OK, all you healthy gals and guys out there – have you been drinking enough water lately? Well, I’m sad to admit that I haven’t! Shame on me. For the past couple of weeks, I’d been slacking – only drinking 2-4 glasses each day. And you know what? I gained 3-4 pounds! No joke. I even got a zit on my chin. Not cool.
But now that I’m back on my eight glasses, my hunger level is down and I just feel so much better. The zit’s even clearing up! Makes you wonder why you ever stray from something that works, right? It’s kinda like my favorite hair conditioner – Kerastase’s Masquintense. It’s the best stuff in the world, but I always have to try the next new thing. I recently started using it again and fell in love with it all over again. I wonder why we so often mess with success?
In any case, now on to the main reason I strayed from my 8-glasses-a-day rule. See, I’ve had a PUR water filter on my kitchen faucet for awhile now. Just recently, a plumber was horrified when he replaced the faucet and saw the inside of the filter. You don’t even want to know what that thing looked like. Believe me, it hadn’t been doing much filtering for awhile. That was part of the problem you see – drinking unfiltered tap water. I don’t enjoy it. My faucet filter had needed to be replaced – AGAIN – and I hadn’t gotten around to it.
Now I don’t want to knock tap water, because I really do appreciate the stuff. I mean, living in a country that has clean drinking water is something we should never take for granted! But I really need to filter my water to be able to drink a lot of it – here in Boston, at least. So the faucet filter takes so very long to fill up my 32-oz. water bottle. I’ve been thinking of getting a pitcher filter, instead.
My initial research has shown that there are all types of water filters, from the standard charcoal type I’m familiar with to magnetic ones, UV varieties, reverse osmosis, and more. I had a Brita pitcher years ago, and I remember liking it. So tell me: what are your favorite water filters – type and brand? And why? I read that Good Housekeeping rated the PUR CR-6000 2-Stage Pitcher as the best choice because it produces “good-tasting” water and filters out more contaminants than competing brands. That’s the one I’m leaning toward right now.
What do you guys think? I’d love to hear your water-filter picks! I’ve gotta get one pronto. Hope everyone is happy, healthy, and hydrated these days. Even if you slack off here and there like I did, just get back in the habit and watch your health flourish.

I have used a PUR Pitcher with the filter cartridge for years now. I love it. I make sure when I do go buy filters, that I stock up (it is cheaper to buy multiple ones at a time anyway). I replace the filter every 3 months, when I put in a new one..I go right to the calender and flip it 3 months ahead and write it on there. I would also like to get one to put on our faucet.
Awesome, Netty! Can't wait to stop drinking right from the tap.
This is good information. We have a filter on our fridge, but I am wondering how good it really is. I was just thinking about looking for a pitcher filter.
I love the PUR. I have one on the faucet, and one in the fridge so my water is tripple filtered lol. Tastes like it came from heaven itself! And it took me a while to realize that I need to make ice cubes with the filtered water. LOL. I was wondering why it still tasted nasty!
Too funny, Pamela!
I have a Brita pitcher and I really like it. I think I'm going to get a second one, so there is always water in the fridge.
I haven't tried PUR, but have been using a Brita pitcher for years. (Not the same one.) I like it, and the water tastes good, but it's supposed to last up to three months, and I'm lucky if I can get to three weeks before the water begins tasting like tap water again. I got better results in other locations, but our water is just awful here. If something else works better, I'd try it.
Here's a tip I use... putting a squeeze of lemon, or (especially) lime juice makes the water taste "fresher" and I drink more of it. There's a product on the market called TrueLemon which is great to keep on hand for when fresh lemons aren't available. It's a dried lemon juice powder which comes in packets. It's not easy to find, but worth it if you can. You can look for locations which sell it, at their website.
Thanks for the tip, Julie! Yeah, I've heard of that stuff. I usually have to add SOMETHING to the water to encourage me to drink it!
It's a good choice for me, Melissa, and it's calorie-free and has none of those artificial sweeteners I hate, while still providing flavor. I prefer fresh lemon or lime juice, but this is easier and (I think) better than nothing.
Truelemon is awesome! I use it all the time for just that reason - I can drink water more with it. they also make True Lime and True Orange now too!
The only time I love plain water is at the gym. I spend so much time at the water fountain! Too bad we don't stay thirsty like that all day.
I live in the Midwest where farmland chemicals get in the water. My Mother was diagnosed with cancer (she survived) and the first thing she was told was to drink ONLY reverse osmosis water. That is the most purified. We purchased a system at Home Depot for around $160 (find a 10% off coupon to save more) and my husband installed the faucet at our sink and the tank goes under the sink. The replacement filters are in the $60 range but a long time. We drink tons of water for a family of 4 and got almost a year out of ours. So after the initial $160 fee we are basically paying the filter fee which amounts to a few dollars a month for purified water. Plus all we do is turn on the faucet and the water is there.
Boy this is sad! I'm glad she's better now though...
Very sad indeed, Vicky! Glad she's in remission (so is my Dad), and thanks for the helpful info.
I'm pleased to hear your Dad is ok as well. This was an interesting subject and good comments. Best wishes!
I've used a Brita Water Filter Pitcher for years I mean years! I've tried the PUR type that hooks onto the faucet but it just seems to get in my way. I guess its a matter of preferance..
I appreciate your concern. Just wanted to share about this reverse osmosis faucet because it's truly purified water and once it's installed it's nearly maintenance free and is so convenient to turn on a faucet and the water is there. I have used the PUR before and they are nice. Found some coupons for you. :) It will take you to PUR's website.
