The New York Times published a front-page story on May 21 claiming that 1 in 7 prisoners released from Guantanamo had returned to waging "jihad."
Quoting an unreleased Pentagon report, the NY Times wrote that many of the former Guantanamo detainees had "returned to terrorism or militant activity" as soon as they were released.
What exactly do the Pentagon and the New York Times mean by the "return to terrorism and militant activity"?
Among those who "returned to terrorism" are the "three English detainees whose militant activity was participating in the making of Michael Winterbottom's movie The Road to Guantanamo and seeking damages for their torture in U.S. courts."
Also, five Uighurs, "shipped off to Albania to forestall a court hearing on their release in 2006 and living in a run-down refugee camp there, whose crime was to complain to Tim Golden of the same New York Times about their miserable condition" are among those who had returned to waging "jihad."
And, by the way, there is no proof that any of the released prisoners have previously been engaged in "terrorist" activities. If there was any proof, they would not be released! So how could they "return" to something that they [probably] did not do in the first place???
This propaganda piece published in the New York Times was immediately picked up by Dick Cheney, who said in a speech that "1 in 7 [released prisoners] cut a straight path back to their prior line of work and have conducted murderous attacks in the Middle East."
The New York Times rightly predicted that this "1 in 7 report" is very likely to "strengthen the arguments of critics who have warned against the transfer or release of any more detainees as part of President Obama's plan to shut down the prison by January."
Never mind the report and the article are based on lies!
Many people thought the New York Times would learn a lesson from the Iraq War debacle when they bought into Bush administration's lies [without any skepticism] that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
Instead, they continue to this day to be a mouthpiece for Pentagon's propaganda and lies!

Thanks for noticing and pointing this out Berf.
I wanted to leave a comment but couldn't figure out what to say and "So? What's your point?" didn't sound right, now it does.
Good that you are keeping track... you can even report me... if Pentagon considers those who appear in a movie about Guantanamo prison as terrorists, what am I after writing about American crimes, torture, and abuse...
Berf,
You of all people have no reason to be jealous of another Gather member who gets lots of views and comments because they publish a lot of articles.
Carol, I am hardly "jealous".....
Lee got my point, ask him about it.
That is a 14% recidivism rate. Actually, that is a rather low recidivism rate compared to the general criminal population.
