Searchers began retrieving the first pieces of wreckage officials say appears to have come from Air France Flight 447 that disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean.
Officials said the debris will be examined for serial numbers and other markings to confirm it is the jetliner that vanished after departing Rio de Janeiro for Paris, Voice of America reported. The Airbus A330-200 was carrying 216 passengers and 12 crew members when it went disappeared from radar Monday.
"The nature of the debris, the density, the position, make no doubt that we have the first material evidence that are linked to Air France 447," French military spokesman Christophe Prazuck said.
Brazilian Air Force planes spotted an oil slick and four debris fields Wednesday, but rough weather and seas prevented a salvage mission, CNN reported.

I wonder what exactly happened...
I read something about their airspeed not being fast enough for flying through a thunderstorm. From that info I wonder if the plane was caught in a microblast that slammed it into the ocean.
I hope they are able to retrieve the black boxes so that they are better able to understand what happened. I know that it is probably not possible to find any survivors and my prayers go out to those families, but if they can find out a why maybe they can prevent another plane from those circumstances.
I hope they are able to retrive the black boxes to find out what really happened
That was scary. My daughter flew to Italy just the day before.
