Dh, zack and i were outside when we saw a huge snake in zacks sandbox. While dh was shooing it out of our yard i tried to get some pics but most of them blurred. We think its either a black snake or a corn snake. Though this one was huge and mean. He was black with a white belly and white markings. He also had a white tongue and struck out at my dh a few times:(

UGH gross! I wonder if the snake has a nest in your sandbox. For your sake I hope not.
You can keep that!
I agree with Desiree T. ~ better have someone check that out.
dh looked it up and found its a black rat snake or sometimes called a milk snake. I will def. have dh look thru the sandbox. He won't kill it but he got it out of the yard. However i have no issues killing it (i was holding zack or i would have then) Even though its not poisonous that one was very mean, and i could see zack tripping over it and getting bit, so i wont take any chances should i see it again
I am glad you didn't kill it, I would have called Animal Control they will catch it and release it outside of town.
My hubby think's it's a cotton mought, becareful !! =(
I would be careful, although cotton mouth snakes are not 'known' to be as far north as MD, it definitely, if mean has the characteristics of being a cotton mouth snake.
its a black rat snake non poisonus, i bet if it is a female the sand box would be a place she would lay her eggs.
that was our first thought but it didnt look 100% like one, it looks just like a rat snake or sometimes called a milk snake. The thing that got us was its tale made the rattle sound. But we don't have rattle snakes around here. And like i said it was mean it curled up and lashed out at my dh when he walked by it, then it struck out at him 3 times biting his shoe when he was trying to get it out of the yard. It kept curling up and standing up to strike. It also had a mean hiss.
that doesn't sound like a rat/milk snake, because everything I read said they would typically be non aggressive, and run when you approached them. There is a rattlesnake that is in MD, if you still live in MD, and thats a timber rattlesnake,
I didn't know that we had rattlesnakes around here:( I will need to look into that. The snake was a good 4-5ft long and im guessing it was so mean because it had a nest nearby.
We do think it was a female with eggs or a nest nearby because of how mean it was
Scary!
Thanks for your help
I hate snakes...I've had a couple in my yard too.
Snakes aren't typically aggressive, unless provoked. It's very likely that there is a nest! Do you have a local reptile rescue group? If so, they may come remove it for free.
At least dh was home to help shooo it away - 10
Eeks, even if it isn't poisoness you you could still get lock jaw from a bite so be careful! HH
wow that must have been startling to see!
OMG, you wouldn't be able to find me anywhere near home for weeks if we found a snake like that in the yard! Call animal control and have them poke around, in case there is a nest, as Tammy said.
ohhhhhh, thats a big sneak
PN 6/5
We live in a very wooded area so snakes are part of our life but this one was the biggest i have seen and by far the meanest. Most snakes slither off scared when they see us, this one wanted to attack. I had dh look all over the yard and he put down snake repellent. So we shall see if it works:(
OH what fun....NOT ~~hh
Better your yard than mine!
I hope you are able to get rid of it whatever kind of snake it is!
I ran over a snake with a lawn mover one time, it chopped it up into four pieces!
Wow!
Lots of excitement all in your backyard. I like that dh didn't automatically kill. Shows a respect for life.
extending a Helping Hand
That was much larger than the snake we found in our back yard last week. It was a garter snake but it scared us pretty good.
ewew, better you than me
oh wow
for got HH
OH I would be dead...I would have died of heart failure, I am scared to death of snakes, any kind, any color!
Thanks for my video comments!
i hate, hate, hate snakes!!
i husband would have tried to keep it but since i hate snakes that would never happen HH
I saw a big black and yellow one in my yard just the other day. My kitty cat thought it would be fun to chase it.
Hatge to tell you this, but you do have them around there. MD does from time to time have Timber Rattlesnakes, although they are more frequent just south of you, they do get that far on occations. And that looks like one, and would explain the "Rattle" sound. Although Milk Snakes (red, yellow and black), hog nosed, and Bullsnakes can do that in dry grass.
I think I got snakes in my yard, but I have never seen one, would scare me really bad. I see several round holes dug in the ground, which makes me think there are snakes. I get weak just thinking about it.
YIKES!
Stopping by from Points Nation
Why didn't you kill it? Are you sure that backyard is now safe for Zack to play?
That is very scary that it was in his sandbox!

I'd call Animal Control, with a little in the family you need to be sure it doesn't have a nest close by! I'm Surfing Gather, dropping by from Points Nation! ;-)
I would be concerned too! Most snakes are not aggressive.
~PN~
I stepped on a huge black snake once by accident -- we were both so scared of each other we didn't know what to do next! PN
we have a black snake that lives under our front porch. I call him Blacky
points nation
ewwww yuck. I hate snakes. I'm not really afraid of them, but I certainly don't want them in my yard!
PN
Double Yikes!! Knows I'd be wanting to leave there for about anywhere, lol
Points Nation
I don't care for them either. Points nation.
Definitely NOT what you want to see in the sandbox, ugh HH
That is really scary. Whatever kind it is, it doesn't belong in the baby's sandbox!
YIKES!
Here to help from: Points Nation!
you are bravier then me! i would have ran inside.
Looks like a King Snake to me, they like to sun themselves on my patio.
EWwww~ I hate snakes. I hope is does not come back .
That's pretty darn scary. I don't know what I would have done.
yecky i can't stand snakes, what ever happen with this
All's well that ends well. It was probably harmless, and just as afraid of you all. My brothers used to capture, play with snakes and keep them as pets all the time as children. I just watched them -- wanted no dealings with the snakes!
Snake ever return? I saw a huge one last night! Tune in for pictures, probably tomorrow.
yeah he is big.. I have not seen any around our place lately.. I think its cause we dont have a bunch of trees right in our yard.. pomds and trees nearby but not to close.. My friend said she has been finding them in town at her house adn her moms!
