How many folks in North America feel that the burqas, niqabs, hijabs, and other garmets worn by Muslim women to cover their heads and faces are oppressive? Huge debates are raging around these garmets. Some choose to wear them for their own reasons, some are forced by their families, and others live in countries where it is illegal not to wear these garmets.
Have you ever stopped to think that North Americans and other similar cultures that force a woman to cover her breasts do the same as those cultures that force a woman to cover her face? That which is covered has become overly sexualized in its respective society. There are countries in the world where it is quite acceptable for a woman to go without a top in public.
It's getting warmer here in Canada. There is no denying that summer is well on its way.
Today I was wondering about something.
Why, in many parts of the world, is it acceptable for a man to go topless, but not for a woman? Think about it!
Our breasts were made to nourish children. It is not our problem if they have become overly sexualized. Men have nipples too, and can go topless. Why must women in most places cover up?
Think of the skimpiest of women's baithing suits. Strong bikinis where nothing is covered except for the nipple, yet flat-chested men go completely exposed. That which makes our chests different (the size of the breast) in the skimpiest suits, is left exposed, yet that which is the same (the nipple) is covered in one gender, but not in the other.
I have seen some larger guys walking along the beaches who probably need a bra more than most women, yet they can walk around topless, while women are expected to cover up.
In the Summer of 1991 right here in my hometown of Guelph Ontario, University student Gwen Jacobs decided to remove her top and her bra, and talk a walk through downtown Guelph (probably right past the apartment building where my husband and I are now living). She was initially charged with indecent expsure and arrested, but was fully aquitted in 1996, after a law was past citing gender descrimination. After all as I said above, men have nipples too. Why aren't they forced to cover them?
Either women should be allowed to go uncovered, or men need to cover up now!!!
Because of this double standard women often have a hard time breastfeeding their babies in public locations. Some are banished to stuffy restrooms to nourish their young. Isn't the defining characteristic of a MAMMAL, that we have BREASTS that PRODUCE MILK, so that we may NOURISH OUR YOUNG with OUR OWN BODIES?
So why is it that women are still so opressed that we must keep our breasts covered at all times? When i was in Denmark it was great! Just leave the clothes on the beach, and jump into the ocean! No one gave anyone a second look, because there were topless or nude people everywhere on the beach. Yeah, whatever. Who cares? Go swimming and have fun. Try that in this country outside of a nudist colony, and get arrested.
What do you think?
