I can't decide which version I like better--I've always been a Tears For Fears fan, but I have to admit that was only since Songs From the Big Chair. "Shout", "Everbody Wants To Rule the World", and "Head Over Heels" are excellent. I don't remember "Mad World" too much, but it is definitely an awesome song.
The orginal song has a quicker tempo, and the chorus is a bit different. I can't say there's less feeling, but it is different.
Check out Roland Orzabal's funky dancing in the background.
Now Adam Lambert's version. He changed the tempo to a ballad and tweaked the melody. It's more heart-wrenching nthan TFF's. I like this one, too. I have to wonder what Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal think of it. They have to be enjoying the resurgance of interest in them, I would think.
The Gary Jules version....to me this sounds closer to Lambert's version...

Although newer arrangements are bringing people to the song, I still prefer the original and often pair it with Tears for Fear's Pale Shelter...but that's a personal fave from their works.
It sounds like Adam is trying his hand (voice) at the Gary Jules' version?
I was thinking that's where he got his version--not so much from TFF, too.
*high five* I'll be interested to see which version people prefer - thanks for opening the discussion.
I'm going to add the Gary Jules vid to the post. Thanks for pointing it out.
I like the original best but adams version comes an extremely close second
hmm I kind of like them all...but Adam Lamberts seems the most haunting...so I'll go with him
I think I might steal this for song of the day...it's lovely.
Original then Adam's.
These are all neat, when Adam did this on Idol it was amazing.
