Each year my family goes to Andersonville National Cemetery to place flags at the graves of fallen Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen. Members of our military from the Civil War until today are buried there. Often we see graves just days old when we arrive.
The flag placement has become a tradition for our family. A tradition we plan to continue for as long as we live in Georgia.
This year it rained... for the first time in my memory... on the day we placed flags. It was heartwarming to see that didn't stop people from coming to help honor these men and women. Nearly 600 people showed up to place flags and pay their respects.
Because of the rain, I didn't take my camera out of the car. But the local newspaper, Americus Times-Recorder, took this picture of my youngest son, Jae, saluting a fallen soldier

Our friends the Palmers were there also. This is the third year they have gone with us. Samuel is a friend of Jae's and we were surprised to find out that Sam's family actually has a relative buried there....
Daniel P. Palmer of Tennessee... a Private captured 3/24/1864. Daniel died while imprisoned at Camp Sumter (Andersonville). He was only 19.

What a wonderful family traditon and such a terrific thing to do for our fallen veterans. That is a very touching photo of your son.
We use to do the same here in our area when my son was in boy scouts. Now we usually go to Washington D.C. for the parade and ceremonious ant the memorials. Unfortunately it is supposed to rain and thunderstorm o we may have to have our day of remembrance here at home today.
that is a great tradition
Good for you and your family. It is pouring here today (Memorial Day).

What a great family tradition!
Andersonville has gotten more and more attention over the years. The addition of the National POW Museum added even more traffic. Good to see you doing this and it's even better than hundreds of others join you in doing so.
