Being a bird owner, I was super psyched to experience this new interactive habitat at Zoo Atlanta when I visited with Kat W today. We spent a good deal of time at this attraction too and I think I shot over 100 photos here alone.

Visitors basically are let into the habitat in groups. Once inside you are told the rules about interacting with the birds and all the dos and don'ts. Feed sticks are available for purchase, but since we were shooting photos, we didn't buy any.

Holding the stick out to the birds attracts them to you.

These parakeets were so cute and fun to watch. I really enjoyed myself at this part of the zoo and think it's a great new addition.

For the most part the birds seem rather at ease with people and I think will become even more so the longer the exhibit is in place.

The first bird I ever owned was a male albino parakeet named Tweep. He was quite a character and had a vocabulary of about 25 words and phrases. He died after 8 years. My parrot, Gonzo, still calls him by name from time to time, even all these years later. Because Tweep was such an awesome little bird, this species holds a special place in my heart.

This is definitely a must hit stop while visiting Zoo Atlanta. The experience is fun and entertaining. It's well worth the wait to get inside the aviary.

Thanks for visiting A Parakeet Adventure with me. Hope you enjoyed the photos of these cute and animated birds.

Here, birdie, birdie. The light blue one reminds me of my first 4 budgies...all called Tinkerbell. (They kept dying and my mother would go out and buy another that looked just like it so I wouldn't know the difference.)
How very neat Marianne....they were working on the exhibit the last time I was there...I'm still not sure the price of admission is worth it though....
It's included in the Zoo ticket price. There was no extra fee.
You got some wonderful shots!
What a delightful photo essay! The pictures are just spectacular! I am going to go view them all and get a better look!
What a wonderful place to visit. Your pictures of the parakeets are fantastic. I felt like I was right in the room with them.
What kind of bird do you have Marianne? My Mom gave us a Cockatoo on Easter, well she gave it to us two months prior but since we were going to FL for a week I waited to get her till we got back. The little witch has bit me twice and drew blood both times. They hurts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seems I remember you posting something about your bird before I just cannot remember what kind of bird you have.
I have a Mexican Double Yellow Head (Amazon Parrot). He's only really bitten me once and it was when I had to take him to the vet to have his beak sanded. This was probably a good 13 years ago. He was very angry with me after that. He's pinched me hard a few times over the years when I pick him up and he doesn't want me to, but he knows who feeds him and is a good boy most of the time. He was a domestic hand-fed baby and is relatively nice to everyone except men. He will attack men if given the opportunity. He's gotten my roommate a few times.
My Mom did not do much with her at her house. I think my Mom rescued her from a situation. She was fine with me at my Moms but since I have brought her home, she does not seem to like me and this made me so sad. I wanted her to be MY pet and she doesn't like me.
She may come around. Remember she's been removed from her environment and it takes them awhile to adjust. I'd work on gaining her trust through the cage first... like scratching the head and giving treats and toys. Also some of these exotics are really one person loyal. So if she's had multiple owners, she may be still missing her first owner. they have incredible memories.
A super photo essay ,Marianne . I raised these things at one time. I love the color of the budgie in the last shot,so pretty.
Great pictures Marianne! The zoo in Tyler, Texas has a similar exhibit, they also have some parrot's inside, but not allowed to feed them. Of course you can buy the feed sticks for the smaller birds though. I have a picture with one on my hand - they are very cute.
that would be a lot more relaxing to be in that room instead of a room of lories LOL, keets are so much more calmer. Did they flock all over you? like the lories do you can end up with 5 or 6 of the lories fighting over you and sometimes your the one that gets bit
This is a brand new exhibit. It's only been open 2 months (if that long). I was talking to one of the keepers and there are a few keets that are exceptionaly friendly. I think by this time next year once the birds really learn this feeding behavior, it will be more like that. They were buzzing by our heads pretty regularly though.
Oh and that last bird shot what a pretty bird, ive never seen one with such a pretty pattern
This really was a fun exhibit. I like that they have the pair of ducks and Quail in the aviary with the parakeets. You got some great shots!
Thank you for posting your photo essy at Pretty Pictures.
I left them out since I was focusing on the parakeets. I have a nice video of the quail that I'll probably post at some point this weekend.
I used to have a budgie. His name was Bucko.
Your photos are wonderful, by the way.
Awww...they're so cute!
You got some wonderful shots of them. They are such a beautiful bird.
A LOT OF PRETTY BIRDS..
I enjoyed your photos very much. Luv the parakeets. They are wonderful pets. Easy keepers.
Great photos, Marianne!
Great photos! Lots of pretty colors!
Hey Marianne, Just didn't want you to miss that I've featured both yours and Kat's Zoo Atlanta posts as Gather Picks!
Thanks! I would have missed it. I haven't used the explore tab in over a month. My connection feeds keep me busy enough, lol.
Wonderful Photo Essay
I didn't even know this exhibit was there; it's been years since we've been. When we go this summer, my daughter will love this!
How neat! The Newport Aquarium has a very small aviary with lorikeets, and you can buy a cup of nectar for $1. I had to hold it, but my son (he's 2 1/2) just thought it was the neatest thing to watch the birds land on my hand.
that would be a very cool way to interact at the zoo. I love parakeets... had 10 at one point... most of them with silly matching names.... like Blueberry and Muffin and Patches and Cream
These are all so pretty, what a great idea for a zoo. When I was growing up everyone had at least one parakeet for a pet. Beautiful photos!
Thanks so much for posting to my group.
Beautiful photo essay. They're so pretty
I'll definitely go see this exhibit! We lost our parakeet, Tutti Frutti, during Hurricane Katrina.
I love them all, so beautiful, every one of them. You bet the zoo and the botanical garden are the first two things I do if I ever visit Atlanta.
Great essay, Marianne - excellent shots. I'd be a bit scared to feed them, but I'd watch.
Cute birds, and beautiful pictures!
they have so many pretty colors!
they say to tell if they are young, they would have more 'stripes' near their nose.....
I love watching them eat!!! All are beautiful especially the yellow birds...they are the prettiest! LOL
What gorgeous photos! When I went to Canada in 2007, there was an attraction, I think it was called Bird Kingdom. I simply had to go, and so glad I did! They had all kinds of birds, big MacCaws, little ones like you posted above, and all types in between. In most of the areas, especially the big bird areas, the birds were free to fly around, land, go wherever they wanted. They did have a small enclosure for the parakeets, I didn't go in (birds in force like that kinda scare me lol, I know I can face a charging bull but a little birdy makes me break out in sweats lol). It was stunning... of course I didn't own a camera at that time, but I would love to go back there! So glad you had such a great time!
That is neat that you can feed them. I really like the blue and white ones.
What a cool place. I've been wanting to take my nieces to Atlanta to see the pandas. They would love this, too. The birds, though, might not enjoy that visit too much. LOL
brave lil parkets such pretty colors
wonderful photo essay! they are so cute!
Great photos of the birds
what a great exhibit. beautiful birds
