Have any of you experienced your children complaining of leg pains at night? I wonder if my little Katie is growing, or needs different shoes? (She has several pair already!) Or maybe she needs more calcium or something?
Any ideas would be helpful!

Yep, both my kids. We call it 'growing pains'. It's pretty common.
My daughter had the same thing, growing pains.
Several things can cause it, and I don't want to be accused of practicing medicine. A shortage of salt can cause cramps, but there are several other causes. Oddly enough, leg cramps will almost always disappear if one stands up and, just by using the leg muscles, pulls the toes and the front of the foot up off of the floor for a few moments.
Growing pains are a far cry from leg cramps, George. Ask anyone that suffered from them while growing up!
Well, I know that "growing pains" is a catch-all term for any pain that a kid has. I also know that medical science says there is now such thing as growing pains per se. So when kids have pains that aren't cramps, they really should see a doctor, but it is a good idea to see if they are cramps first.
I figured that were pretty much growing pains, but I will ask the doc next time we see her. My little Katie is only 38 pounds and shy of four feet tall. She's only 4! No matter how much I feed her, she just keeps getting taller, and I often wonder if that's making her bones sore.
Thanks for input!
My Grandmother called them 'growing pains' too and that's what I told my own kids when they suffered from them. No matter what they are called they are VERY real and hurt like HELL! Nice to remember getting some 1 on 1 time with her tho when she would massage our legs with some warm camphorated oil and distract with a special story.
Now that I am WAY past the growing stage there is RLS to deal with...where is Grams when I need her? LOL!
I do know she enjoys the one on one time, but as an only child, she GETS A LOT of it. lol :)
My pastors son had bad leg cramps. They thought it was from growing pains and it ended up there was a problem with his heart and the blood circulation wasn't getting to his legs.
I'm sure this is not the problem with your child but if she continues to complain about it too long I would definitely have the doctor check her blood pressure that is how they found out about his.
whoa. will do. thank you!
Growing pains, many people get them as a child.
I will keep her in my prayers. Pain, no matter hwat it is called, HURTS!
Ahhh... thank you. very kind.
Yep. Growing pains are common.
I know as a child, I used to stretch A LOT in bed. And it always cramped them up. "Charlie horse" is the slang for it I think. They are painful!
Try applying pressure with your hands. It always works with my son (4 years old). I basically put my hands around the leg and give it a good squeeze and hold it for up to 10 sec. then move onto another spot. Start about a hand wide above the ankle and move up towards the knee.
My son Levi had them. He grew to be 6"4! Growning pains is what the Dr. said.
