We are home now- boy was it a hard day. Not only was it the last day of school, but the last school day for the building they were in. Next year, it will be turned into a pre-school & day care. The school currently runs before & afterschool daycare in all sorts of buildings, and they rent a building in town to run pre-school, and the all-day day care kids.
Now they will have all of it in one building, saving them money in the long run, and allowing them to have more kids for both pre-school and day care, which earns them money.
For the end of the day, the teachers set up two bubble machines at the exit doors, and had music playing. The teachers all lined up outside, so the kids could walk through, and say good bye to everyone.
Gilly is so upset. She's scared she'll never see her friends again, or her teacher. I had her pose with her teacher for a photo, which I will get printed up, and frame for her.
One of the mom's brought in a photo, frame, and mat. She had all the kids sign the mat when Mr. E wasn't in there, and then she brought it in at the end of the day to present to him, so he'll always have it.
I did some class room work, to prepare it for the move, and to help Mr. E out, then afterwards, I stuffed more folders for the kids. I passed those out, plus I gave each of the kids a Tootsie Pop from me.
I got to sign autographes in year books, t-shirts, and hats- yesterday, the PTO presented all the kids with their own hat, frisbee, and pencil with the school name, and the years of operation printed on them. It was their gift to the kids with the last of the PTO money.
The PTO was offered two choices- spend the money, or pass it on equally to the other schools. They felt that since these kids worked hard to earn it, they should get to spend it on something for everyone, which I thought was nice. They talked about a school wide field trip, but the zoo was just way too expensive.
I got one last gift in the form of some left over certificates for free kids meals for Applebees from Mr. E towards the end of the day. They expire at the end of June, so he wouldn't have been able to hold on to them anyway, and he has no kids of his own. He had 3 left, so we can take all 3 kids out to eat cheaply.
Applebee's has a deal right now, too- 2 meals and an appetizer for $20. So, if we do that, plus our drinks, all 5 of us could eat for under $30. Not bad!
I thought about doing it up in Mackinaw City, but I think it'll be a nice treat for us here at home.
Oh! Mr. E will be up on Mackinac Island the same week we will. He's going next Friday, and will be there through at least Monday. I told him Monday was when we'd be on the island, and he and his wife, plus her family will all be around on that day. Maybe we'll see him when we're up there.
Thoughts- I'm glad school is out, but sad that the building is shutting down, sad that Gilly was so sad (she almost had me in tears- her little heart was just breaking...), and not excited over the prospect of a long summer of fighting kids. ;)
Anyway... that was my morning.

It sounds like quite a day already Heather. Roshane was both sad and happy yesterday, but mostly he was happy because he things he will spend every day on the beach:)
How far will the kids' new school be from your house? Is it still in walking distance?
Chris will be at the middle school with Rae, which is walking distance. Gilly's a little over 2 miles away, so she'll be bused starting next year. If I can get her to finally be able to ride a 2 wheeler, we might bike to school during the warmer months. It'll be good for me and her.
Yesterday was my last day at school. I am so looking forward to the summer. Sleeping late, reading some good books, going on vacation and not thinking about school.
I am looking forward to the sleeping in aspect. ;)
It sounds like it will be a memorable day for all of you.
That will be a difficult adjustment for the kids, but hopefully they will find it exciting too.
I've done the $20 deal at Applebee's. Not bad!
We've done the $20 twice now, but both times were when we didn't have the kids with us. It's a great deal, though, for eating out. I think since Nick works late tonight, maybe we'll do it tomorrow. :)
What's your favorite appetizer? I'm always torn between boneless buffalo wings and spinach artichoke dip. I wish we could do 2 appetizers and one entree!
I can still remember that overwhelming excitement and sense of loss on the the last day of school. I am sure that it would be even harder, knowing that the building is changing so.
Think positive....the summer is a great time for your kids to bond. Yeah, right!
Reminds me of when I finished up with Westwood. The school didn't close, but I would be getting a lot of new teachers. That was grade 6, in 1993. When in June of 1996 I fishend up with Willow Road (grade 7-8), and a couple of years later the building turned into a second building for the elementary school next door. A lot of the teachers stayed to teach younger grades. Mom's a supply teacher there, and sees a lot of my old teachers.
When I lived in that part of town, I'd go back and visit my teachers after school now and then. I'm sure you'll find a way to keep the kids in touch with the teachers they really liked.
wow what a long day you had.. my two oldest last day is the 11th ..then the twins is the 10th
My daughter is out for the summer too. She is playing video games in the movie room with a friend. He's a boy, he's a friend, but he's not a boyfriend. :)
It sounds like a great last day of school for the kids. I'm glad school is done..but by the time the summer vacation is over, everyone is ready for them to go back.
Wow sounds like a long day. I am sure the kids will have a great summer vaction.
My boys have been out of school a week now and both have summer jobs. They got lucky.
Wow, long day.
Sounds like a busy day
I am glad school is out. My son's wont be until next wednesday. I can't wait too. He will start a karate class in the evenings.
It sounds like a fun last day at the school. Enjoy sleeping in now!
Wow, my son has been out of school a month now...he was out May 7th. We only have 6 weeks left I think...
I will begin on the whole school thing in August. Maddie will begin kindergarten. I am 38 this month. I am thinking how old I will be when they graduate highschool. Oh my, I better not think about it right now.
You guys are lucky - we have 4 days to go yet.
