Father's day is on June 21st.. This is a humble tribute from an unworthy son to his late, beloved father.
The day is pleasant with a whiff of cool breeze caressing the trees
And the marigold flowers swaying merrily inviting the bees;
It's just the day to sit down in retrospection of the days gone by
When I was a little bird in my father's nest, before I learned to fly.
My father would dress me up each morning, ready to go to school
Oh! How I hated it, but he would cajole me saying, "Son! Don't be a fool!"
"Unless you learn the 3 'R's, you cannot grow up to be a man
And enter the big bad world where nobody will care a damn."
Late in the evenings I heard my father's childhood stories, sitting on his lap
He would then read out stories from history, inducing me to take a nap;
He woke me up for dinner, with promises of my favorite food
But I was too sleepy to eat and not at all in the mood.
He would promise me a prize if I ate my dinner fast
I knew he had a trick up his sleeve, so his words I believed last;
My mother's patience exhausted, she would threaten to punish me
But my father would come to my rescue and tell her, "Just wait and see!"
On warm summer nights we slept outdoors with the stars twinkling above so high
I saw many geometrical figures, as I gazed at the vast expanse of the sky;
I asked, "Papa, which is the star where I was born?"
He would point at a constellation and say, "There it is, Leo, next to the horn".
As I grew older the school curriculum became too taxing on my limited brain
I often cried in despair as my dream of becoming a scientist went down the drain;
My father would sit with me and help me solve the problems at hand
I wondered if fathers were like the fairies who used a magic wand.
After my graduation I was on the threshold of leaving the nest
In search of a new career which my father thought was best;
He shared with me all the wisdom meticulously collected over the years
And urged me to be honest, diligent and always remain above my peers.
Alas! He has left for his heavenly abode and I miss his presence all the more
I still remember his words when he saw me off for the last time at the door;
"Son! Never yearn for wealth and fame, it will come to you whenever it is due
Identify a target in life and strive towards it, always keeping it in view".
