Anyone watching Harper's Island?

A friend of mine got me hooked on the show.

It is just 13 episodes and episode 9 just aired Saturday so the pieces are falling into place.

Of course CBS had to jerk viewers around a little by switching it from Thursday nights to Saturday nights.  But episodes are available online for viewing.

I will say that I enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather except we've had mostly rain and my allergies are really bad this year.

I like watching our government "at work".........I think they should reassess their last few pay raises.....that would generate quite a bit of cash......

The political stuff makes me sick. 

All of the bailouts, thoughts of socialized healthcare. 

I have enough to worry about rather than stressing over that kind of stuff.

add 1957 to whatever they want to set the retirement age for us '57ers (3.6 million of us) and that is the year SS will fail...........

I'm not that organized Randee!  I also don't have to worry about it as I have a friend who calls me anytime there is a severe weather warning in my area!  :)

The healthcare junk is what scares me too right now.  I'm in Tn where they made a mess of our healthcare system and we are still spending more tax money on the healthcare than any other service in the state. 

there were more babies born in 1957 than any other year in the US.........gas prices went crazy in the 70's when we all got to driving age......unemployment numbers have never been the same since we all turned 18...... 

I worked in mental healthcare and can tell you that nobody won providers, patients, ins. companies.  NO ONE with the cover everyone system that was rolled out.  Misuse, Misuse, Misuse.

You are about my mom's age.  My Dad is a good bit older and is retired. 

if they want to fix healthcare, they have to start at ground level........doctors, nurses, hospital administrators......big cuts in wages.........in fact there are probably a lot of wasteful spending in the administrative section of the hospital system......

then......

insurance companies......

I don't even know where to start with that greed machine........ 

Getting Jobs back to US soil and having people suck it up and work for a living instead of having unions step in and drive employers out would be a good start.

Well I can say I wasn't getting rich quick.  I have a college degree and was making less than most teachers.   Sad to say that those in the auto industry are makeing 4+ times what I made.

I don't like the idea of someone telling me or trying to influence me to eat what they think is good for me.........

we would have starved to death if I tried to use my college education..........

I can agree with that.  I do think that we all need to be responsible for ourselves though.  If I smoke, drink or am overweight ok maybe I'll pay a little more for my healthcare coverage but I still should be able to have it.  You can give me the information but let me make the decision on what I'm going to do with that info.

Yep, sadly the college education won't get you $ unless you work for AIG.

Don't get me wrong I was a psych major so I knew I wasn't going into it for the money.

I have a tendancy to bring that out in most people J ............

it rained most of the morning here and then the sun came out......it is like 98% humidity so 72º feels like 95º

I don't necessarily think that self pay is a bad idea.  I'm one of those that rarely and I should say RARELY seeks medical tx and I'm still here.  I just don't feed into the idea that any time I ache or cough I should go see someone.

I've been fortunate enough to have health ins. through my employer while I was working then through my spouse.  I can say though that much more has been spent on ins than will ever be used but hey, that's the nature of insurance.

Ok.  Maybe I need to take the last part back.  I did have a tough pregnancy and the insurance had to pay out big time but other than that I've always been fit as a fiddle.

Sadly, I don't think we are going to be able to fix America's problems.  We have become a society of entitlement and excess and that is the root of a lot of our problems.

I'm climbing back up on the box again.  Sorry.

i'm gonna hop on the soap box, too.  unions are the root of all evil.  (if the members of my union heard that, i'm sure they wouldn't be happy, but..........)

my ex was a uaw member for 33 years. for the last 20, he was on & off of medical leave for no good reason.  milking the system & keeping his job thanks to the union.  he made $40+ an hour (back in the 80's) plus cost of living, plus full medical coverage, plus stock options, plus paid 3 week vacation, plus, plus, plus.  when he did work; he drove cars off the line in between the shots & beer.  there were more than a couple cars damaged coming off the line that got repaired & sent out to the dealerships.

unions promote shotty work for more pay.  i think unions should be abolished.  maybe here in motown things would be very different if the auto companies & the uaw hadn't gotten so greedy & too big for their britches.

Yes. Michelle the unions can be the root of evil.  It is one thing to advocate for employees but another thing to break the system by requiring so much that the companies take their production to other countries where they can get people to work for pennies on the dollar.

It would be nice if we could all act responsibly and do our best no matter what job or profession we chose.  Better pay does not equal better employees.

All of this political talk might get your post flagged Randee!

that is so true.  i'm part of the teachers union here in michigan.  i'm not a teacher; just a low on the pole paraprofessional.  i do think teachers should be paid their weight in gold with as much crap as they have to put up with.  however they should also be paid on merit.  once a teacher is tenured they become crabby & inefficient cuz they know the union will keep them around.

I've also seen a fair amount of folks who will post or comment to light or fuel a fire.

I would agree about teachers salary.  I worked as a counselor in a community mental health center.  I know where you're coming from Michelle.

i know a few of those people.  I forgot my smiley face in the last post!!  lol  :)

The pages on Gather load slower the more comments they have on them.

I really wish that Gather would start a chat feature.

I've also had a lot of practice commenting thanks to Randee's chats.

Gather does chats sometimes and there are over 500 comments on one post.  Talk about a page loading slow.  YIKES.  It's slow when there are that many on a page.

I'm also firing away since my goal is to be comment #100.
