Today we decided to take a trip to the Waccatee Zoo and Animal Refuge here in Myrtle Beach, SC. It's about twenty minutes from us and I thought we'd better go now before school lets out next week and it will be crowded. This is a really nice place for animals who can no longer live on their own in the wild. They also have some goats, birds, ducks and other wildlife that can live fine in the wild, but for the most part the animals need human help to keep safe and well fed.
It was a beautiful day, at the zoo I'd say it was in the mid 80's. There's plenty of shade here so we weren't too hot.
We didn't spend a lot of time touring the grounds to see all the animals. My main interest was the water area where there are hundreds of birds, some turtles and fish. We are still in the nesting period here in Myrtle Beach and I was hoping I'd catch some nesting birds, some juveniles along with the adults. I wasn't disappointed.
In a series of Photo Essays and videos I'll be sharing my finds. I hope you enjoy seeing Mother Nature's splendor as much as I did.
I've posted the first video we took earlier today of one of many peacocks roaming around freely. This one was particularly handsome and quite the showoff. If you have seen it yet here is a link. I've seen a lot of peacocks in my day but this was the best. He is just gorgeous and quite the show bird!
The second video I took is of some animals that are in the area as you come through the store where you buy your admittance tickets. If you'd like to see more of the animals they have here at the zoo and animal refuge, I posted these article last year.
Waccatee Zoo - Migratory Birds
I put these links in so anyone coming to Myrtle Beach for a vacation can get an idea of what this zoo and refuge is like.
So on to today's visit Part 1.
A few of the animals we saw at the zoo today.
The Goats are always my favorite animals. I try to get the ones that smile for me;)

The reason I don't take a lot of photos at this zoo, the fencing. This guy insisted that I include his portrait.

Since he was so darn cute I managed to get one over the fence. Most of the time the fence is too high to do this.

Another great smile.

Sweet nursing baby.

This guy will need braces when he's a teen.

I couldn't resist this portrait of mother and child.

I was trying to get a picture of his little tiny horns and he moved. Actually I think he got head butted by a bigger goat.

Peacocks are everywhere.

Licking the bowl clean.

Beautiful Rooster

Funny Ostrich

Even a squirrel

Nice photos! When I get a piece of land in the country, I want to see if I am allergic to goats because I want some goats on my property. They are great at brush control, too.
Great photos. That third peacock one is exceptional. Are you using the new lens?
Thanks Marianne. No, not here. This is actually just the hood and the new setting. I'm waiting until you get here to try out the new lens. The zoom lense should only be used w/tripod for really far objects and the other three lens are probably the same ones you have been waiting to try out also. I also have a macro lens and fooled with it a littl but maybe I need to tweak some setting, nothing exceptional yet.
These are very nice photos. I want to go to your zoo.
You got some great photos. I always enjoy the zoo.
Love the little goats!
Amazing shots--thanks.
Wow, great Peacock photos! Actually, they are all beautiful photos. Fencing is a pain to photograph through, I ran into trouble with double fencing at the animal rehab center near me. Love the mother and child goat shot!
Thank you for posting your photo essay at Pretty Pictures.
You took some really nice photos!
These are great photos, the Ostrich looks too funny, lol
I love the Peacock photos. The goats are cute but they can be mean. I love visiting zoos and nature centers.

Great shots of the animals! I worked with goats my freshman year of college; they're neat creatures, and quite funny!

Great shots. Love the mother and baby goats. The peacocks are very colorful.
Beautiful Photo Essay Nana
Makes me want to go to the zoo
Those goats are adorable! I hate it when the zoo's have fences, it just ruins the photo opportunities. The peacocks are beautiful too!
You would think that after living in SC for 15 years I would have been to Myrtle Beach. I will make a point of visiting there later this Summer. I love Zoo's and you took some great shots!!
You'll have to let me know if you visit! Thanks for commenting.
The ostrich made me laugh out loud! Love all the goat photos! Susy R. and CyberGwen have turned me on to the charms of goats -- and you're picking up where they left off! Enjoyed this...
I love taking the kids to out local zoo. I can't wait for Lilly to be older..
Do you think the animals like to pose for the cameras? I love the one of the ostrich that looks like its blowing kisses
Thanks Debra. I think they like to be talked to. People think I'm crazy, but I talk to the animals when I'm trying to get photos. It seems to work for me.
You have posted so many good photo essays I want to feature them all, but that wouldn't be fair to others! LOL!
