My daughter and I was talking last night. She told me how she has to sit out for recess and how many more days she has. I am not sure what she did to get in trouble. But another little girl has to sit out to.
Having her just sit is what has gotten her in trouble to begin with. My gosh can you imagine a little girl who has trouble controling herself to sit being made to sit as a punishment..Wow, I think the teachers are asking her to screw up so they can punish her. Asking a child to sit from 7:25 am to 5pm except walking to and from the bus and cafeteria is asking to much. Even I can't do that much sitting everyday.
So, I wrote a note to the teacher. Since, my daughter has trouble sitting I explained about her situation. It was a lengthy note. More like a letter. I asked if they could have my daughter walk a square or something to get her energy out. As I think it would be more beneficial than her just sitting there. Not only for my daughter but hopefully it would help get some of my daughter energy out for her to be ble to sit a little longer and concentrate in class.
I recived and email back from her classroom teacher saying :
"I will talk with the other teacher that covers lunch duty with me to work out a way for Little K to burn off her energy without sitting out. Thank you very much for your suggestion.
Thanks,
Mrs. Teacher"
I am hoping my suggestion works and the teachers can come up with something that can beneifit not only my daughter but them as well. Do you think I made a good suggestion? Or do you think I was out of line for making such a suggestion?

Sometimes it amazes me at the things they do.
I couldn't believe it when my daughter said they made her sit. Espically knowing she has trouble sitting. That just floored me.
Sounds very similar to what the school did with my son. He wouldn't sit still and pay attention so they took a away recess. He needed to burn the energy off! UGH
I would have made the suggestion as well. At Gideon's school if te have to sit out it's only ONE recess out of the THREE they get daily.
Sitting out for all of them is too much!
I think it is to much as well. My daughter gets one recess an thats after lunch. Thats it.
they did the same thing to my son! I had to fight with the teachers and administrators to change this- sitting during recess is counter productive! that is where they are supposed to run off their energy!
sitting for 1 minute per year is acceptable - so 5 minutes for a kinder - and trust me that is an eternity to them!
I do understand the time per age. I do agree it is counter productive. That is why I sugestion an alternative way for my daughter to serve her punishment. When I was a kid, it was never sitting out. It was always something that required energy. It taught us kids real quick not to do what we did again.
I think it makes a lot of sense for her to be able to expend some of her energy, when I first heard they had her sitting still I thought it was crazy. I think you did the right thing, I hope they can figure out a better way to handle this.
I can't wait to hear my daughter to see what they have came up with for her to do today.
Thank you. I am hoping I did right thing. I understand she did wrong wrong and needs taught to not to do it again. I really don't think have her sit is the way to do it.
It seems to me making them help in the library or the cafeteria would be a much better punishment. But oh yeah their not aloud to make them do that anymore.
I don't see why they can't do that anymore. I can remember kids doing thatin school and liking it. As they got older they started helping at lunch time and actually got paid for it.
it was cruel and unusaul treatment plus they weren't getting paid. Theaching kids to work teaches resecpt and they do usually like it.
Helping out would be another great idea. But I still stand by them needing to be outside.
When Zachary would get in trouble and lose his recess they would have him walk the outside of the playground so that he wasn't just sitting inside. All kids, no matter what they did wrong, need to get outside as much as possible. And ADHD children especially need to be able to burn off their energy. I'm glad our school came up with this alternative to sitting inside.
I agree all kids need to go outside and run or play. Walking the playground is a good way to keep the kids active. Does walking the playground seem to work well at your school as to sitting out?
i hope this will help her
Thank you. So d I.
I think you made the right decision. Making children sit the entire day is not a good idea. Kids learn better when they're up and moving around, and I never agreed with making children sit out for recess
THANK YOU. I don't even make my children sit at home as a punishment. It never did work on me as a child. I do however find something for them to do that takes energy. An extra chore or something, like picking sticks out of the yard. One of the chores that needs done any way. It seems to help.
You know what I just remembered a mother I know of who has had the same kinds of problems with an austic son. She finally called the school board and complianed about the abuses on her disabled son. Meantioned getting a lawyer. She has so far had no other problems.
Your daughter has a right to exercise. Convicts have that right so should she for heavens sake.
I am glad that mother was able to accomplished what she needed to get done. I will keep this in mind.
Asking a small child to sit that long is asking for more misbehavior. It never worked for me, and I'm sure being Teachers they can come up with an alternative punishment.
I think the teachers can to. That is why I made the suggestion.
You did the right thing, they need to burn off the energy. And they should know that! Grrrr!
