Last Saturday, Sage celebrated her fourth birthday at a "Hungry Caterpillar" theme party. Come join the fun....and listen to a story, tye-dye a shirt, or bat a pinata.

Lena read Sage's favorite story The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle to a captive audience.

Care to blow some bubbles?

Or would you like to tye-dye a shirt?

What would a birthday party be without a pinata. Lena spent the previous week making a cacoon out of papier-mache. It was filled with butterflies, candy and small toys.

Then it was time to eat.....a Hungry Caterpillar cake, of course.....

Did you say presents? Oh yes, there were presents.....sitting on a blanket, Sage was excited about all the gifts. After opening each gift, she would spontaneously go over and hug the "giver".

And then she surprised us all when she opened her last present......

.....she just couldn't wait to put on the new bathing suit from Papa.

I guess in the end, one never knows what kind of "surprise happenings" can occur at a birthday party. I know we were all surprised.....

That look of glee permeates and is infectious! Fun!

Would you believe that when Sage was born she weighed only 2 pounds, 6 ounces. Like the Hungry Caterpillar, Sage is continuously eating....eating everything you can imagine....humus, raw oysters, clams, salad, cerery, you name it. Do you know of any research on "Premies eating habits"....cause it seems, she is constantly eating. Thank goodness, it's all good stuff.
Not off hand. She certainly is a doll!
Wow! What a party. It had everything, even a piñata. And of course leave it to Sage to try on her new bathing suit right there, on the spot and right out of the box! Heh, heh!
That's why I posted it to your group....if "you blinked" you would have missed the finale to the gift opening! She is a free spirit....one never knows what she will do next.
This is so sweet - delightful at every turn. You turned my Sunday morning grimace to a smile.
I'm glad this brought s smile to your face, Sherrie.
Elizabeth, what a wonderful photo essay of Sage's party! Happy Birthday to Sage. I'll never tell about the strip show! LOL!
It was a strip-down party, Phil that brought smiles to all our faces.
She is precious.
What a lovely photo essay - happy birthday to Sage. I love The Hungry Caterpillar!
Eric Carle is just an awesome children's author. We have most of his books.
This is a delight all the way... and true to its theme--- hungry caterpillar changes before our very eyes!
Happy birthday to Sage!
A Perfect metamorphis, Duckie
ROFL! Never a dull moment with ones about that age! A budding Gypsy Rose Lee in the making... LOL!
I wanna butterfly for my hair like one of THOSE! Waaaaah! ;o)
I will ask Lena if she has any butterflies left, Jean.
They all seem to be having an awesome time.
Happy birthday to Sage.
It was a good time. I love at-home birthday parties....so much more fun then sterile "theme" parties at Mama Mia's or Chunky Cheese. It is a lot of work, but I think the kids have a much better time interacting with each other.
it's great having a photographer in the family...sage is gonna be so mad at you when i show these pictures to her first boyfriend!
By then, I will have dementia, so I won't remember that she is mad at me.
Thanks for the smile. This was a wonderful birthday party and everyone is having so much fun. I love the activities. What a great ending, oh to be a child again. She's beautiful and her happy spirit shows through in her adorable smile.
Sage is a happy camper...you can bring her anywhere and she finds joy. The other night she was at my retirement party for a few hours and you would have thought it was her party. After Lena and Papa took her home (I was staying late), everyone complimented on her behaviour....actually some of the kindergarten teachers were putting in dibbs for her to be in their class a year from now.
OH MY It reminds me of partys I gave for my children too many years ago to use fingers and toes to gount great photo essay
Thanks Jules....an old fashion party....great games....wonderful food...happy smiles.
Happy Birthday to your little sweetness, dear Elizabeth! She's absolutely admirable! :-)
Hugs and blessings - S.
Thanks for stopping by, Svetlana....Sage is a doll.
My grandson Connor used to love Very Hungry Caterpillar. It is a great theme for a party. Great photos.
It was the perfect theme for Sage, Karen, because Sage eats through everything we have in the refrig non-stop.
bob, this is SO MUCH FUN! thanks for taking us along with her! i love the butterfly hair clips, and also the cocoon pinata - that is sooooo cool! happy birthday, sage!
Didn't Lena do a nice job making the cocoon? It was really perfect....it was sad when it "broken".
but you got great photos!! yes, it was awesome. she should make another one for your classroom! to keep and display, natch...
Great idea, jessie.
looks like it was fun
It was a barrel of fun, Lena.
hey, it's not a party til somebody gets naked...
looks like fun was had by all. that's my kind of hootenanny!
I think Sage would have been an excellent "volunteer" in 2003 when the women of Point Reyes, California bared all and spelled out "Peace" with their naked bodies to protest the Iraq War, Mona.
I love this - definitely want to have that kind of party for the kid inside of me - I love all of those caterpillars and butterflies - each picture is soooo full of life and fun...thanks for sharing Bob - good times. Salud
I love the pinata too - how did she make it???? Salud
Lena used newspaper, a balloon, paper mache paste, and white crepe paper streamers. It took several days to dry. I think she bought the butterflies from Michael's Craft store. Last summer she made a mermaid pinata for Julia's birthday. Lena is quite crafty when it comes to decorations. Hell, she's good at every thing she tackles.
OK...I have to go back to weeding. Every once in a while I take a break. The sun is HOT outside. Gotta drink that lemon water.
Wow, what a party! I bet she will remember that one forever. Special moments!
I love home parties like this, Alison. I know they are more work...but the kids do have a lot of "old fashion fun".
Happy Birthday Sage! What a great party.I looks like Sage and the rest of the guests had a lot of fun.
Sage had a wonderful time, Marge....the thoroughly enjoyed all the activities.
The expressions on the little ones' faces are priceless ... and Sage just getting her gear off to try on her new bathing suit is delightful - she personifies innocence.
She is a riot, Mag. She was just over here with Julia swimming.
oh joy joy joy!
She is a child after my own heart!
As she is of mine....no wonder we like hanging out together.
Ha! That looks like a great birthday party!
It was an awesome party. Thanks for coming by.
The title should be "Now I am Fourteen!" That girl cracks me up, she is WAY wise beyond her years. Everyone had such a nice time at the Hungry Caterpillar Party. Lena is such a crafty person :) I felt kinda sad when the kids ripped her pinata open, it was so neat!
I was wondering when you were going to stop by.......hey, why doesn't Cam have a butterfly in his hair?
Cam only wears HIS butterflies in Private! hee hee...shhhh...don't tell.
Heard you had a nice party the other day, glad I didn't have to come bail you guys out.......
Can I say ADORABLE? What a precious child! So spontaneous and natural.....I hope she never outgrows it...except the strip teasing in public, of course!
Nana won't allow a strip dancer in her family. Lol
;-) That was just too cute!
Bob, I have a question for you....was it you who published a photo essay about taking a grandaughter to the Nutcraker Ballet a couple of years ago? I've had that essay on my mind for months and was wondering who it was that had shared it here.
What a delight this has been seeing her in action, and the child does not believe in wasting time! Makes me think she definitely loved that bathing suit. To be that carefree....
Happy Birthday Sage.
You all put on quite a party for children. I hope they remember it for a very long time.
What a beautiful, smile-provoking photo essay bob!! Sage looks so incredibly happy, especially about that swimsuit ;-)
Lena did a wonderful job on that pinata! I remember the Hungry Catepillar story well, when I was doing a nanny job, it was one of the favorite stories of the youngest child in the family.
A belated Happy Birthday to Miss Sage ;-)
