Simple Tip For Spaghetti
Just got this great tip from a food blog I follow called Kate In The Kitchen.
When I use spaghetti for a pasta dish, I like to break the long noodles in half before I put them in boiling water. The trouble is, broken shards of noodles fly all over the kitchen. Until today! I tried this simple tip from Kate in The Kitchen and it worked perfectly! Try this:
Leave the pasta in the box and bend the box over the edge of your counter. Two hands works best but I could only use one hand since I had to hold the camera in my other hand! All the broken pieces stay in the box, eliminating the annoyance of finding them scattered around your kitchen for days to come.

NO! Basketti isn't basketti unless it's long, thin...basketti. How can I twirl it and stuff a wad two times too large into my mouth? (Don' forget extra sauce, some meatballs would be nice and lots of Italian bread and butter to dunk, dunk, dunk. I don't even need a salad, but some iceberg lettuce and matter; maybe some black olives; and Italian dressing would be nice. Just a small one so I have more room for those LOOOOOOOOONG strands of basketti.
I absolutely love reading your comments, Rob! You always make me smile! =)
I absolutely KNEW you would be a purist about this, Rob!!! I think I started "breaking the noodles" when my kids were small ... and now it's become one of those ingrained habits!!!
*GASP!*
You're a pasta breaker?! I'm so disappointed in you!
Um ... hate to disappoint, Ina!
Basketti! Yum!
Oh, yeah!!! Basketti!!!
I say Marianne ROCKS!! High-five to my fellow noodle-cracker! No matter how weird that sounds!
LOL! Back atcha, Tracy!!!
I always break mine in half and some of them always spray all over the stove......I'll have to try this next time!
This is one of those "aha" moments!!! Simple yet brilliant!!!
I like my spaghetti long! When I was a kid, I used to beg my mom to buy the extra long spaghetti.
No one's ever lonely eating spaghetti, that's for sure!!!
Spray of spaghetti all over the kitchen seems to be all of our familiar accurance. This is such a good idea! Thanks Marianne!
Just wish I could claim this as my original idea ...
Great tip! Does it work for the plastic packages, too?
Time to experiment, Alison ...
That's great tip!
Thanks, Buzzy!!!
Good tip.
I've always wrapped mine in a kitchen towel to break it in half then I could dump the little pices in with the noodles.
Your towel idea is a good one, too, Kat!
Cool I never thought of that.
Hubby hates that I break the noodles in half...LOL...but it's so much easier to cook that way.
I'm with the "break spaghetti in half?!?! no way" crowd on this. I lived in Italy for a couple of years - they don't break the spaghetti for their toddlers and they don't cut them - they teach them how to wind 'em on a fork, lol!
3-year olds are quite proficient! My 4 yr old learned in a couple of weeks - too embarrassing otherwise!
And you cook by sliding them into the water s-l-o-w-l-y so they have time to bend, ya know?!
Sorry Marianne :-)
LOL! That's quite alright, Cristina! It's one of the reasons I'll never be a great cook. I think the spaghetti still tastes the same no matter how long it is ... also, I try to use whole wheat pasta whenever possible. That's probably not PC (pasta correct) either!
Rob and M should do a road show together.
Comedy and cooking.
Forget following Kate in the Kitchen...this is better!

Sounds delicious!
Great tip. I confess, I too am a spaghetti breaker.
Marge, Do your neighbors know???
Simple tip?????????? Eh??????????? This is really complicated. I'm getting dizzy. I just took my blonde wig off and feel much better.
That IS a great tip! I am always hunting around for the broken pieces, and generally end up with burnt fingers :/
Good idea. I'd never thought of that. I'll try it next time. Only problem for me is that I buy our spaghetti in big 3 or 4 pound bags at Sam's Club. Bend the bag maybe? : )
Thanks for posting this to my group "Eating While Broke"!!