My son's psychologist recommended my son actually be allowed to walk around extra, not just at recess, when he was done with his work, which he could bring home anyways for us to go over togather. They didn't do that though. He could have gone outside or in the gym.
They cut back recess more and more and they have said studies show when kids get to move around they behave better and get better grades. They get stiff and sore just sitting there-even kids without add or adhd need to move around. They could add moving activities more into their teaching part of the classes. I can't sit all day even if I want to-like when I want to Gather. :)
I'm glad school is out here for the summer. I dread every school year. Shouldn't be that way.
My daughter will see a psychologist for the first time next month. So, I will mention that as part of a requirement. last year the teacher worked with her and allowed my daugher to get up and walk around to do her work. Even if it meant my daughter stood at the teachers desk to do it.
The teacher this year does allow her to help pick the chairs on the desk at end of day.
Yeah, really, what Vivian said. Even convicts get to exercise, they get to go out in the yard, they get gyms. Hmmm, something wrong with that picture.
Hmm, I will have to mention that depending on the solution if one is not came up with by the tecahers.
Always remember Minipin, she is Your daughter. Not the teachers', school's, or principal's. Certainly they have many factors to consider in a decision and can't always do what is needed for each child, but I do not think a mother is Ever wrong to make a suggestion that will help her child - especially when she cares enough to take the time to explain fully as you have done here. Also, you are not asking for her to miss the consequences of whatever the problem was, just to change it to something that will help her behave better afterward. Besides, having a child with her issues sit for punishment? Did these teachers even study these conditions?
Thank you. I know the school can't accomadate every student. But I feel with my daughters needs they need to do something. Otherwise in my opinion they are really denying her a chance to learn and get a fair education as the rest of the kids.
Your right, I am not asking them to not teach her conquences. I am asking them to modify what they are doing.Because what they are doing is not working but making matters worse. If it helps my daughter, it may help other children in the future. That is what I am striving for.
I like how you think of the future and all the children at her school with these issues - you sound like a very thoughtful mom and she is blessed to have you.
Thank you. I do try and think of other kids that may come the teachers way that are like my daughter. If it helps her, it will give the teacher something to possible use in the future.
I think that it is wonderful that you wrote to them with an alternative suggestion. This is much better than just telling them that what they are doing is not working, and more likely to get a favorable response. I hope they agree to not make her just sit anymore!
Thank you. I am trying to stay positive and get what is best for my daughter. I don't think going in ith a negative attitude would work. I figure a suggestion is just that. If they do it great. If not, I would have to take further steps. I can see the teacher is trying to work with me. I also realize teachers can't think of everything.
Sitting out for all of them is too much! She's a child and they need that time to run and let off some steam!
Having her help with something during that time would be way more beneficial to everyone involved, especially your daughter!
I defiantly think that having kids sit out is horrible on them, especially for those kids who have trouble sitting still.
You were right in making the suggestion. You did it in a nice non-confrontational way so they were more likely to listen. I love way people do things anymore. we have a child who can't sit for long, so lets make her sit more, ya like that works. You did right to speak up and it may change some attitudes.
Have you read that article here about somebody who gave thier child some coffee? Seems caffine helps ADHA. Maybe you should research it and see if it could help your daughter.
No I haven't read that one.
I think its worse to have children sit out, as we all need to get exercise every day. They are encouraging overweight people. I'm not happy with the school system as you can easily see.
That was a good suggestion and I hope they take you up on it. I know we had a kid who had to miss recess because of his behavior and they cleared it with me (I work in the library) for him to come to the library during his recess time. We had some puzzles and things for him to do to keep him occupied.
Yes, they did. They had her up walking
I think you did the right thing. The teacher seemed receptive to your ideas as well. It is good to work with the teachers instead of against them.
I asked my daughter what she hadto do today instead of sitting. She said she had to walk. So, they are making her walk to help ger her energy out. Which is a good thing.
Oh, that's great! I'm glad they did that. It should help her with her energy.
Glad they used your idea!
I am glad the teachers were willing to work with you on this issue. I am sure the punishment was one that applies to all students without taking into consideration the particular needs or issues a certain student has. Having an IEP would ensure that these kinds of punishments do not take place.
The school will not let get an IEP. I am trying to get a 504..of course they want more forms filled out by doctor. I was abled to get one filled out today. The other one I turned in as th doctor office was closed. I just happen to catch people doing paperwork. Lol. That should be done monday or tuesday.
I am trying as best I can.....I am hoping to get part of the leg work done for next year.
I think you did the right thing. ALL kids need exercise throughout the day.
