Now that you whetted my interest... I find it's an industry only event.
I'm an avid reader, and book exchanger, but neither qualifies me for being "in" the industry.

BookExpo America 2009 in NYC was great! Heavier turnout than expected, despite the economic downturn. Lots of people there. Although it is an "industry" event, I know some people who attended as outsiders -- so that is an option if you're considering it for next year.
I'll issue a full report in a future post. In a nutshell, the Flightless Goose signing was a success, long line the entire time, even after we ran out of books!
