A Washington DC couple was arrested for spying for Cuba for over 30 years. The husband was a State Department worker who retired in 2007 and had viewed hundreds of classified reports on Cuba, information he passed on to Castro.
I guess I'm not really surprised that we have spies in our government or that they could be spying for decades before being caught. Given how bad our intelligence services have been for quite awhile, it really isn't surprising that they wouldn't notice a spy. However, there is one thing I am surprised about...
WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU RISK YOUR LIFE SPYING FOR CUBA?!! Seriously, why not spy for a country that matters? If you're going to commit treason and risk serious consequences, don't you think Russia, China, North Korea, Iran or at least some nuclear power like India or Pakistan would be a good choice? Risking all that to spy for Cuba is about on par with risking all that to spy on behalf of the Vatican.
Sure Cuba is one of "the bad guys", but since the Cuban Missile Crisis - Cuba is more of a political enemy than one of serious threat. What's Castro gonna do? Catapult 50s era Chevy sedans at Florida? About the worst he can do is invade us with thousands of Cubans - but how would that be any different than the thousands of Cubans already washing up in Florida?
What's next, are we going to bust the Lesotho spy ring? Maybe we'll catch whoever is spying for Nepal. Cuban spies. Heck, that wasn't even cool when this kook started doing it 30 years ago. Now, 40 years ago - then you've got something. But, starting at the end of the disco era? Why?
I suppose Castro paid them well. Cigars, vintage cars, cigars, rum, cigars and maybe some cigars would seem likely pay-offs. Maybe coconuts. Do they have coconuts in Cuba or just cuckoo nuts?
Cuba? Are you kidding me?
