I'd heard months ago that in this new production, the Puerto Ricans were actually going to speak in Spanish, so I HAD to go. This was the one production I'd pressured the school into buying tickets for.
As expected, I knew all the words to all the songs and mouthed them throughout the play - no I didn't sing out loud.
Since this is one movie I'd seen repeatedly, I knew what was coming and looked foreward to seeing how they'd stage the sequence.
There was actually very little Spanish - two songs were translated and every so often there'd be a phrase or two - and then it was often said in English.
It was fun, and I am glad I went... BUT...
Tony was wimpy - not the strong voice I expected; and Riff pronounced his words a little TOO clearly - he's a first generation New Yorker and a kid from the streets, that clear enunciation should've been toned down a bit.
I am still glad I saw it... now to find the video and watch THAT.

I'd love to see it, as I have seen the movie so often I think I know the entire dialogue! How was Maria? I just can't picture any other Maria than Natalie Wood! Now I have to go pull out my WSS video to watch today while I iron!
Maria was OK. I spent much of my time during the play comparing it with the movie - so probably didn't enjoy it as much as I would have otherwise.
PS I WOULD have sung the songs out loud!
I would have sung the songs too! Maybe thats what you were hearing!
