Around 1pm this afternoon an elderly man, believed to be James Von Brunn, a white supremacist shot a guard at the Holocaust Museum off of the National Mall in
Washington D.C. The gunman shot a guard before two other guards in the museum returned fire. The victim and guard have both been hospitalized.
The museum does have a strong security presence and visitors are required to walk through a metal detector upon entering the museum.
I'm absolutely shocked by the news. I first learned about it through a text message sent to me by one of my friends who works in D.C. I immediately went to look up the details. I've been to the Holocaust museum on several occasions and it is a very emotional experience. It's devastating enough to see the exhibits in the museum; I can't even imagine how scared visitors including families and children must have felt after this happened.
I'm curious to learn more about James Von Brunn. Does anyone have information on his history as a white supremacist? And does anyone know of past security threats on the Holocaust Museum?

Wow this is so sad. This is the first that I have heard about this.
White supremacists... racist bastards.
This guy had allready been in prison for his racist behavior. His racist buddies will make him out to be a hero.
Such a sad event. I would like to go to that museum someday, as well as several other museums and things in Washington. Last time I was there, I was 10 years old and didn't really appreciate the significance of things I saw.
Some people are just unstable ...
