I want to start out by saying I am so very proud of my husband. Eric started today on his G.E.D. he is planning on after that going on to college to be a mechanic. He found out today in class they will pay for 48 hours of the college through a program for graduates of the G.E.D. program. He then can get financial aid to pay for the rest. I am so proud of him for wanting to not only do better for himself but as well for our family.
Now for the little rant, many know we are on TANF and foodstamps. This is not something I am embarrassed of anymore. We have tried hard to get off it and I know we will eventually be off of it. I am still waiting on my results from my hearing on disability. I can't believe how long this takes to get, I have been fighting for 3 years. Before we got on TANF after Eric lost his job he supported our family on hauling junk. When junk prices dropped drastically he was as well unable to support our family on it.
Do I want any of you to feel sorry for us? NO WAY!!! We are making ends meet and supporting our family. Some say no they are supporting our family. Let me give you a little newsflash if you are one of those people. We make on TANF $399 a month. We pay on rent alone $325. We drive a van that cost us $50, yep you got that right $50 we got lucky and it was a miracle from god I believe. Eric will still haul junk here and there, I order any sample I can find, I will do surveys, or anything else I can do to make a little money.
Now do you think we get this $399 for free? Again NO WAY and we don't want it for free. Eric's requirements are to work 30 hours a week, put in 5 job applications. Now that he started school they take off those 6 hours on working. Now how many of you would work for a little over $1 an hour? If you calculate this that is what he works for.
Now what pisses me off is this. First is we get judged for being on TANF, we are told that we should give some things up such as our internet. If I give up the internet the little bit of money I make offline and our samples are then gone. As well as I can not help the rest of the board with the foundation.
Then lets get to the adoption still is not finalized on James. This means Eric is his legal guardian, he has to take him to doctor visits, WIC, etc. You say he can sign a doctors note for me to take him? News flash again this is not so. So if he has to take off certain days from work, he goes in on Saturdays to make them up, then someone gets upset because he isn't there on a certain day. He gets told well if he worked at another job he wouldn't be able to take off to take James to doctor visits. Well another news flash he was able to do that at his other jobs. He worked second shift on his last job and would take James in the mornings to visits. If he had to take off they understood, for they was explained to in the beginning this situation.
Now are there some people out there just taking a ride off the state? Sure there is, but its not so easy to do anymore. Is Eric a low life? Is he lazy? Should he work his butt off for a little over a $1.00 for someone not understand what else his life is like? Is he still looking for work? Yes he is. Will he take the first thing that comes? Heck yes he will if you look at $1.00 an hour compared to even min. wage.
My attorney has told me my disability should be real soon to a decision. She has now contacted our governor to help out. The reason she has done so I have been fighting this for 3 years, I had a hearing in Jan. for them to tell me they want another doctors opinion on what came first the heart problems or the PTSD, depression, etc. Now I ask who cares what came first and why does it matter? When I get this we will no longer have to live as some say off your money. I want to say one more thing this low life, myself, worked two jobs before I became disabled. I was an EMT and CNA, and for anyone that has never worked them two very hard jobs that I would do anything to be doing now.
So the next time someone judges a person on state help, think about why they are on it. Any one of you could be on it at any time, don't think you can't. Your job could be done tomorrow and when your unemployment runs out, then what? Would you be to embarrassed to go get help to support your family? Would you work for a little over $1.00 to support your family?
What if you was one of those employers who has agreed to allow someone to work for you for free. How will you feel about this? Would you understand why they get aggravated to work so hard and yet not be paid like so many that isn't even working as hard as you? Think about it McDonald's is hiring teenagers to do an easier job then my husband and get paid more then my husband. I am glad those teens are working, however should they get the jobs before the parents trying to support the families?
One more thing before I end that has been a judgmental comment. James is better taken care of then some kids who have money. He has everything he needs, maybe not everything he wants, but everything he needs. Then again when he gets older what is it he will say he had? He will say he had more love then he could imagine.
