Yesterday I was bored a little and decided to take a mirror outside and try to get a reflection to post on Photo Art's Monthly Competition. It was a cloudy day and I ventured out into my yard with camera and mirror in hand. I tried setting up the mirror by different flowers and snap pictures to try and get a good shot. All pictures were take with a Sony DSC-H50 set on Auto mode.
First I tried with a Rose, but I just couldn't get the angle I wanted, although I thought the first try wasn't too bad. I took this on a auto setting and zoomed in on it.

Then I went to the iris, but they were starting to die off and I couldn't get the effect that I wanted to with them. Also set on Auto with a zoom. I was trying not to let the mirror pick up my image.

The third try was some peonies. I laid the mirror on the ground and took a shot of some peonies that were hanging down. Close to what I wanted but not quite yet. It was a little dark and I wasn't sure if I liked the placement of the frame.

So I moved the frame around till it was on the diagonal, stepped back a little more to let more light from the cloudy sky in and got the shot I wanted. But I still felt it could be even better.

I opened it up in picnik editing program and added an HD filter. This is one of picnik's creative filters. It is a minor change from some edits but I thought it just gave it a little more clarity. This is the final mirror reflection.

I am just learning photography and editing. But I know that you need to take many shots and also don't be afraid to try new things. Especially with digital you can try many things and then just keep the ones that come out the best. There is no waste of money or film. I hope you enjoyed the essay and it will be of some help to the newbies in photography.

Wow, what a neat essay Carol! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.....I am very new to taking photos and don't have a clue how to do a lot of things. I have not attempted to edit any photos yet......I did go to Picnik and register but have not played around with it yet.......I just love your photos and I agree, the last one is terrific!
Thanks Sandra, I think that you are doing great with your photos. I am learning also and hope that more of the great photographers here on gather share their know how with us all. You can never learn too much.
Great Essay Carol.
Thanks for sharing
I like the last one best.
I think they're all kind of cool. Very creative!
Those were pretty creative photos. I liked the idea of using a mirror.
I like all of these, what a clever idea. Digital cameras do offer a lot of possibilities and it is fun experimenting. I have only tried a few editing and alterations but I'm afraid I'm not very creative. I need a lot more practice and ideas. I like what you did with each of these.
Great photo essay Carol! I also need to get more creative with my photography. I'm glad to see you playing with picnik.com. The filter you used really did add lots of clairity to the last photo.
Thank you for posting your photo essay at Pretty Pictures.
This is great. I, too, am just starting and don't even understand my camera yet. It is just a tiny thing, but it can do some stuff I need to learn.
This was neat - I am a beginner at the photo editing too
What gorgeous mirror images! Very creative.

Carol - that is so cool. What a clever idea. I really liked the Iris the best. So far I haven't tried the HD filter, so thanks for the tip.
It should be fun to see what everyone contributes for this challenge. I'm new to photo editing myself and I love playing with picnik.com
