Examiner just launched 20 new local sites this week. They pay a penny per page view, which isn't exactly the best, but I know a few people who write for them who claim to be pulling in several hundred dollars a post in highly searched topics.
I started this week as the National Social Media Examiner and am making around $4 a day off the 4 posts I have up there currently. I imagine that number will start to go up considerably as the pages get indexed on search engines and I build up some sort of readership.
I wouldn't recommend it as a job to pay the bills, but it could be a decent place to build up some clips in an area you're looking to break into. I just picked up the Craft Beer section in my town, which is something I'd like to start writing about in the future. I also know someone who is the college examiner just to build credibility and promote their upcoming book on colleges.

Interesting information. Is this Examinier down around the Outer Banks, too? I know they have a publication called The Sentinel. I wish you well with your endeavor!
