Well, about dinnertime last night I placed the last stitch into Gideon's Harry Potter costume. At about sunset we went out and took photos of it, then the storms came in... and I was offline for the night. (All night long we were in and out of tornado watches, warnings and flash flood warnings)
So, the weather is calm and here are the photos of little Gideon in his costume. As always, his face has been covered for security reasons. The focus is the costume anyway, so I don't see it as a problem.
This costume is 100% hand sewn. Each stitch was sewn twice in strong button thread to assure it'll hold up for a while.
Front of the costume - hood down.

Back of it - hood down.

Back view with the arms out.

Front view - hood up and arms out. Gideon appears not to like the hood up but on Halloween he might rethink that for warmth LOL

Gideon opened up the robe to show off his wand pocket. His wand that he made is in there too!

Gideon hamming it up with his homemade wand.

Expecto Trollus! (That's how he says one of the spells.)

I asked Gideon if he liked it and he did.In fact his friend who I had been watching earlier that day came rushing over to see the costume and posed with Gideon for 2 photos. :)
I asked Clint if it was worth the 3 weeks of work and he said yes. He commented that he liked the clasp, but once I said what they costs he seemed to like it less LOL! He even asked where I bought them (Walmart - cheapest place) But all in all the costume came out fairly well.
I'll start working on the animals to rest from the robes and to buy some time before I have to buy the fabric for mine (It's going to run $40 for my fabric at a mere $2 a yard)

Wow, you really did an amazing job Jennifer. I bet Gideon was extatic!
Thank you so much! He was super excited to wear it and really really likes it.
I seriously doubt we'll win the contest, but if we go to the movie (we are considering it - only thing stopping us is the CROWDS) we'll wear them there and to the fest four days before and trick or treat treating at the Caves and on Halloween. And I'm sure we'll wear them more in the future as well.
Very nice!
Thank you!
Nice!
Thank you!
Great essay. Thanks for posting it to our Kodak Moment group.
Thanks Janet and you're welcomed!
It looks great!
Thank you Sophie!
I love it! You did such a good job, not sure I would of had the patience to hand sew it.
Thanks Renee. I do have a sewing machine but I'm pretty clumsy and not as productive (or straight) on it so I went by hand. I should be doing mine by hand too unless I have to go the other route due to time restrictions.
That turned out really well, he'll be the envy of every kid out there on halloween, even those with store bought Harry costumes (which will be flimsy and falling apart). Congrats!!
Thanks so much Theresa. I thought some of the store made ones did look flimsy, and they cost $25 for a kid Gideon's age. I paid $10 for the fabric pls $3 for the hook. That's it! (The patches were bought by a friend in KY for us off Ebay) even adding that in we paid $3 under the store bought cost (the crest on the store bought ones seems less nice than the embroidered one.. I think it's painted on) and I doubt those ones have wand pockets inside and the sleeves are not wide enough like the real Harry Potter ones are.
I did my best to get this as close to the real one as I could.
It looks great! I have to admit I saw your unedited version before you realized your mistake. I won't tell anyone what a cutie he is ;)
LOL Shannon! I saw that and realized the misktake. Whoops! :P
Thanks, you are just special to have seen he has more than a heart for a face. ROFLOL!
great job!
Thanks Robyn!
WoW Jen ~ TEN. You really worked hard on this! I hope that you have COSTUME DESIGNER on your list of THINGS TO DO ~ L O L!
Thanks. I did work hard on it but it was worth it all. I bought my fabric today - $41 worth! EEEK! The lady thought I was making curtains with all those yards LOL!
And no it's not on my list, but ironically enough, my aunt ran a costume shop years ago. I wanted to intern there for a summer, but I was in NY and she in OH and it just never worked out.
CURTAINS?!!! ~ ahahahaha ~ You and Gideon never cease to amaze me with your CREATIONS Jen.
I remember you telling me about your Aunt and her Costume Shop ~ and you SEE it stuck with you. You really are GOOD at COSTUME DESIGN Jen...It's never too late to get to DESIGNING ~ DESIGNING WOMAN ~ L O L.
[I guess that is evident by this creation huh.]
LOL yeah well I asked for 8 yards of the black and 10 1/2 of the maroon. She couldn't guess what I needed it all for! I did tell her and she said something about one tomorrow. Well darn what's going on then?
Well, when in high school I took a sewing class and made a dress and sweatshirt (I still have both here) so that's where it really started, I suppose. But it didn't really go too far after that. I did make some pillow cases for Gideon since but that's just about it aside from his other costume... the bee. My aunt made the costume, but I made booties and a hood for it at that time. That was Gideon's first costume.
I've already started on the Cat for my costume. She has a pet cat LOL
Nice job. I made one of these before. I hate making things that have a lining.
Thank you.
Yes, the lining complicates things and adds expenses. I walked in walmart and bought 10 1/2 maroon yards and 8 years black (I have 2 1/2 here) and I tell you I'd have loved to pay for half of that because it's not cheap!
WoW~ You did an excellent job. =)
Thank you very much!
WOW-O WOW-O WOW!!!! I love it! You did a pheomenal job!!!!!!!!! It looks superb! I'm so proud! :) Even with a machine! You seriously outdid yourself! Great job Jen! I'm sure he loves it!
Thanks so much, Christy! I'm proud, too, now I just need time to recreate the same thing for myself. Eeek!
This wasn't machine done, though. It's hand done. :P
He does love it. :-)
That came out awesome!
Thanks so much!
Wow! it really came out great!
Nice work!!!
Thanks so much! Gideon just loves it too. Was worth every minute I spent on it!
