I've visited the site once because my curiosity got the better of me. And, I've got to say/ask, "What's the big deal with Twitter?" I didn't like the format much, and there aren't any eye-catching graphics. I know Twitter is popular with celebrities and media types, and I read through several "tweets" (who came up with that term?) It did not compute/excite/register. People who use Twitter call themselves "Tweeters" (I call them "Twits"). I just don't get it, but I refuse to become a Twit, and will remain a faithful Gatherer...
Can somebody clue me in-what the heck am I missing here???

I wish I could help but I figure I have enough social networking sites as it is lol.
Same here. I dropped a bunch of them, cept for my main 2, Gather and Myspace. Myspace used to be the only one i'd get on, and i'd forget about the other ones weeks later, but when Gather came along, well, it pushed myspace out of the way for me. I still get on sometimes to check in with friends, but I stick to Gathering, and try and get on every day, and I'll stay on for hours!
I used to have four myself, but I dropped ning as I found all these sites too overwhelming, so now I just limit myself to myspace, facebook, and gather at the moment.
I've never looked at Twitter but have always been curious since it does seem many media types have advertised being on Twitter. I couldn't keep up with another social networking site, but you have aroused my curiosity.
Twitter sucks~nuff said ;)
Thanks for posting to GutterGirls~
I'll pass on Twitter. I don't think I'm missing anything at all.
Mari,
Twitter and Gather are two completely different animals.
Both do some things very well, and other things not so well. How (or if) you utilize each one depends upon your needs.
Twitter can be very useful, but if you're only drawn to Twitter out of curiosity then you likely won't get much out of it.
Kevin, I wasn't really "drawn" to Twitter, but I guess I had to see what the buzz was all about-curiosity satisfied!
Agreed! I think Gather & Twitter are just too different to really be compared. The intent behind each site is vastly different, & I think each serves its purpose, in its own way!
I signed up, someone asked me to- so I did, haven't been back. The only thing about "twitter" MAYBE, is I think SOME of the things I type or do-elsewhere, have a "link" to add to "twitter". So far I haven't. Also, I think from what I understand it's used for very quick little statements, what in today's world, I guess like "texting" IS the THING?
Yep, texting is a big thing, cept for me, who has no cell phone, so Gather is my thang :)
Thang, IS correct, sorry ::)
I am not a big fan of twitter either
twitter is a phenom, a flash in the pan.
i do tweet but i really gather.
I'm totally on with with this. I like to say, 'Twitter is for twits!' I even told our fearless leader here on Gather, Tom Gerace, when he wrote about being on Twitter and how people could follow him there, that I'd rather follow him right here at 'home' on Gather. He even had to admit, he'd rather Gather, too.
i have never twitter'ed or whatever lol never felt the need. im good with gather
I suppose that Twitter has its uses, but I haven't found any reason to use it. That may eventually change, but, at this point, I'll pass.
I'm also just a gather person. I signed up, but quickly lost interest. If it cant catch my eye in 30 mins, its not worth it for me. Gather caught my eye instantly, which is why I'm still here! :)
I have better things to do with my times...
like Gathering
I "Tweet" my Gather stuff... it lets friends who are not online at the moment know when I've posted something.
I think Twiter is boring too
Why are we bashing twitter, it's really good. It's just different then gather. I gave up facebook for gather.
No bashing here, Lisa, I and my fellow Gatherers are just expressing opinions :)
I have no clue. I *just* started Facebooking. May checkout Twitter eventually.
I think it's pointless to compare Gather & Twitter or to try to say one is better than the other. They're just totally different & have differnet purposes! I have a Twitter account but I don't use it all the time. Maybe once or twice a week I think of it. Now I do imagine that when I get my iPhone (whenever they hurry up & release the new ones!!) I'll put a Twitter app. on there & will probably use it a lot more because I will use it on the go. That's my favorite use of Twitter that I have seen thus far. I do use Facebook but would rather not do FB updates for every stupid little thing-- which I think Twitter is more fun for. "Tweeting on the go," I guess. I have also found that in my area a lot of local business utilize Twitter to send out messages about special sales & promotions, which is kind of neat!
I don't know what you're missing because I have missed it entirely! LOL! Perhaps it is for the best that I don't become a "twit."
I dont do Twitter either. I dont see the point in it. I did have a MySpace page-til I forgot the password..lol...so then I signed up for Facebook and I dont really care for it. I think I have signed in twice in 4 months....boring, in my opinion.....plus I just dont have time for all that.
Me too!
You just told me more about the service than I knew before....I have no clue what it does, I thought it was just a new tech toy for those with more money than they knew what to do with.
Krystal et al., that's what I mean. I can spend hours Gathering-the pics & articles (& drama). Just sitting there reading comment after comment-BORING!
I just joined, and haven't really figured out how to use it yet either. I never really got into MySpace or Facebook though either...
I'm much the same way. Twitter is too confined for what I have to say. I write for the fun of it. I like to write long sentences and inform the people that actually read ny stuff. Twitter just doesn't do it for me.
I totally agree!
It is basically for people that have internet on their cell phones and too much time on their hands.
i gave up on facebook, never participated in face book, twitter is way too much for moi!
I stay connected with Facebook because my high school reunion is in Sept.-a lot of my classmates are there.
You aren't missing a thing Mari.
I've never Twittered. I like Facebook, so I'm sticking with that.
I have not even looked at it - I do keep hearing about it everywhere though.
I like Gather better than Facebook and Twitter.
