Daily Whine & Shine - Friday, June 5, 2009
by Marilyn Mackenzie
Whether you agree with the concept or not, everyone needs to be able to vent from time to time. That's especially true if you're one of the many who suffer from an invisible illness. We have whines and rants about pains, medical professionals and prescriptions, just to name a few. Perhaps our families listen; perhaps they don't. Even if they do, they get tired of our complaining, even if they claim to understand our struggles. Or if they don't get tired of our "negative energy" we think they do or will.
Do you need to rant about something? Tell us about it.
Do you have some celebration or victory you need to share? This is the place.
What's happening in your world today? Are you grumpy about somiething? Or so angry you could spit? Tell it here. Here at the Daily Whine & Shine, it's acceptable to rant, vent, complain, stomp your feet, throw a tantrum, and shout, "Oh shuckie darn!"
Wait! Don't go away! Do you have some good news to share? Great. This is the place for that as well. If you're celebrating, dancing, and yelling, "Yippee Skippy!" please share. Sometimes knowing about someone else's happiness gives us a bit of hope for ourselves.
Whether you're shouting, "Oh shuckie darn!" or yelling, "Yippee skippy!" - this is the place to be. Pulll up a rocking chair, and let's talk about it.
Now, let's celebrate!!!

Happy Friday! Happy National Doughnut Day and World Environment Day!
I can't believe it's Friday again. Wasn't it Friday a few days ago? I hate how fast the weeks go as you get older.
Good afternoon Marilyn, Pittsburgh is chilly today but no one minds because the Pens won last night! ; ) Have a nice weekend now.
Hi Janet! We had our chilly yesterday. I think the night before it got down to 49 degrees and only got up to about 60 yesterday. Today is more normal - in the 70s.
Hmmm, I wasn't aware, but it is the first anniversary of last Friday already. They came so close together.
Now if only I could afford one I would say, Hooray for National Steakhouse Month
I'm off from work today, taking my next to last vacation day until I get more in September.... dog sitting for my daughter so she could take a mini vacation down to the outer banks of NC..... it's kinda like "you went to hawaii and all i got was this crummy t shirt" slogan
I am in PAIN today Marilyn!! All over it hurts :-( I haven't had this problem in sooo long, so its shocking. Ugh, I am so tired from it, my muscles just do not want to work today. Plus all week I have been in a serious fibro fog. I just had to mention it to my team lead because I keep trying to ask a question but I cannot find the correct way to ask it so its clear. Been doing that all flipping week. So glad she's in a patient mood lol. How are YOU doing?
I hear you on how fast the weeks go. I am happy its Friday, but WOW, they do go fast. Too fast, which is why I love Mondays because on that day it feels like it will last forever :-)
Hi Pamela. I'm sorry you're hurting and having fibro fog. You know I understand both. I was reading a women's health bulletin today, and it said that using acetaminophen can lead to memory loss because it zaps the glutathione we need in our brains to keep them "razor sharp". I don't use any anti-inflammatories myself because they make me sick at the stomach, but I know lots of fibro folks do. The report said that N-acetylcysteine or NAC, helps raise the gluthathione and prevents the inflammation that triggeers memory lapses. Might be worth checking the health food stores for. The report also said that eating nuts and seeds helps memory too, and the fats in them actually help burn calories faster in women. Another thing worth checking into, I guess. :)
BEING SICK SUKZ!!!
I've been on "work from home" (via this little machine) since Monday afternoon. Sore throat, hot chest, sinuses plugged, headache... you know the drill. Yesterday afternoon I felt good enough to help th' Luvly Laura spend $200.00 (hers) on flowers and plants (which I'll have to care for). Came home, sat down and... blooie! Suddenly and terribly the whole thing turned into what we commonly call "intestinal" flu. THAT lasted 'til about noon, and now I'm back to just feelin' lousy again.
I'm so sorry, Chuck. You're right. Being sick is no fun.
Happy Doughnut Day to all. Krispy Kreme was (maybe still is) giving away a free doughnut and Dunkin Donuts was giving away a doughnut with a drink purchase. Run, don't walk to your nearest location.
