As many of you know I probably go overboard when it comes to my kids' birthdays. We don't have big parties with friends invited, but we do have a big family day of fun. Balloons, party horns, party hats, streamers - the works.
Well, this year for Haley's birthday (May 9th) we could not find party hats anywhere for some reason. Haley was very disappointed the day before her birthday, because we had always had party hats in the past, so what did I do? I made my own of course!
I had a ton of bright cardstock paper on hand. I cut out the hats (they look sorta "popish" I know) and stapled long strips of the cardstock I had cut out onto the bottom sides to make a band to go around your head. I then cut out different shapes using the scrap paper and glued them over the staples so they couldn't be seen. The next morning all we had to do was staple the band wherever it seemed to fit each of our heads and voila! Party hats!
Not only were they really cool and cute (I thought) but it was a lot of fun to make, and the kids loved them. Forget buying them from now on! I'm going to make them myself every year now. Next year maybe I'll even get the kids involved in making them.

What a fun acticity! The hats are so bold and colorful!
Thanks, Bridget. I loved how colorful they were.
Crap! The picture of me is NOT the one I want to be the main picture! I'm going to have to edit that somehow! LOL
Oh my...
Are you laughing at my pope hats?! Hehe.
Laugh at your popish hats? Never!
Yeah right! ; ) That's it! Four Hail Marys....................or something. I forget how all that Catholic stuff works (not being Catholic and all). Did you ever watch that movie "Stigmata"? It was freakin' good. (Sorry, my mind works oddly. It's thinking 'pope' which then leads to 'Hail Mary' which then leads to 'Catholic' which then leads 'Stigmata'. That seems normal, right? LOL)
It was decent, but I didn't care for the gal in the title role. Can't remember her name now...
Was it that chic who's married to Nicholas Cage? I can't remember her name either and looking it up on the net or walking over to look at the dvd case would take too much effort. Hehe.
COuld be. I always want to call her a de Mornay, but I don't think it's that.
There. I just got up off my lazy bum and looked. It was Patricia Arquette. She's married to that Cage dude, isn't she? I can't keep all those people straight.
Love that the whole family gets into it!
I'm hoping that as they get older they'll realize that mommy looks like an arse in a party hat, and I'll be able to get out of it! LOL
Not only cool hats but there's a beautiful lady lower right!
Thanks, John, but I think you are insane! LOL
You are handy in a pinch. I think I would like them better than store bought ones.
I'm not even going to bother with the store bought ones anymore, JoAnne. These ones were much more fun.
That's a super idea and also your photo essay was very cute!!!
Thanks, Deb.
This is a really cute photo essay. How creative and what a great idea to make your own hats. Your kids are so cute too - HAPPY LATE BDAY to Haley
Thanks, Kimber.
That is a great party idea! They look wonderful~
Thanks, Priscilla!
They are super cute Victoria. I think it's more fun to decorate your own hat anyway.
Thanks, Jax, and I agree!
LOL I think they are cute.
Thanks, Dad. Or is this Mom posing as Dad? Hehe.
Ah..........Happy Hats
Thanks for viewing and commenting, Scott.
They turned out great. We celebrated and still do, the same way--big deal, cheap and with our family.
I mean "inexpensively" compared to the lavish parties people have.
I enjoy having small family parties - just my husband, myself, and our kids. I was just thinking this year for Haley's birthday party that she may not want to do things that way after this. She may want to invite her friends. That thought sort of saddened me.
I still crack up when I look at Ron in that hat. Nice photos and project.
Ron looks very popish, huh. LOL
Creative. Ver ycute.
I mean very cute.
You're stupid.
I wonder if people realize that we're sisters or they read comments like that (you're stupid) and think "Oh my goodness! How rude!" LOL
Awesome hats Victoria, and homemade makes them even cooler.
Thanks, j r!
The Pope hats turned out great! (Sorry- as SOON as I saw it, that's exactly what I thought!). They would be a fun craft at party time, and could be made to match any theme. Fantastic job!
Definitely pope hats! That's what we immediately thought too. I asked my husband if I ought to cut them differently but he liked the popish look. He's insane too, of course. LOL
Love the colors! They are so cute!
Thanks, Juley!
For sisters, I find you guys rather polite. Not like how my evil baby sister Robin treats me!
My sister smells like feces, Shannon. If you ever meet her in person, don't breathe through your nose. In fact, you won't want to breathe throught your mouth either. Hehe. I hope she reads this. Ba ha ha!
Note: When I go visit Vic, wear my swine flu mask in case her sister comes too.
Ha ha. That's freakin' funny!
You should come visit sometime!
Okay, folks, looks like I'm caught up on this post with this whole "commenting back" thing that so many people are so obsessed with on here.
These are just adorable and way cuter than what you would buy at the store. How about polka dots next year?
Great idea, Christine! I'm definitely going to expand on the whole idea in the future. This was pretty much a last minute idea I did in the hours before I collapsed into bed on the night before her birthday. I just hated to see her be disappointed. Suddenly it just hit me that I could make something that would work, and I had just bought new cardstock. Voila! You get the above. : )
Your family is just too much fun girl.
I am going to try to make party hats for the next birthday too. They are so much fun.
love the hats what a great idea
This looks fun and a creative way to jazz up your celebration!
