Yesterday I saw two baby birds on our lawn. I checked the internet and they said to leave them there as their mommy will take care of them. They may be there for 3-4 days.
Today my husband checked them and one looked like he was really sick. So my husband cut up a worm real small and tried to feed them with an eyedropper. One of them ate pretty good but the other one was not doing so well. I called the wildlife office and they told me to get a container like a cool whip one, punch holes in the bottom and hang it from the tree. We saw the crumbled nest so they told us to put that in the container and put the birdies back in it. They felt that the moma bird will feed them still. They also told us to soak dog food in water till soft and feed that to them. We tried that and the one bird took it but the other one was having a really hard time. After we fed them we hung the new nest in the tree. These are the pictures before we removed them from the lawn.
The one on the right is worse off, it is hard to get him to open his mouth for food.

The one on the left will still feed. When we put them back in the nest all you had to do was tap the side of the bowl and she would open her mouth for food.

My husband trying to get the sicker one to take something.

The left one willing to eat whatever you give it.

I don't know if they are going to make it, but at least we are trying. My husband thought they might be robins but we are not sure.

It is very hard to tell what kind of bird they are at this point. These little guys are so "fresh". Cute shots Carol. Hopefully momma bird will take care of them.
Oh wow, what a great thing you are doing. I always wondered what I would do if I found babies. I am waiting for bluebird eggs to hatch, I hope they don't fall out of the nest. Maybe the Mom will come back soon. You got some great pictures.
That is wonderful that you are trying to keep them going until momma hopefully takes over. Great photos!
this happend to me when i was about 5. i fed them worms. but being 5 i didnt really know the whole regurgitating thing. and i found the bird the next day dead with half a worm hanging out of its mouth...oops....
That is why they told me to put the dog food in water till soft and make sure it is tiny and really wet. The worms that my husband fed them were cut up real small and mixed with water.
Carol, those may be baby Mourning Doves.
Could be Kat, we have a lot of them around here. That and thos grackle birds. I have been trying to watch from the window to see if I see any birds going into that tree, but I haven't seen any yet. I just hope they don't die, it is so sad.
LOL, I wish that gather would let you edit comments when you spell things wrong.
Nature can be heartbreaking.
Poor little things. You asre doing a good thing trying to help them out. Hopefully the mama will be back soon.
I hope they make it keep us updated. They are so cute.
I will Renee, I hope they make it too. But, the one is not doing so well.
awww- how sad, hope nothing happened to mama either
They are beautiful - gorgeous photo essay!
What kind-hearted people you are! I hope momma comes back soon!
you're being a great foster mom!!
good luck with this
Poor little birdies. I hope they will make it. When I fed young orphaned birds, I fed them strained baby food meat thinned with a little water.
Nature provides when it is the right thing to do. The mother may have abandoned them and you are trying to keep them alive.
So sad
Great pictures. Hope they make it. I had to feed a Scrub Jay once, but she was eager to eat.
I hope they make it.
They are tiny--dog food sounds interesting. Since different birds eat different things (seeds or bugs) I guess this covers it all. I hope they do well.
The lady at the wildlife place told me that dry dog food has the nutrition they need and the water hydrates them. I am still hoping that mama bird comes back and helps them.
It really is heartbreaking when this happens, isn't it? Best of luck to you trying to save them......
Well, good luck...I hope at least one of them makes it....and I'm not sure what kind they are yet either.
Good photos. Good luck with feeding them.
Awwwww, poor little birdies. I'm glad you are trying to take care of them. Some people wouldn't.
poor buddies glad they have you,, I sort of laugh you know reading this and your gather name emptynest1 you are super for trying,,,,
That is pretty funny Steph, but I have a different kind of emptynest.
yes I can relate to that son in army now it is just hubby and I
Carol, you and DH are 'good folks ' ! I applaud your efforts . Have you got some shots of 'em in the plastic bowl?
No I don't have pics yet of them in the bowl. My husband used a bowl that my dog would drink out of when we go on hikes. It has snowmen on it, lol. We put their nest in there and put it up in the tree. Hubby is at work and I can't reach it. Maybe tomorrow when we feed them, if they are ok by then.
I have no idea what kind of birds. Nice photos.
You really have wonderful photos here. I hope the mother bird will come back and feed them and take care of them. I'd love to see the new nest, how exciting. It's nice that you and DH are helping them thrive. good luck.
Thanks so much for sharing with my group.
They are def not robins. Do you have a local bird rescue? last year we found a baby robin on the lawn. I watched it for two days and the mom def was not feeding it. We took a colendar and made a nest out of it and attached it to the tree. we named the bird "noodle" since he had a colendar nest. The mom still didn't feed him. So we took him to a bird rescue (didn't cost anything). They said that with other birds in the nest "mom bird" probably didn't realize he was missing. he was dehydrated but they emailed us a month later and said that "Noodle" had flown away gloriously.
These look smaller than him though. These aren't even fledglings but nestlings. I think that they would greatly benefit by going to a rescue.
I called them and they told me how to take care of them. They said it is best to see if mama bird comes back. They won't take them because they get too many calls this time of year and can't take care of them all.
I hope mama comes back! poor little things!
How sad for those poor little birds. I hope they will make it with your help~
Aww...I hope they make it Carol.

Thank you all for your support.
I am so sorry that you lost them sweetie. You tried so hard. Sometimes nature is just like that, as sad as it is. Like you said, the have a peaceful resting place... I am so sorry you had this sad experience, but so grateful to you for trying to save them. You are a GOOD person. {{{HUGS}}}
Sad. When I was little I found two baby birds....put them in my Easter basket and Dad hung the basket on a rope with a pulley....that way I could lower the basket to feed them. It actually worked despite my sisters' teasing that it wouldn't.
Poor little guys. That's wonderful that you're trying to keep them alive.
Hope they make it.
