I have a few questions for you gatherites about returning comments. Do you return the comments that you receive on your work? Do you only comment on others who do? How do you feel about those who don't return comments?
I'm considering not directly returning comments. I'm having trouble keeping up, and I thought it might be better just to try and keep up with my feeds and forget returning comments. What do you do?

I try to return comments to everyone who comments on my things and then in between I wil comment on things that others have posted.
I second this emotion!
No rhyme or reason to my commenting. Just when the urge hits me.
Since I don't elect to get email notifications I return comments to those I am connected to. If I see someone never comments on my stuff, I usually skip theirs.
I try to keep up with comment on the feeds. When time permits, I'll return comments on my stuff.
I'm not completely sure what you mean by "return comments." If someone comments on my article, I certainly read it. I might reply right there in the comment section on my own post, if a reply is appropriate. Once in a while I'll go over to the initial commenter's page and read an article of hers/his and make a comment. Most often, I just go forward.
I have noticed that some people reply on a post of mine if I make a comment on theirs. I find that polite and thoughtful, but I also wonder how in the world they have enough time to *be* that thoughtful. Alas, I'm too busy and need to divvy up my time spent on various social networking sites.
Thanks. I'm busy as well, and I think I need a new strategy.
I'm not commenting on every comment. Ha ha - that sounds silly. Let me start again. I'm not replying to every comment - random ones here and there.
I do what I can! LOL I get email notifications and put the ones for comments in a seperate folder to get to when I can. I spend most of the day looking at stuff from my connections (TONS OF VIEWS but only a few I actually comment on) then at night when relaxing sometimes if there are people that have commented to me that I haven't commented to in a while I will go back and comment to them otherwise i view my comments then delete the email. Good luck to you - keep it fun though - don't make it into another job you know?
You're right. This should be fun. It will be from now on :)
I don't have time to reciprocate every comment that I get, and I think that's what you mean here. I simply view my friend feed and comment on everything that I can.
Yep I totally agree......otherwise a person could be on Gather 8, 10, 12 hours a day....LOL!!!!! Just do what one can and not worry about it.
I try to return comments less I have already hit the entire page of the owner.. Or I tend to let them pile up and then return them. Its easier that way for me... I care less if the comments are returned to me I just like having comment and people to comments on :) either way really works long as you at least ping a thank you.
I just cannot keep up with everything so I do what I can, when I can.............there are times when I will post an article thanking everyone who's taken the time to comment, as I don't have hours and hours on the computer.
I return some but It's impossible to keep up with everyone.
I used to try to go back and give comments to everyone how had given them to me, but I don't really have the time anymore. I still try, especially if it is someone I don't recognize leaving me a comment, to go visit their page and see if they have anything of interest to me for me to leave a comment on. Otherwise I try to keep up with one of my groups and then try to keep up with my feeds when I am on. I have trouble doing that now that I am not able to be online as much, or spend as much time on Gather.
I comment back when time permits, but I really enjoy finding a comment from a new person, who I wll go read. have found many cool articles, people that way. I don't feel someone owes me if I comment on something of theirs.
It depends on the comment. A "good job" comment I probably wont return, but one that is longer and obviously had some thought put into it, I try to return.
It depends. I do kinda what Winona just said.
LOL well I try to be fair! Hard to do by the way.
I most of the time will ping them and thank them for their comments. When I am viewing things I will normally comment on anything that doesn't have 10 comments or more. Since the views count and not the comment.
If someone had a bunch of pictures I will usually view and rate all of them and then ping them to let them know I enjoyed the pictures.
Probably more than you wanted to know! LOL
I mostly just comment on the stuff that is in my feeds. On slow days I will pick a person & go & comment on a bunch of their stuff....just so I'm not bored.
Those who comment me, I will check out their content. IF I can find something interesting I comment If they post internet content I will not return comments on that type of content but if they post original work I will. I try to return all comments but if their content is boring I just view and not comment Ive got to be able to say something about what Im viewing I will not say nice shot etc unless I really think it is. Those who don't even bother to let me know they have an interest in my stuff like an occasional comment I only visit them if they post something of interest I find in the feeds. But with this last upgrade its made it rough even doing that.
I am trying..but between cats sitting on my hands and slow crashing puters...I am trying!!
I don't agree with the 'comment me, comment you' philosophy.
If someone is compelled to comment on my content simply because I commented on theirs, then I would rather not have the comment at all. I prefer to receive comments from members that are genuinely interested in what I have published/shared, not out of some perceived obligation.
Good point...
I really just comment on feeds, not based on if someone comments on my stuff or not.
I try and return every comment, and then comment on others articles.
I comment only on what interest me
I agree with the first two ideas on this article....It's hard to answer the same person's articles over and over with no return that you feel like they really don't care that much to keep talking with you, esp when you see them commenting on other's articles!
I first try to read posts and view photos of my connections that read and comment my posts and photos. Then time permitting I go check out things that non-connections who have commented on me have posted. And I of course every once in a while go surfing around Gather for strangers and strange stuff to look at.
One thing I do that my connections may not know, I look at almost all of my connections photos but only comment on a few of them so I don't get harrassed by the Director of Member Services for "littering" by leaving a generic comment on the thirteenth pretty flower or cute kid pic in a row that I looked at.
That said, I believe in quid pro quo - you are much more likely to get a pageview and comment from me if you leave comments on my articles. And I don't even care if you leave me generic comments, just let me know you were there!
I try to comment on people's things if they have commented on mine. Sometimes, though, I get so behind that I just do a lot of viewing, especially if the comment is something like: "Thank you for posting to the ____ group. "
