I've had many people look up to me
nearly holding me in a sort of reverence
as if to keep me on a pedestal they created
with me having no input in its existence.
yet as life affected me negatively
I am expected to remain on their prop
without the least concern for me
they expect perfection without stop.
Imagine now, they pout
knowing I failed their stance
many pass me by now
without even a single glance.
They are devastated I failed
didn't live up to their want of me
at the same time they missed the boat
looking through my eyes to see.
Now when things are looking up
here they come running again
but I do not give a hair of a damn
I'm breaking their worship chain.

for many things in life
not for what you had
but how you handled strife
You didn't forget others
even at the top of your game
though most people do
more than I could name
so I hope you will forgive me
feeling as I do
that you are somebody
people should look up too
Keep your head up high
You deserve every one
don't let your detractors
put you under the gun
Know you have friends
who know the real you
and care and respect you
for all you are and do!
Blessings and best wishes - S.
Excellent poetic venting~let the ones who abandoned in times not so bright stay gone~the ones who stayed, pull them closer, and closer still =)
Out of the prison of your body you found the essence of communion with those who you recognize as brothers...or sisters.
I recognize a connection sometime with those who have lived centuries ago from the words they have written and still live on.
The connection is endless, you know it when you experience it.
I am sorry you have had that experience, but there are people who are not just fair weather friends. I have a long term illness that has disabled me, yet I have many friends that I can count on for love and support. It sounds like you know too many of the wrong people. I have met friends that have stuck by me as well! Don't let the shallow people get you down, focus on the rest. I would rather have 1 true friend than dozens of fair weather types.
This is another great poem
That's a great poem. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Spencer, this really resonates. (except for the last stanza, but I have been told I suffer from over niceness) It is really hard when people expect you to live as they idolize you. Then if you fail to stand up to that...
HERE,HERE, Spencer, break that chain, nicely done.
lost for words...amen!

Eloquent does not describe your poem. It is magical in its simplicity and straight to the point.
I do not count everyone I associate with as a friend. Most of them are acquaintences. And it's funny how those that are truly friends, do not need to be on my doorstep at all times. (Age may be a factor). In any case, the friends I do have are from "forever", and then there is a sprinkling of fairly new ones. But there is a special feel when you have a true friend and instinctively know who they are.
With those friends, we need not try to fit their expectations. They love us for who we are.
Do share this in Artistic Minds® ~ you have an AUDIENCE awaiting you in there.
