Do you know whats the reason why people drink or smoke?
I have observed that there are some people who are very poor. They could not even afford to have decent food to eat, but then how is it they could still afford to buy a cigarette or even alcoholic drinks for themselves?
Insted of saving their money to buy food they would still prefer those things which i think are not good for the health.

They'll also be the first to buy lottery tickest.
for the alcohol I would say because that is their escape from reality. Smokes they are addicted and don';t have the will power to stop.
tis the nature of the beast called 'mankind'......
My husband of 20 yrs took up cigar smokig 2 yrs ago. Never ever smoked anything!
To me its nasty and disgusting. He doesnt get many kisses anymore, but I guess thats ok with him cause he still does it. Me being a non smoker makes it that much more worse on my nose.
I ask him why at this stage in his life he took up the nasty habit. He says "Because I can."
Wow ,that mature right? lol!
They are addictions, all of them. Drinking, smoking and gambling, none of which I do, but can somewhat understand those who need to. Their body craves it?
It's because we ARE poor that we drink and smoke... and whatever... They're all painkillers and the pain of poverty is overwhelming...
Very simple: ADDICTION!
Yes, it's addiction and it's also a "vice". We all need our vices for stress relief. For some, including me, smoking and having the occasional drink provides relief from everyday stress.
same here!
I don't know the answer to that question. It's one many have asked.
I think you got a lot of good answers.
There are many reasons people make this choice. It can be social reasons; a mean of escape from reality; an addiction; they enjoy it; etc.
I don't know, I don't do either on.
I don't know, I don't do either on.
I am a non-smoker, non-drinker who used to drink socially (20 years ago) and smoked marijuana for some 15 years before quitting more than 15 years ago.
As my son was growing up he observed that, although his father didn't drink, it seemed that ALL other adults did. He could not believe that I was actually that different from everyone else. He watched me like a hawk, sure he would catch me drinking clandestinely. When it finally became clear to him that I was telling the truth and did not drink, he let it go.
My point? There is tremendous social pressure to drink in our society. Amongst youth there is also a lot of social pressure to smoke (though less now than there used to be, thank God). Both are seen as a rite of passage into adulthood.
As children, especially in years past, so very many smoked and drank. It was advertised, and promoted as culturally sophiticated, and sheek. Actually, much was advertised, as being healthy, and a way to relax. A well deserved treat, after a hard day of honest work, and sacrifice of your time, and talent.
The children saw this as a rite of passage into adulthood, and were provided this, as a prime expample of mature, adult behaviour. By the time any word came out as to it being deleterious to ones health, the fix was in. These were addictive substances.