Thanks, David. I'll pass a Dunkin' Donuts on my way back from the bank in a little while. Might have to check that out. I don't often buy donuts, but freebies are fun.
Ooh, didn't know it was national fishing week!! How cool, gotta tell hubby.
Oh, I wish I could afford to get to the Dunkin Donuts, David, but they are one hour from us. I love doughnuts! YUM
Whine: Still broke...not much going to change until the end of the month, but every day it brings me down to think that I can't afford to put groceries in our kitchen or gas in the car. Now, if we can just afford the school books for my husbands last class that we HAVE to purchase next week - urgh! Also, my husband had to reapply for his job (along with all the other employees) he got his job, but not the same one he had before. He is now a Rover which means he will have to move from cottage to cottage to fill in gaps in staff and not be able to work the same place all the time. Also he is still on second shift except one day - so he will have to work until around midnight one night and then be back into work the next day first thing in the morning. Yuck!
Shine: The church that said they would help with gas said that they would put $25 in our tank today, so I raced in and they put the gas in. They told me that this is the last time they can help us for the year, but even so - they've helped a lot and we don't attend there. They are also sending a check to our landlord for $150.00 to help with our past due utility balance of $780.00. That is such a huge help! So overall they have been very helpful to us :) I am really hoping that our next pay check will be enough to pay everything that I have to pay!
Cyndi, I'm glad the church came through for you. Have you tried others in the area? I know when I worked as church secretary, all the churches in our area had programs to help people, and they usually were not members. In the years I worked, our church gave out about $40,000 per year for utility, gas for cars (to get to doc appointments or work), and rent payments. We also had our own food pantry which was open during times when the community food pantry was not open. The Salvation Army and about 7 or 8 other churches nearby had the same kinds of programs, and often families had to go to more than one to get the help they needed.
I've been checking around...Our area is not the easiest for finding help. When my husband and I lived in Maine we worked seasonaly and the help was there for us from many churches. One paid almost $1,000 to fix my car so I could look for work, another paid our rent for a few months. Here I've asked one church for help, but they only help once...ever. I thought it would be like once a month or once a year, but nope. Our church where we attend won't help us unless we take a weekend, find a baby sitter and go to a retreat for new converts - even though we've been attending church and christians for years! The salvation army here helps once a year and they helped us with gas once to get my husband to his surgery, so we can't go there again. There are two food banks in the area and they provide enough food for 3 days but you can't go back for at least 2 weeks. Our pregnancy center doesn't help with much for toddlers, so I can't get diapers or clothes to fit him. I've tried so many things that I just don't know where else to turn until we finally get my husbands money from college. We've cut everything there is to cut, but yet we still can't make it and are over income for food stamps. I know there must be so many people in our same situation and some even worse...it just really stinks!
Can I whine about June being the "Student Safety Month"
Really now, that month should be August or September when school starts! Not a month when half the kids are already on summer vacation.
Actually I want to whine for shine.
Today is again cold, cloudy, and rainy.
I need some sunshine! :-)
That's a good whine - about the Student Safety Month. Makes sense to me. :)
Sorry you're having cold, cloudy weather. We had lots of that recently too. Today it's finally warm and sunny. Yippee skippy!!!
I got a note that you had viewed all my photos. Thanks!!!
I'm having surgery on Tuesday. Surgery sucks, and the fact that it was supposed to be done in February doesn't thrill me either. However, finally getting my SOD fixed is a good thing.
Happy Friday! :) Have a fun weekend!
Donuts yum
Hola, Marilyn! Natalie passed all of her classes and she won't have to go to summer school!!! Whoooo Hoooo!!
My woes are many. GM's bankrutpcy is taking away a large part of our insurance benefits. This is on top of costing us $150,000 in lost stock. We saved, invested, and paid union dues, had great plans and now we're broke and under-insured.
On the bright side, we have a roof over our heads, food, a beautiful place to live and every morning I wake up next to the love of my life. Can't put a price on that... although I'm sure if the legislators could, they'd tax it.
