Having been dragged through the headlines over the past couple days, Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, is hoping to get off the front page as regards the College Democrats flap. You may recall that the leaders of the college, including Jerry Falwell JR., had taken the step of refusing college sponsorship to a chapter of the College Democrats at the socially conservative evangelical institution. The reason stated was simple: Democrats accept abortion, and Liberty University does not, so you can't be a Dem here.
The latest news has Falwell & Co making a counter offer. Let's dicker, they say: how about if you students affiliate yourselves with "Democrats for Life in America", that national group that specifically opposes abortion, euthanasia, and the death penalty, but is otherwise Dem. The idea apparently came from Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate to fill Tim Kaine's Governor seat in the fall 2009 election. Falwell liked the idea, because the position on abortion taken by Democrats for Life is in line with the Liberty position. Let's pressure the students into limiting their own freedom, and that way there's no lawsuit because we limited their choices for them!
In theory, it's a win win, right? Let the students be Dems, as long as they expressly disavow the position on abortion taken by the Democratic Party. The flap leaves the front page, everybody gets on with their life. The odd thing about it is, these people call themselves Liberty University, but where's the "liberty"? Just asking.

No, its not a win/win, is it? Its a republicants and the christian taliban bully their way into winning and then try to portray it as being "fair and balanced". And we know Faux News, along with many of the corporate media will play it that way.
The motto for the school should be something like, "You can have liberty and free thinking; as long as you only think like we do."
I'm sorry, why are these free-thinking Democrats studying at this school? It's in Lynchburg... need I say more
(Tongue in cheek - I'm not THAT bigotted to dis an entre town for its name)
We need to remove all the religious aspects, including abortion, from the GOP
Hear hear!
The Red states want to bring back slavery, for women, for unhappy marriages and everything! Threaten damnation to keep every one in line! Only the fools fall for it!
The liberty is in choosing a different university like Yale, Harvard, or Princenton that chose in times past to hire liberal secular professors into their universities that once stood on Biblical principles.
Why would anyone who supports the killing of babies want to attend Liberty Univeristy? The only reason I can think of would be to challenge the Univerisity policies and standards in a court of law. With today's liberal activist judges it takes little effort to challenge religious freedom.
1) I hope Liberty University is not receiving any government dollars. Refusal to allow any legal party should also be a grounds for losing tax exempt status.
2) There are many evangelicals who do not subscribe to the narrow social principles in the way they are held by LU.
I guess there's no liberty at Liberty University. Sounds like they want to control minds and not encourage them to think for themselves.
