely amazing! lol That camara rocks the pics are unbelievable, your trip, fabulous, I am definitely big, big jealous here and and a new hot bod for you to go with it?? My goodness! Wonderful! You do have a wonderful family, all have such fun and obviously truly love each other. Any and all good things that come to you, you all deserve and then some. Enjoy!!
Thank you so much Ruth!! You are so sweet - HUGS!
These are really great pictures. I will have to be envious of your camera for a while. It look like you guys had a great time. I think my favorite one is the splash that you caught. That is so cool. Thanks for sharing the photos from your new camera! Have a great time on your vacation.
Thank you LaRae! I think the splash one is my favorite too - I made it the desktop on my computer! LOL
Wow, that is so cool! Now I want a waterproof camera! I believe my dear, that you have opened your own little niche on gather! Underwater photos!!!
So I guess I am being Original then? LOL - thank you!
Wow this takes fantastic pictures and your pictures were so fun to see. Have a great time on your trip, I bet you will get some fantastic shots.
Thanks!
lol ~ luv the pics! 10
Thanks Gwen!
these are awesome!!!!! great job!!!
Thank you Diana!
Oh my Goshers! I love, love, love these photos!!! They make me so happy because they look like such fun. I love how your daughters tooth is growing in. You are going swimming with the dolphins, I bet that will be a blast and a half! Have fun. Oh, and do think of me just for a second while you are swimming on a dolphin because I'm sure I will feel it briefly too!
I will do that! Thank you for the compliments on my photos too. They were a lot of fun. I am going to email the dolphin encounter people tonight explaining that I am a blogger and post free advertising for them all over all the websites I am on if they will let me bring my camera into the encounter (usually they don't let cameras come in because of them having staff photographers and wanting to sell their photos) I am hoping if I explain to them they will get a lot of exposure out of it they will allow it
I will enjoy the dolphin swim either way! I know I will use the underwater camera for the snorkeling and the stingray adventure on the other island the next day if I don't get to use it for the dolphins
those were great
Thank you!
Some really great shots! :)
