I just found out about the change in Gather points from Tom's article this morning. I guess I was wondering why I was all over Gather today but my points barely budged. Now I know the reason.
At first, reading the comment thread on his article, I could understand why there were those who were a bit angry. Why should we spend all our time viewing and commenting on every one else's articles without being compensated as well? Then I switched my focus to the Gather members who put a lot of time and effort into their articles, ones we find very rewarding in just reading, and wondered why their viewers were being compensated at a higher level then they were? The creators.
So, in closing, I would like to acknowledge the 'content producers' here on Gather and let you know that I will still read, and comment on ocassion, your articles if they are of any interest to me. I am glad you will be reaping the benefits of your hard work.
I would also like to come right out and say what has to be said, even if it is hard to hear - if I notice any copy and paste articles that were taken word for word from some other source I will notify Gather (not if you copy and paste a snippet of a news article, with the link and credit, and then your own opinion - that's different). I just wanted to let you know. If it's you, and you find out someone ratted you out - it IS possible that it's me. It's also possible it's another Gather member that has a sense of honor and integrity, who will not be able to sleep with a good conscious knowing that the original author is being robbed when their content is Googled while you reap the rewards.
With that said, thank you Tom. It will be difficult for some of us to get used to the new point system, but I think in time it will turn out to be a good and productive change. It could possibly mean a more rewarding experience not just for those who make it all possible - the writers and photographers - but for Gather as well in attracting advertisers and outsiders to the site. Here's to more enriching content and less fraud!

Because "fair use" is a subjective judgement, I have only been putting headlines with a link recently. I know a lot of people will post an entire article from a different source and those will now not gain any points.
I have noticed you doing that, Walker, and that's not what I mean. That seems to be fine. Even copying a small portion with a link to the whole article seems to be fine and does not violate any rights, with a bit of a personal opinion attached. The articles I'm talking about, however, are the ones which I have seen recently that are copied and pasted from another source and the member here has taken credit for a professional opinion, misleading other Gather members. I was astonished when I found out about one person in particular recently - I was following their posts and commenting, and then it hit me and out of curiosity I went back through their posts and found out it was every single one from a different author on other prominent websites. Ouch!

The phantom troll has struck you, too. There's nothing here that even approaches a problem with Gather's TOS or copyrights. Somebody's toes have been stepped on and they think that this is the way to get even.
My daughter is NOT a troll and this is the first article she has ever commented on negatively. She has a right to her opinion as well.

Well, you should clarify there's no MONETARY Reward for commenting. There ARE rewards. Frankly the comments are the MEAT of the content. It's there we interact. It's there we learn, share and enrich each other's lives.
You also might find a return comment on YOUR stuff after commenting on someone else's content. There are rewards. And in a roundabout way there is also a MONETARY reward if they repay the "favor"
I think it's good you have integrity to protect the work of others. Good for you. As an artist, photographer and writer, I am clearly on the side of the copyright holders. :)

Apparently Meredith (above) believes this to be a hateful post. I don't believe I was harrassing anyone. I sincerely object to copywrite infringements and the damage it does to the original author. Oh well. :)
You're right, there are many rewards to commenting and interacting. Just like now. :) Tom did mention that we will be compensated for general use of the site, whatever that means, but that it won't be much if we aren't producing content. It makes sense to me. It won't stop me from parading around and reading articles like I do now.

i don't think your post is remotely hateful! i totally agree that people should not be simply cutting and pasting from other sources simply to have SOMETHING to put as content here on Gather... perhaps we will be seeing A LOT more interesting articles soon! :)
I would also like to point out that I LOVE books, and I buy many every year. I am never compensated or rewarded financially from reading someone elses work. I give my money to them to reward them for what I choose to read. So, I see Gather being fairly similar - except it's free. I don't have to pay to use the site and read what I am interested in (a variety of topics, including keeping up with what everyone does during their day - I find that fascinating in itself).
Absolutely! That's the way I see it too. And if it interests you read it if it doesn't move on (though I usually do rate and give a pageview to help out)
Ooo, what a great comparison! You're very right....I buy books and pay to read other people's content all the time, and 'they' are rewarded for it with monetary compensation, not the other way around. I get the enjoyment just out of reading their work and will continue to do so here, too. :)

It's no secret that I rate stolen content 1 and then either report it to Gather or find the real owner and inform them their work is being used by a low life who has no respect for their work.
My clique is quite large actually :) It's called People who post quality creative works.

People getting butt hurt because people are standing up for what is right? Do you get upset when an 80 year old grandma beats a punk that tries to snatch her purse? Yes I clump people stealing articles with punks stealing from little ole' ladies and I have no mercy for them, wrong is wrong.
Does anyone else see the hypocrasy of people known to have a certain condition that affects judgement and requires medication to keep under control calling someone else crazy? I find it offensive and amusing at the same time.
